I've used this recipe for many years before IL changed their policy on mineral licks. It is indeed very effective at attracting whitetails during the off season and during the critical antler growing and fawning period. Locate a site fairly close to water and the deer will utilize it almost daily. I still have several friends that useone every season.

The messy liquids or syruptypes have proven far less effective than the granular typemineral sites.

I just mix Di-Cal and trace mineral salt 50/50. I don't understand the need of putting in ice cream salt or other salt as the trace mineral salt is 90 something percent salt.

I've got a question. I put in a lick this spring and it is being used pretty well. What do you do after they have dug the big hole in the ground and you want to replenish it. Do you bring in dirt from somewhere else or just keep digging the hole deeper?

They'll only dig the hole so deep before they begin to widen it considerably. Besides, rain will wash the minerals into the dirt all around the site so you can continue to use the same location for many years.
