Hollywood? I'm sure this movie wasn't produced with the 'hunters' in mind. Of course we could pick apart the most minute details! He could have been 'bump' firing an AR-15 too (although I don't think AR's were yet around during the time this movie was supposedly set).

It has been a LONG time since I saw the movie but I thought it was a fallow deer. Probably bought from a local deer farm. It was not a PA whitetail!

RE: What kind of deer was in "The Deer Hunter" (Robert DeNiro)
Well guys, I saw this thread and decided to look into it. There are actually many game preserves which have loads of red stag. There is actually one in eastern Penn. which is almost 3000 acres, which is where the movie was shot at. But the deer u see are not wild they were like pets, you know the ones people can feed and walk right up to and pet. They used food and other treats and toys do get them to be in the right places. Oh and the deer were originally on that preserve they were in fact the owners "pets" they kept in different closed up spots.

ORIGINAL: younggun308 Why the heck would they go expensive and get exotic deer instead of using some farm-raised Whitetail? That would at least allow them to be correct,lol.... |
