or savage 7mm-08, probably a little less kick, but still a good deer gun.

Another option is a 243win. I have takenfive mule deer and an antelope with a Remington model 700BDL in 243win. Using Remington 100gr. Core-Lokt factor ammo. The last mule deer was a 5x5 and harvested at 250yds. This cartiridge has light recoil and is good for deer and varmints. My son will be using it this year for deer. While I will be using the new 270wsm. As far as Brand name of gun is to handle all of them to see what fits you. Then after you get whatever rifle you get,go out and shoot to get familar with the rifle.

I would try to get a used Browning rifle. I would not recommend a Remington, or at least not thesemi-autos.My first rifle was a Remington 243 and never bought another one. Have two Browning BAR 308s now, one of which is 30+ yrs old and still shoots sweet.

Nothing wrong at all with savages. They are more inexpensive rifles, but very accurate and sturdy. You could also consider Stevens in .270 as well. Stevens is the real inexpensive rifle that Savage produces, and you could likely get a brand new one for $250-300.

I just sold my savage 7mm-08 with a burris scope for $350.00 and it had only been shot about 8 times to sight the scope in.
