Deer carcass dumping

I'm new to hunting, and was wondering why I keep seeing deer carcasses (skin and bones) dumped on the side of the road. I found two carcasses right at the entrance to an area I was scouting for muzzleloader season.

When I clean fish streamside, I put the fish innards back in the stream to provide nutrients for other living creatures in the stream. Could this be an explanation, or is just another case of a minority of hunters being thoughtless and lazy? Thanks.

My bet is laziness. Although where I hunt, the coyotes take care of anything beside bone pretty quick.

I've seen this several times in the many years I've been hunting. It has never really bothered me too much, BUT. Now with the threat of CWD spreading across the country, I think it's time to stop this. Our landfill won't take dead animals (or parts) so maybe we should dig a big hole or make a big fire to dispose of the leftovers. Jim

Thoughtless, lazy and illegal.

Once the carcass is stripped of meat, it would be simple for you to put what is left in a small hole. But this is too much to ask of most hunters, and yes yotes usually take care of what is left. Or in your case Timbercruiser, Gators. This kind of thing happens all the time and it isa shame that if it is going to be done, that they do not put it in an out of the way spot for varmits to devour.

The best of luck in all your hunting endeavors!!!

God Bless,
Dave

I agree with everyone,it show's no respect to the sport. We give our hide's to a local guy and as far as the bones go we take them back to a swail on our property the foxes, bobcat's and what ever else that chew's on them make's short work out of it.I think they should pass a law on it and even lose hunting privlage's for a year and a fine.I can about imagine how the anti's think about it and it give's them something else to stomp there feet about

Find a guy with a dog sled team. Fortunately, (and unfortunately) I have one right next door. He takes any bones and scraps I have left over.

But to answer your question: Thoughtless and lazy. At least take them back into the woods.

I don't want to belabor my point, but driving down a main road near my home yesterday, I saw yet another carcass dumped directly on the road side in plain view. I am biased being a hunter, but I can see how a site like that could turn my neighbors into anti-hunting advocates, and use incidents like that as ammunition for their anti-hunting campaign. Please, either bury the carcass or drag it to some place that is not on full public display! Thanks.

I live in ny so sometimes the ground is to frozen to dig, I take mine way out in the woods and let nature do the rest. Once when my wife and I where hiking in the woods I found a big garbage bag(lawn and leave type). We where 200-300 yards into the woods, well curiosity got the best of me so I opened the bag you quessed it full of deer parts(smelled great) I dumped the animal parts a through out the bag.

I recently saw a complete carcass that was beheaded on the side of the road. Kinda disappointing to see people do stuff like that.

The worst thing you can do with deer remains is throw them in a stream or creek from a bridge but unfortunately I see way too much of that. Scavengers can't take full advantage of the remains when it's under water.
I also see more than enough remains dumped at pull ins and roadside, never could understand why a fella couldn't drag them back into the woods at least 20 yards or so, might still be able to smell it but at least the casual passerby won't see it. I normally carry 2 coolers in the truck, one for meat and the other for remains that I drag back into the woods. Digging a hole is the prescribed method but quite honestly very impractical.
JUST DON'T THROW THEM INTO THE WATER!!!

Its a bad situation when this happens. I am opening it back up for suggestions on what to do but please try to keep in that direction and not talk about dumping carcusses in plain view. The antis will take that and run with it. My suggestion would be contact a local taxidermist and ask him how he goes about it or even if the local grocery store butcher has any idears.

Thanks Timbercruiser for the e-mail

Lazy and illegal. I own my own land and when I have finished processing my deer I will take what is left over and place it out by a river that runs through my land. By the next day it will be eaten or draged off. If I am not on the land I will dig a hole and burry the remains (what little there are).

Be carful putting fish parts back in a lake. Most places it is illegal. What doesnt get eaten will pollute the water. As for a river I dont know, I dont get to fish rivers much.

I have on occasion...taken the hide and head of a deer and hang it off a tree and shoot coyotes at night....it pays pretty good here cause we have a $50 bounty on coyot's....not that this cures the problem....but burying them is about the best way to go....

I have the answer to this problem here in Wi the highway crews just paint the carcasses florecent orange and then leave them to rott along the roads it must make them less odvious to passing traffic or so I guess. lately I have been having to pay 28$ per head just to have dead stock hauled away by the rendering plant witch makes pure profit off of a farmers loss. So maybe the next time I lose a cow I will get me some of that spray paint and drag her out by the road to.

(I can skin a buck or run a trout line)

Fullback that is what my partner did with two rib cages ,hung them in a tree for coyote bait. Then when he went back that evening a bear had already got the bait .all there was left is the rope he used to hang them . The look on his face was priceless .

I have my own woods and have quite a few fallen trees. I dump the carcus in the root hole and throw some logs on top. It dissappears by summer. I seldom see any bones around the woods, I wonder where it all goes. One Shot One Kill Striper Phil

If you dump them in the woods, critters will clean them up. Dumping by the road is lazy.

Considered illegal dumping in WV. If on private property, do your own thing, but please do not dump them in the public hunting area parking lots that I use. I have to explain them to my kids...at least have the decency to drag them off the road 20yds or so..

They should have a segment of the hunter's safety course on dealing with the carcasses. I keep mine cold or frozen until garbage day and out it goes..seperated into several bags so the the trash man doesn't get upset.

Professional processors usually ship them off to the rendering plant.

Don't dump them into rivers or streams either. It's water pollution. Yes, you might think that the turtles and catfish clean them up but there is a process of breaking down what remains that is known as BOD (Biological Oxygen Demand). It takes so much Oxygen to break down that carcass and it comes from the disolved Oxygen in the water..Less then for aquatic life..

Hector was that on I-40 East Bound outside of Burlington? Big bodied deer and i saw it the same day but it has disappeared. I am assuming a car hit it and some enterprising person has the Rack at a taxidermist.

Before the season each year we take a back-hoe and dig a pit about 12 feet deep and all remains are placed in there. We then take hydrated lime and place on the remains to keep them from smelling. All blood and water runs through a pipe from the cooler-skinning shed area into the pit. Works real good.

Whatever you do, keep the carcass out of sight from other people. I just have a couple big ditches by my house I dump into. And they're usually cleaned up by coyotes within a few days. If you have a spot that its alright to dump in and away from the public, why dig a hole and bury them? Might as well let the hungry predators salvage whats left of it.
