No doubt as hard as it may appear to the young fellow you did the right thing. Teaching him to respect anothers wishes by not allowing him to break the law is more of what's needed now a days. Being respectfull of others will help the young fellow presurve his hunting rights in the future.

Think about it this way. If you did let him shoot, what would you really have taught him.

Maybe taught him that it is more important to tresspass just so he could get a deer.

Maybe taught him that it is OK to ignore ethics.

Eventually he will be hunting on his own one day. If he was taught at a young age to be unethical, imagine what he would do later on.

He could possibly consider taking unsafe shots at game, thinking that bagging a deer is most important.

Right is right and wrong is wrong.

Instead of calling the decision "moral" put the word "values" on it. You didn't allow anyone to throw their values out - that is why they are VALUABLE! (They have a worth to you and hopefully others!)

What if the young one wanted a little booze or smoke a little dope. You would mak the right decision there, right.

Keep with it and I recommend that you talk to him atleast several more times about right and wrong.

Ya know sometimes examples speak better than words too. How would he feel if something he really valued up and disappeared? How would he feel if someone wronged him?

Man, what can I say? You are obviously in a great position of influence on him. Do everything you can with it and don't let him (or yourself!) down.

He's kinda young and green but only you can decide how much to come down on him.

"Boy! You keep thinking like that and you'll have to find another guy to hunt with. We just ain't gonna have it!"

Then throw abig old hug on him to let him know you love him more than ANY deer!

Your best bet would be not to shoot the deer. For one its illegal, and secondly, you want to teach the new hunter the rights and wrongs about hunting. If he was to shoot it, he would be getting a false sense of morals. The seasons are long enough and theres enough time for him to get that first deer, buck or doe.
