Hunting Pet Peeves

what's everyones hunt'n pet peeves?

one of mine is hunters who spend money on camo when they hunt in a condo/box style stand. i mean you are completely secluded behind wood or plastic that is not transparent so the game can not see you no matter what you are wearing. it cracks me up to watch hunt'n shows when they do this. they never stalk or shoot deer when walking to or from the stand but they are always camo'd out inside a non transparent box. if i hunted out of one of these stands, i wouldn't waste money on camo.

-People "stealing" your spot on public land.
-Deer have antlers, not horns.
-People who don't scout and wonder why they aren't seeing any game.
-Road hunters.
-People who say that "meat hunt" but let doe after doe walk by just to shoot a 2yr old 4pt.

man. I will be here all night.[:@]

The guy in the video that shoots a deer, the deer is laying on the ground dead within view, yet they sit in the blind for 45 minutes and whisper discussing the need to wait before you go to the deer.

Just thought I would steal (borrow) an idea from Letterman. Top 10 Deer Hunting Pet Peeves:
10. Guys that are upland game hunting during ML season and don't wear blaze orange.
9. The guy who wants to go hunting with you so bad then cancels the night before because the wife has something for him to do.
8. Big game hunters who shoot a Bambi, then pose for pictures.
7. Hunters that don't appreciate just being out hunting even if they don't harvest a deer.
6. Setting up well before sun up and then having a goofball walk in on you and set up 50 yards in front of you an hour after sun up. (hey buddy my blaze orange isn't a clue)
5. Hunting bush all morning in -30 weather and coming back to the truck for lunch to find 5 or 6 sets of fresh track 10 yards from the truck.
4. Swirling wind.
3. Finding a headless carcas left by a trophy hunter.
2. POACHERS!!!!
1. All those that knock and call down hunting (peta members at the top of the list), and have no idea about the social, economical, and environmental benefits that hunting provides for a community.

Re: #6 I had 7 hunters walk within 50 yards of my spot on public land on opening day of shotgun season, 3 of which got within 20 yards and suddenly realized the 6ft blob of bright orange in the brown woods.

My biggest pet peeves would be the following:
1. Hunters who go out to their stand before first light and walk back through talking to their buddy past other hunters loud as hell a half hour after sunlight.
2. Hunters who feel the need to wrap a buck's boy parts around a tree branch after they field dress it.
3. Hunters who either can't shoot or who don't sight in their guns. Nothing more annoying than hearing 4-5 shots in a row rattle off from the same area followed by a barrage of 4-5 more a half hour later.
4. Hunters who try to call in bucks but have no idea what a buck call sounds like. 2 years in a row I've hunted within earshot of a guy who calls bucks and sounds like a wounded cow.
5. Guys who spend hundreds on scent cover-up and then smoke or chew in the stand. Not really a pet peeve, just kind of funny. If I can smell it, I know the deer can.
6. Hunters who get upset when a kid (of appropriate age, maturity and safety training) is out hunting. They're the future of the sport and every one of us had ot learn how to hunt at one point in time too!

I'm sure I embody a lot of people's pet peeve's including dropping a 13pt buck on opening morning on public land I'd scouted once before.

RE: Hunting Pet Peeves

Mine is people who try and tell other people how to hunt, or that their preferred method of hunting is wrong/unethical, even though it maybe legal. Hunting is largely individual preference. Show me a dead deer...and to me....its just that...a dead deer. I don't care if you snuck up and stabbed it while it slept or if you hit it with a truck while drunk and spotlighting....its a dead deer to me. What matters is how you did it....and only you will ever know that.

Other big time pet peeve is tresspassing, or running deer dogs during spring turkey season, early archery, or ML seasons.

Oh yeah...and people who encroach waterfowl blinds (which is illegal in eastern VA). And then try and call ducks off you, or shoot at the birds you have been working when they swing down wind of you. Common courtesy people.....

I'm with SwampCollie. I cant stand when people tell you how to hunt or that your methods are wrong or unethical.

