RE: Best all around shotgun?
ORIGINAL: StrutNtom lol this thread is funny....goes from a $300 shot gun to a $1,200 shot gun. LoL Keep em' coming guys. No kidding, The guy asks if a 870 would be a good all around shot gun and everyone else tries to tell him to buy something else........most of them probably never owned a 870. The only thing cheap about a express vs a higher dollar 870 is the wood and finish, guts are all the same. Ibought a original Express combo 20+ years ago as my first "new" shotgun to go with my other hand me downs. The wood wascheap. After the forearm cracked while drying out from a wet deer season I bought the Remington synthetic replacement stock and forearm from Cabelas for $85. I have a Remington 870 "Express". a 1187 SPS, a Mossberg 500, a old Stevens pump 20 gauge, and a couple of old crappy single shots in 410 thru 12 gauge. My "go to shotgun" is that old 870. |
RE: Best all around shotgun?
I love my moss. 835. have the camo syn. stock, and riffled barrel for deer. can't beat it for the price and i have never had a problem with mossberg. my remington 870 is also a great gun. kind of a toss up.

RE: Best all around shotgun?
870 hands down great gun. I was a little upset with the quality of the machining on the vent rib of my son's 20ga. 870 that he got for xmas this year. It has a flare-up to the right just behind the bead which makes it a little hard to aim until you get used to it.
I never had an 835 moss, but I did have a 500, as well as a bolt action slug gun. That was enough for me. KP |
RE: Best all around shotgun?
I have two 870's express's, 3 browning golds, one BPS, and one 1187. I do love my golds, no doubt, but I still use my 870 with a slug barrel in the swamps. Fine gun that has been dropped, beat, and submerged in salt water.

RE: Best all around shotgun?
ORIGINAL: Mike Hill Let me tell you that more game has fallen to the Remington 870 then probibly any two other shotguns on the market. I am a Brownig auto-5 man and always will be. But for what ever reason you are looking at the 870 (money, amout of time using) I don't care. It is a fine shotgun and can be used for all legal game with a shotgun. In 1988 my sons were comming of age to start hunting we lived in a shotgun for deer only so I didn't have a lot of money I bought 2 870's one for each of them. Let me tell you a lot of deer have fallen to those 2 guns with buck shot and slugs they both have the standard 28 in barrels with the Rem chokes. They are still using those guns at times today and have not spent a single second in with the gunsmith. I wish I could say the same for all my other shotguns. The 870 is a work horse and well worth the investment. No matter what any one else tells you. Its a great first shotgun. Good Luck dd |
