VER Y VERY Important !!!!please read and help
GO ahead and call me a dumb@###$#$#%&^&^%^$%&%*&*)_(&*&^^% and a (^%^$#@#@##$#$#$#%$@%@%. But I think that I am going to buy a new rifle. Before I do I want to ask the experts (that would be you all) about the gun I am buying. Accuracy and distance is what I want to accomplish. I have seen online the Remington 700 VS, Rem. 700 VS SF and the Rem. 700 VLS. What is the difference? I am leaning more towards the VS b/c information is avalible on this gun more than the others. Am I mistaking or is this a "sniper" rifle? And I HOPE that is can be used for deer hunting I have priced one for $700 anyone know of anywhere else to buy one cheaper? Thanks.

Oh one other thing. My Wheatherby 7mm is NEW very new and well taken care of. No sense in having two rifles would anyone like to buy it?
|
RE: VER Y VERY Important !!!!please read and help
No, none of what you mentioned are "sniper rifles". They can all be made to be very accurate, but the remington 700 PSS (police sniper system) is remington's "sniper rifle". However, it's only available to civilians in very restricted areas, good luck finding one. I've been looking for years for one and just now found out where I could order one in, for a hundred dollar mark up plus his order in fee. $700 is a pretty good price for one, but there are better rifles around that would cost less. I know a million guys who use 700's for deer hunting, but usually in Adl/Bdl's, but a couple use VLS's and all of them like remingtons. I suggest going to their site and looking up the individual differences.
Screw the 10 ring, keep them in the zero!!! |
RE: VER Y VERY Important !!!!please read and help
Rems VS series is their varmit rifle. I can't recall what calibers are available but it will be limited to 22-250, 220, 243, 6mm or maybe 308..you'll have to check. These guns have the heavy target or varmit barrel and usually the varmiter choice calibers available.
What caliber do you want? Are you wanting something with less recoil? Why would you like a new rifle? If you post these answers i am sure many will give you ideas. |
RE: VER Y VERY Important !!!!please read and help
Ok, I just want a rifle to deer hunt with and if I choose to bust one at 800 yards. What rifle will do that? Still what about the Remington 700 VS. I don't understand what is the big deal and what are some other rifles that are better?

RE: VER Y VERY Important !!!!please read and help
I don't really care if it kicks. I have a sinlge shot slug gun that will knock you out of your stand and I love it. Just the feel of the power you are shooting. ANyway, the most accurate but yet legal to deer hunt with is the cal. I want. Someone said "sniper" and rem 700 vs in the same sentence so I want one. HELP. I would love to go USMC Sharpe Shooter but kinda married and that is a single mans life. At least I can pretend with a monster buck. lol

RE: VER Y VERY Important !!!!please read and help
ceaser8...800 yards? I don't know many who can claim they can take a deer at 800 yards...why do you want that kind of range?
As to would VS be enough check on what calibers are available, then you'll be able to tell if it is good for deer, etc. What caliber are you looking for? Maybe more importantly what in a new rifle are you looking for? |
RE: VER Y VERY Important !!!!please read and help
I don't really know about 800 yards but you get the picture right, RANGE and ACCURACY. The cal. doesn't matter. The rifle....I don't know that i whay I am asking you guys.

RE: VER Y VERY Important !!!!please read and help
Most rifles are capable of far more accuracy than the guy pulling the trigger. I have had good liuck with most of my guns: i would recommend looking at Rem, Win, Browning, Savage or Tikka. They all seem plenty accurate given you top them with some decent glass and do your part.
As far as caliber, deer and reasonable distance: 260, 270, 280, 7mm-08, 2506 or mags will do fine(7 rem mag, 7RUM, 300's). Really the choice is yours, just pick a caliber you want, in a style and manufacturer that fits you and top it with some good glass. I bet they will be plenty accurate for yeah. (If you buy factory ammo, then you should look at availablity, choice, etc) Or get a custom built gun on what ever action you prefer. May cost a bit more but then you can make exactly what you want. BTW, I think an 800 yard shot on a deer is never required and not something that should be viewed as a channel for you desire to snipe! If you want to shoot those long distances do it on paper, it don't bleed and suffer if you miss by a few inches! |
RE: VER Y VERY Important !!!!please read and help
I would look at the sendero as it is made exactly for your purpose which is taking big game at longer distances. It is available in stainless fluted and the ones I have shot have been very accurate for a factory rifle. As for the distances you intend to shoot I would encourage you to practise at long distance targets and to shoot at game only at the distances that you can consistantly hit targets at.To become proficient at even 400 or 500 yards requires a great deal of practise on a regular basis along with a good quality rangefinder. You should decide just how much time and expense you are willing to put into developing your skills to the level required to shoot at longer distances before spending the cash to buy the equipment necessary for long range shooting. Many people would like to shoot at long distances but do not have access to a long distance range and won't spend the time and cash necessary to shoot several hundred rounds a year practising to maintain their skills.