Others include the following:

-People who shoot deer at 350-400 yards and say they "hunted" the deer.
-People who underestimate a deers nose. I know people who say i waste my money on Scent Killer and stuff when they say deer dont care.
-People who critisize someone for shooting a certain size deer. Or shooting a doe.
-Poachers
-PETA or anything like it.
-People who dont take time to practice or sight in and then wound a deer or require 5 shots to take it down because they cant hit it right.

But...to them...that is hunting.

See what I'm gettin' at....its easy to do.

If someone wants to shoot a deer at 400 yards....heck I don't care. Do whatever you want. Just be safe about it, and hopefully you will have practiced at that range and be proficient with your firearm. Most of the guys who are shooting in these long range hunting things practice year round, and have thousands of dollars in their rigs. Which is just fine. Good for them. Long as they are having fun and being safe...do what you want. I feel the same way about crossbows. I don't care. You want to shoot a deer with a crossbow...good for you... get to it. I like to hunt my way.... so good for me. :D

RE: Hunting Pet Peeves

I have tried shooting at those distances, it's not as easy you might think. And in some places that might be the closest shot you get at a deer. And it will take a whole day of hiking and climbing (if not more) to get it.

My biggest pet peeves about hunting are probably these:

1.) People that are overly PC about hunting. It's hunting, we kill things for sport. If you have a problem getting over that concept you might want to think about getting a new hobby. Maybe wild life photography or something.

2.) Slob hunters. By this I mean guys that don't even make an effort to practice with their equipment be it gun or bow. They don't bother finding a load their gun likes or even checking to see how it shoots before the season starts. They just pull it out of the case that has been hiding in a closet all year and head out to the woods. Then throw a fit because they miss or wound an animal.

3.) And my third pet peeve is bow hunters that think all bow hunters are better than any gun hunter simply because they use a bow. What a load of crap! I see more lazy slob hunters using bows than I do with guns most of the time. At least with a gun you can get away with a little less practice. I have shot with too many people that can't hit a 2 foot by 2 foot target at 20 yards in a back yard, let alone put one in the vitals of a deer with a broad head out of a tree stand.

I see so many people that have no clue or education of deer anatomy or proper shot placement it makes me crazy. This would be with gun or bow as well.

4.) And lastly I'm not overly fond of people that trespass, sit in your stand, swipe your stuff or ride their 4 wheelers around messing up my hunt. I'm not overly fond of ATV's in general during hunting season. I understand in some places you need them, but not where I live. It just makes you lazy in my opinion.

Too many to list, but I will write a few.

-People who say they "meat hunt" but let doe after doe walk by just to shoot a 2yr old 4pt.

-Guys that empty their gun at a running deer.

-Hunters sighting their guns in the day before season.

-Hearing shots before or after legal light.

-Killing just to kill.

-Dudes blaming coyotes for every dead animal they find.

-Hunters hating coyotes for doing the same thing hunters themselves are doing (hunting).

-Hunters who have their wife, child or someone else tag there kill so that they can keep on hunting. (where it's not legal). I thinkIdislike this the most, In fact,I hate this with a passion.

RE: Hunting Pet Peeves

1. Hunters who shoot a deer and call it a PIG. Its a deer not a PIG.
2. Hunters who shoot up the woods.
3. Like others have said someone walking or standing 50 yards away from my stand.
4. Hunters who take yearlings or small inmature bucks.
5. Poachers or party hunters or hunters who have their wife or child tag there kill.
6. Quad runners where the driver drives like an idiot.
This list could go on for awhile... I'll end it here...

