Default Someone new to deer hunting.

In my previous years I have stuck to rabbit hunting, but this year I am going to take up deer hunting. Before I go out and start looking for a weapon, I was wanting to get some opinions on a rifle.I want to get a weapon that has plenty of power, that is accurate and is economical to shoot. My friends and family love to shoot and I do not want to get a gun thatis expensive tobring to the range for a day of shooting.

Before posting here I was looking to get something around a 30-06 or so. Any opinions would be most appreciated.

270 has plenty of power and in my opinion is a great all around gun. You can take anything in North America other than maybe griz, and moose this. The 30-06 is also a great gun maybe a bit much for whitetail but will work. If your just going to hunt whitetail I would go with the 270.

A .308 Winchester is what i prefer first. I also like a .270 you can get a little more range out of it than the .308 but i don't have a shot over 200 yards where i hunt so but it is what you prefer and what you like. everyone has there on opinion. but I believe a 30-06 is a little much.

If you're looking for a dedicated deer gun, I would probably go with .270, 7mm-08, or .25-06. Less recoil than either a .308 or 30-06 and I don't think that you really need that extra power (and recoil) until you step up a class in game. .270 ammo would be easiest to find, but the others wouldn't be particularly difficult if you have a dedicated sporting goods store around. If you're looking for a combo deer/elk/moose gun, then by all means get one of the .30 cal.

.270 is about as good as you can get. Lots of choices of ammo and it can be bought just about anywhere. Be sure to top your rifle with a quality scope, don't waste your money on a cheap one.

Id say 270 or 308, the 30-06 is not too much for deer. I know people that have been using them all their lives on deer. But your decision should be based on the terrain youre hunting. is it thicker brushy country, flat country, hill country, forest, etc. How long are your shots going to be? For open, long range shooting the 270 or 308 will be perfect for the job. Go with at least 165 gr bullet. For thicker brushier area the 30-06 will be perfect, as the bullet is bigger and wont get knocked off as much when shooting through brush and works great for long distance open shooting as well. Keep these things in mind.

I would suggest a .308, but you mentioned price to shoot and it seems you want alot of power so go 30-06. Either way get a bolt action though.