RE: VER Y VERY Important !!!!please read and help
the difference between barrels is what they are made out of and how well the machines in the factory were operating the day your barrel was made...i worked at remington for a while, you'd be amazed at all the differet things that could go wrong during production

RE: VER Y VERY Important !!!!please read and help
First, you better check with the state your hunting in! Some states limit the caliber, and or the weight/grain of the bullet to a degree.
If range and hunting are in the same paragraph, check out that new 7mm win short mag! It has pretty good ratings and range to boot! 800 yards is a hell of a shot, better take in account the cuvrature of the earth! hee hee! I use a .300 win mag in a Savage rifle, and it's one of the best I've shot. I do like my Browning Stainless Stalker .338, though!! GOOD LUCK!!---Remember, opinions are like..........everyone has one!!! IN THE KILLZONE! |
RE: VER Y VERY Important !!!!please read and help
I do know the mechanics for sharpe shooting, formulas for windage, elevation, cold or hot weather. The use of Mil dots, when or when not to hold off for wind. I just want the best. If a USMC sniper uses a pink redrider BB gun and kills enemys at 1200 yards with it then by george that is what I want. I read that Rem. 700 VS and PSS are very accurate rifles and I just don't understand accuracy. What is accuracy. IF my 7mm shoots dead on at 300 yards how is the 700 VS or PSS going to be anymore accurate than that? But my point in all of this gun questions is to find out if the VS or PSS is more accurate and is it enough to buy one and not use my 7mm anymore.

ceaser8 what ever you do don't sell your other gun, it's an investment and farther down the road you'll say "boy i wish that i still had that weatherby. besides you might have company show up one day and they'll need something to shoot too.
IF IT IS TO BE...... IT IS UP TO ME...... |
RE: VER Y VERY Important !!!!please read and help
Ceaser8-You say your 7mm is dead on at 300 yards. That would mean that all bullets fired would go into the same 7mm hole.Accuracy is basically how close to this ideal that you really get.The truth is that most factory rifles shooting factory loads are not capable of shooting consistant groups of any better than 4" to 6" at 300 yards reguardless of who is shooting them. Some factory rifles would even double these group sizes.A very accurate rifle with properly developed loads and a skilled shooter on the other hand could consistantly shoot groups under 2" at 300 yards.Rifles such as the sendero and vssf and models from other manufacturers are an attempt to produce a more accurate than standard rifle for longer range hunting. On average they will shoot smaller groups than the standard sporters but to be really accurate they must have proper loads developed for them and must be used by a shooter that has developed much better than average shooting skills who is willing to learn this particular guns trajectories at various distances and practise constantly at various ranges to keep his shooting skills sharp. The most accurate rifle in the world would be of little advantage to the average shooter as he does not have the skills to take advantage of it's accuracy. That is unfortunately the problem as many inexperienced shooters are buying heavy barreled long range guns in very flat shooting chamberings thinking that the will magically become long rang shooters. The truth is most will never put forth the effort it takes to become a long range shooter and will be mediocre shooters at best.Simply reading trajectory tables will not make you a long range shooter.Only long range shooting will make you a long rang shooter. To practise long range shooting you must have long distance range facilities, proper equipment and the time and dedication to practise and learn.