RE: Hunting Pet Peeves

my pet peeves:
1. hunters who sit your stand without permission (on private property) and smoke in it AND leave a bottle of piss in your stand.
2. the same hunter who tells you that he didnt shoot any deer and there are 7 30-06 shells in your stand, and all of they sudden, 5 regular does and 2 fawns disappear.
3. the same hunter who thinks he has the right to hunt your stand because he put out 1 BAG OF CORN, and you've put out over $300 dollars worth of corn and 3 days of time working on your food plot combined with the money for the food plot.
4. the same hunter who shoots all of the deer which you let walk.
5. the same hunter who drives up on your stand while you are hunting.
6. the same hunter who POINTS A GUN AT YOUR FRIEND BECAUSE YOU LET HIM HUNT THERE AND TELLS HIM THAT HE HAS NO RIGHT ON THE PROPERTY. my grandfather and uncle told me never to point a gun at someone. i did on accident when i was 7, and i couldnt sit down for a week. but when pet peeves did it, all they said was "well, it wasnt loaded."
7. the same hunter that tells you hes managing the property by dumping furniture andscrap metal and trash out right beside your stand.
8. the same hunter that left your stand with a pile of cigarette butts in them.
9. the same hunter who drives his truck up to his/your stand and hunts with it right under him.
10. the same hunter who shoots great blue herons at your pond because "they'll eat all of the fish"
11. the hunter who tells you not to shoot does from your own stand. (hello!!! managing the doe population is vital for bigger bucks!!!)

i hate this guy. i hope he dies.

-People who say they "meat hunt" but let doe after doe walk by just to shoot a 2yr old 4pt.

Hunters who take yearlings or small immature bucks.
Why? Isn't a two year old 4 pt meat? Last time I checked there wasn't an age restriction on my deer tag. Maybe I don't have a doe tag. Maybe I don't want to shoot does. They are easier to drag with handles on them any way;).

I have a new pet peeve. Hunters that think everyone else should be a trophy hunter. Or that the deer they shoot is "better" than the ones someone else shoots because it's older or has a bigger rack. I personally don't think old mature deer taste very good. How about I save them for someone that really wants them.

I'm in it to shoot deer, not watch them walk by. Its population control and they are tasty to boot. I figure the state doesn't issue tags for me to not kill deer. If you want to sit and watch deer go by until you see the perfect one that will look good on your wall or get you in some book feel free.

Your personal goal is YOUR personal goal, don't hate on someone else because they don't follow it.

My opinion any way.

I guess my pet peeves are

1.) Deer drives on public property
2.) Baiting
3.) Slob hunters that will not even scout land, but just follow someone elses reflectors
4.) Slob hunters that when they see a flash light will still keep coming and setup 30yards away from you
5.) New hunters with semi autos and letting all rounds go on a deer. With me in the woods with them.

Thats right its your personal goal, butYOUR goal may not be how others see it. To each his own. Shooting yearlings and small inmature bucks isnt a goal of mine. I would rather shoot something that has more than 40lbs of meat on it or has milk dripping from its mouth.

RE: Hunting Pet Peeves

im not going to say who it is; he might be registered on my website and want to end me. ;)

but i can say my grandfather, and both aunts own property; about 250 acres. this guy is just ignorant.

some other ignorant things this guy has done:
1. he shot a spike on my grandfathers property. we dont harvest immature deer on our property. he tried to SELL the meat TO MY GRANDFATHER! HOW STUPID CAN YOU BE?!? PLUS, SELLING GAME IS ILLEGAL!
2. My uncle doesnt hunt, yet he tells my uncle that he will "only charge you $5 an hour to hunt his stand" which is on OUR property.
3. my sister's boyfriend shot at a doe and missed. we searched until about 1 am, and decided to call it quits. we began walking back the direction that we came from, when he says "where are ya goin, the trucks the other way. Ya know what... here... everybody turn off your light." so we turned it off. he points his spotlight in a random direction and says, "its this way." What the hell? We followed him and got lost for 2 hours. He obviously had no idea what he was doing. Me and my sisters boyfriend headed back the other way, and he followed. He said when we got out of the woods, "my daddy always told me that if you shut you're light off and point it somewhere, following that direction will get you somewhere."
4. remember when he pointed the gun at my friend and told him he had no right on the property? as a result he got all pissy with me and told me that i need to call HIM whenever i come to MY stand so this wont happen.

I'm gonna tell this guy straight up that he will not hunt my stand anymore. im puttin a trailcam on my stand to see if he is.

Oh man, I'm with Jeff on the trash thing. Move that one to the top of my list. That is one of the reasons I get for not being able to hunt someones land. They used to let someone do it, but they trashed the place and couldn't follow the rules so the owner just doesn't want to be bothered by it anymore.

