What's Your Best Scent Reducing Methods
Each of us have our own "procedure" for reducing our human scents and using cover/lure scents to help us get closer to those big bucks. I am facinated by the rituals that we go through in order to do this. Personally I wash my clothes (even a dedicated pair of underware) in Scent Killer Detergent a couple night before the hunt, then I place them in a Space Bag (the kind you vaccum out the air) to store them away from any outside air. The morning of the hunts I use scent killer boday wash to wash my hair and body. I then powder myself with ATSKO's N-O-DOR (a thin coat all over my body) then I use scent killer deodorant. As I layer my clothes I spray each layer with Carbon Blast Plus and also re-up throughout the course of the day.
To elimate my scents in the field I use a critter scent like raccon or even deer urine and to lure I use estrus urine and sometime concentrated corn scent (though it may be too foreign for some locations). This is my method in a nut shell. Please Share yours. |
RE: What's Your Best Scent Reducing Methods
That sounds like an awful lot of work to me.
I normally wash in scent killer detergent, place clothes in a bag with pine branches and always make sure I hunt a stand that the wind is in my favor. We as hunters sometimes get anal about eliminating our scent when the best thing we can do is pay attention to the wind. I have a good friend that consistently takes very nice bucks every year. He washes his clothes in regular detergent, does nothing to eliminate his scent but he always, always pays attention to the wind. All efforts to eliminate human scent are a waste of time if the wind is blowing your scent across the area you are hunting. |
RE: What's Your Best Scent Reducing Methods
The first thing I do isrun the washer empty on rinse to help remove any detergent residue from the basket. Then I wash my hunting clothes with Scent-A-Way detergent and dry them with earth-scented dryer sheets. As soon as they're dry and cooled, they go into a large trash bag that I seal up as best I can and put in a plastic bin. I spray my boots and gloves inside and outwith scent killer, dry them outside in the sun,and bag them up as well.
On the morning of the hunt, I shower with scent killing soap and deodorant, takemy clothing out, get dressed, and spray my boots (especially the soles) one more time before heading into the field. |

Red Lion,
At least he would be a troll who actually learned English and is talking about something hunting related. :D I'm about maxed out on what I am going to do on scent control. If I do much more, hunting = not fun. I do usually run empty load through the washer, and I use some kind of scent kill laundry detergent, put my clothes in a big tupperware container with a few sticks and leaves, take shower with scentkiller stuff morning of, wear Enduraskin, sometimes put clothes on after getting out of truck, and spray myself down with scentkiller prior to going in the field. That's enough for me. I already get laughed at for doing all that. I don't always strictly adhere to this. I'll be hungry and wear my hunting clothes in the camp with bacon and egg grease all in the air. C'est la vie. |
RE: What's Your Best Scent Reducing Methods
I wash clothes in scent-a-way and then hang them outside in the tree to dry. then put the in a xtra-large zip-lock bag and body wise. i wash in no scent soap and shampoo and use the towels i washed with my hunting clothes.and put on a pair of jeans and shirt i washed to wear to the feild in no scent and as getted ready i spray scent killer on each layer. and wear rubber boots.

RE: What's Your Best Scent Reducing Methods
Best scent reducing method I've ever heard of is the one that can be proven. Someone let me know when this happens!
I've tried it all and still got winded! Since about 3 years ago I've been saving my money and spending more time finding more ground to spread my time around so I don't have to worry about over sacturating areas by hunting them over and over again! First time in is the best means to catch them by surprise! Surprise kills...... |
RE: What's Your Best Scent Reducing Methods
WHOAA....I post a thread...go on vacation and come back to accusations of being a troll or an well-spoken salesman. I am an avid bow hunter just like you all who feels that I, as well as many, are over doing the no-scent procedures. I am just curious as to what everyone else is doing so that I can gauge what I am doing that may be unneccesary. I have enjoyed all your opinions and NO, I AM NOT SELLING ANYTHING!!!!! Unless someone is looking for a rifle scope then I would be selling something!! HA HA. you guys are too paranoid. Happy Hunting -AJK

RE: What's Your Best Scent Reducing Methods
Someone please let me know when they find a PROOVEN scent elimination system. The scent elimination suits are a waste of money. I no one fella in particular that has one, uses it correctly and still gets busted. I call it a marketing ploy like the whole ORGANIC foodsthing and Angus Beef scams. Just a marketing money making ploy.
I wash my clothes in scent eliminating detergent and then in Arm and Hammer. I air dry them, store them in a plastic bag and plastic container with cedar branches/ cedar shavings. Sometimes my La Cross rubber boots are walked in the cow yard for extra cover scent. |
RE: What's Your Best Scent Reducing Methods
I wash my clothes in scent-free detergent. Then I ALWAYS store my clothes in a air tight plastic pub. That means to and from the woods! I dress at my truck. I hunt areas with ALOT of corn so everytime I get out of the woods I put some parts of the shell from corn and also any sort of wild grass or weeds in the tub with my clothes. Make sure you play the wind right and walk thru as much water as possible on the way in. Also, I wear scent proof rubber boots...All works for me. |

get to tree climb 30 ft up stop no sent Ummm i gotta totally disagree with this one all this will do is possibly have the deer smell you at an even farther disance from your stand, deer that you will probably never even see? Thats If you dont play the wind??? |
RE: What's Your Best Scent Reducing Methods
I wash my clothes in baking soda and rinse them twice b/c baking soda absorbs scent so I want my clothesto be rinsed free of the baking soda. I use Odor Nix which is also used in hospitals. hands down the best product i've ever used. Here in SC our season opens in early Sept. and some parts even Aug. So its still well in the 90's.
Since I started using thermal cell and Odor Nixmost of my days in the tree stand (early season) are in a tshirt and a pair of shorts. Even with all of that said, hunting the correct wind is the best approach. |

Almost the entire scent reduction products are scams. Scent-Lok and similiar brands do not work, simple as that. As far as my method, all I do is wash my clothes in a cover scent detergent, put them in the special bag I got from cabelas, and put my boots on in the woods. But most importantly I play the wind.
Don't be fooled into buying special scent reducing clothes people! |

Hunt downwind. |
RE: What's Your Best Scent Reducing Methods
We the young bucks at camp practice scent control some to the extreme. The guy in camp below us will wear is camo while running chainsaw etc he hunts the wind and never has a shortage of impressive bucks on the meatpole. The wind can be your best friend or your worst enemy play it right and have a stand for every wind direction and you are golden. Also if in ravines or rather hilly terrain pay attention to the morn and evening thermals

RE: What's Your Best Scent Reducing Methods
I hunt in an area that has a few camps around. They burn wood and the deer are pretty much used to wood smoke, so I like to get some wood smoke on my clothes and use raccoon cover scent on the bushes where I am setting in. This works OK to me.

RE: What's Your Best Scent Reducing Methods
StrutnTom- you aren't thinking my man, Don't you know anout the "certified" angus beef craze? A beefer only needs to be 30% angus in order to be labeled certified angus beef at your local supermarket.
As far as the "organic" food craze, most of these vegies and fruits are not grown organically. It's a marketing ploy by farmers to crank prices. Same with angus beef. ScentLok is a marketing scheme geared toward hunters just like the two food products I mentioned are geared toward consumers. |

1. clean set of clothes every time you got out
2. clean body every time you go out 3. Scent Killer on everyting when out of truck 4. downwind always never an exception This is futile with a bad setup or entrance into your stand. |
