RE: Recommended gear for a first deer hunt

You're already being attracted to the fancy scam market.

1. You aren't going to need a rangefinder. The accurate ones are expensive, and you won't be shooting far enough to need one.

2. You don't need "rain gear." Just get something waterproof, basically everything Cabela's sells is waterproof. But if you're asking how important staying dry is, it's the differnce between a positive and a negative experience. And as far as camoflauge itself goes, deer can't see a full range of colors nor can a lot of game. Movement will give you away quicker than any camo pattern or lack thereof. But make sure you cover up all your skin because human flesh is a beacon to wildlife. And one more tip about concealment, try to stay in shadows.

3. The most important thing about playing the scent game, is playing the wind correctly. You want the deer upwind of you (you want the wind blowing in your face.) But as far as products go the only thing necessary is a cover scent laundry detergent, putting your clothes in an airtight bag, and putting your boots on in the woods. And sparying yourself down with something in the woods. Scent-Lok and other brands of the sort do not work.

If you're wearing woodland camo, where would you wear hunter's orange? Is the purpose just so other hunters will see you? Are deer color blind to orange?

Thanks!

Yes the purpose of wearing Hunter Orange is so you don't get shot, and it doesn't matter where you wear it. Typically hunters wear an orange hat and an orange vest. And yes deer are completely oblivious to the color orange.

I thinka real good idea for you would be to enlist in Hunter's Ed.