How hard is is to leave the place the same as was when you went in. Your a hunter for crying out loud why would you trash the land?

Littering is huge pet peeve of mine anyway. Smokers especially piss me off. The world is their ashtray, just throw butts where ever you want, it's ok, really. I swear if one more lit butt hits my windshield I may run someone off the road.

Oops, sorry guys rant over now. I think maybe I've had a bit too much caffeine the past few days;).

My biggest pet peeve is like someone said, "Garbage". I can't stand being in the woods and seeing litter everwhere. I was always taught "what ever you bring in, you bring out, including any spent rounds". Number 2 would be hunters who insist on moving around during daylight hours and doing it very loud. I had two hunters do this and came with in 20 yards of me on public land. One was whistling and the other was kicking leafs everywhere. I had been set up long before first light. Now I know it's public land but where is the common courtesy?

Hooker 07-05-2007 08:45 AM

RE: Hunting Pet Peeves

My pet peeves:

1) I hate poachers. I've had several guys brag to me about how they have killed 15-20 in a season. I always tell them that they are pathetic. I'm sure most of them are lying, but if I ever catch them poaching, I'll turn them in.

2) The so-called "elite" hunters. It's great that you just shoot 160 class bucks, but I can't do that. I don't see that many deer and my family does not buy beef, we eat strictly deer meat. And sometimes a 2 yr old 4 point is the only deer I will see in several weeks, so I'm shooting it. Trust me, I would prefer to shoot a nice buck, but I've never seen a buck that big in my life. (I only seen 12 deer last year. I hunted every weekend and also took 2 weeks off from work and hunted everyday during that period.)

3) TRASH in the woods

4) Hunters making drives on public land at 8 in the morning.

5) Guys buying all of the best equipment and having the best places to hunt and only hunting one morning the entire season. (I guess that is just me being jealous, but it drives me crazy!)

GRIZZLYMAN 07-05-2007 11:00 AM

RE: Hunting Pet Peeves

Hmm....

1) People tresspassing on my land/leases,
2) People running their dogs on my land/leases to run deer on to their land because they have shot and otherwise scared every deer off of their land,
3) My BIL's younger brother who hunts on our leases without paying a dime and shoots anything that moves off of areas that I hunt, and no one else in our group is suppossed to(I hope I have that one solved this year),
4) Having to wear blaze orange during part of the early bow season because of muzzleloading season.....I hunt private land, and nobody in our group hunts with muzzleloaders,
5) Hearing a caravan pull in just on the other side of our lease line, with people hooping and hollerin' on the first day of gun season (see 1 & 2 above).

I'll stop now before I get mad.[:@]

As far as people putting other family member's tags on their kill so that they can continue to hunt.............legal some places and not others - that is understood.

But I believe in the end it is good for the management of the herd. The folks issuing the tags are issuing the amount of tags that they would like to see harvested to balance the herd. So this helps keep the herd at a healthy level.

Or am I mistaken?

Then to people heading out after sun up...........

Lots of good reasons posted by Jeff. But occasionally we will do it. Let all the guys get out early and have the late guy get out and kinda "still hunt" to his stand with the goal of it ultimately turning into a little half-hearted mini drive. You would be suprised how many times we bag deer as they walk away from sounds they don't like.

AGREED!!!

I had a guy last season walking around 1/2 hour after sunrise, sees me from 100 yards away and heads my direction. When he was about 20 yards away, he shouts "Hey, ya seen deer any yet?"

"No and with your dumb@$$ screaming at me I doubt I'll be seeing any more in the immediate future."

Worst parts: this was opening morning and due to work/school schedule I only get to deer hunt 3-4 days a year.

Ironic part was that the following Saturday at almost that exact time I shot my doe.

imo, still no excuse. when your hunting public land and you know there are are hunters around...there is absolutely no reason to ruin other hunters hunts because you woke up late or run out of gas or had to go back home because you forgot something, etc. i never walk in the woods late out of respect for other hunters.