RE: VER Y VERY Important !!!!please read and help
ceaser8,
As far as accuracy is concerned. Both the Rem 700 VS and PSS are very accurate rifles and depending on the caliber you get and if you handload some good loads, you can get some good long distant shots (I paper shoot long distance, wouldnt hunt that far out). Honestly, they are nearly the same gun. Like someone about said, the PSS is Rem's police sniper, but the VS is practically the same thing with a couple of (in my opinion) minor differences. Not enough to warrant the PSS for a hunter. I say, if you can, and just dont want to use your 7mm, get the 700VS. WITH PRACTICE, and a LOT of it, you will love it. And in my experience, $700 is an average price for one, just dont forget to allow money for all the trimmings. G'luck with your choice. One Shot, One Kill Hunting is the one sport where, if you are playing right, the other team doesn't even know you're playing. |
RE: VER Y VERY Important !!!!please read and help
I completely understand your wanting to have a gun that will nail a deer to a tree but this guy you are questioning is more that enough to take any dang game down! What are you truly trying to acomplish? If you want to take any game down buy this gun... Remember, the power of this gun will in most any range simply go stright through a (deer) inturn, yes killing it but for the money and the power you are talking about spending , why? If this is the rifle you want then so be it. On the other hand your are talking about hunting, deer. I have been very fortunate to be able to experience many acpects of hunting, most of all,the best gun I have TRULY found to hunt deer with is a 243 using,100gr. 1 to more than 250 yards this rifle will take down any deer, period! I do have a selection of rifles, for many types of large game, ranging from 30-06, 30-30, 7MM, 308 and even slug guns namely, 20ga and 12ga. So far the most reliable hunting choice has been my 243. Great path, range and good impact!!! 800 yds? Like you said Range and accuracy. The 243 will do all of the above, and so will most of all other calibers, but the 243 is a well balenced rifle for deer hunting. I have even taken much larger game with this caliber, w/ one shot! And as far as distance a 243 will for the most part exceed most other guns, with accuracy. Use a GOOD scope and nail your target right, that's it, all is said. KEEP HUNTING THE GREAT OUTDOORS & GOD ALIVE, PASS IT ON! |
RE: VER Y VERY Important !!!!please read and help
If your gun shoots as good as you say at 300, I think you would be fine even with your 7mm (I'm assuming it is a magnum) for most realistic shots while deer hunting. What stubblejumper said is exactly right. IMO, you'd have to be an incredible shot, with tons of practice to consistently shoot good at 800yds. Not many folks could actually do it. Heck even shooting 400-500 yds is tough, even with good equipment and plenty of practice. Nothing personal, but to say you want to shoot 800 yds at deer is probably about as stupid of statement as I've ever heard. Even at 300-400 it is very easy to miss or wound one, even if you are an accomplished shooter. Sounds more like a case of ego to me. But....if you are absolutely sold on having to have the biggest and baddest out there, get the sendero in .300 ultra mag. Then with alot of practice, and an extremely sore shoulder, and an empty wallet, you may be able to take some game at long range.
A better option IMO, practice with the one you have, possibly have it accurized, and most of all....learn how to get the deer in closer, you'll be alot better off. |
RE: VER Y VERY Important !!!!please read and help
I have decieded to keep my 7mm. I have talked to some of my USMC friends at SD Ca. They say that most of the sharpe shooters are using the 7 Mags. B/c they are long range and potent at long ranges. I might get a bull barrel for it but that is it. By the way where can I get a bull barrel for it?
|
RE: VER Y VERY Important !!!!please read and help
The gun you own will probably be more than adequate as is until you develop your shooting skills to where you can take advantage of a specialized long range rifle. If you do ever get to the point where your skills are good enough to use all of the accuracy your present rifle has you can always have a custom rifle built later.

RE: VER Y VERY Important !!!!please read and help
I will have to also say a Sendero in .300 ultra. Or if you really feal like spending money, buy a Lazzeroni rifle chambered in .308 Warbird.

Have any of you guys read some of Ceasar's other posts? This kid is in real bad need of reality check, he's just jerking your chain here fellas and you guys are falling for it. I'm just waiting for the mods to paddle his little butt and send him on his way.
And Ceasar, you took the words right out off my mouth, you are a dumb@###$#$#%&^&^&^...... Bring your self on down to S.C. and I'll take you hunting 'lil buddy. I'll leave your sorry tail in the swamp and listen to you cry like a baby for yo momma. If the snakes don't getcha the skeeters sho 'nuff will. |
RE: VER Y VERY Important !!!!please read and help
Good post Rem7400, I was kinda thinking the same thing. Either this guy is extremely ignorant (or dangerous), by some of the posts he has made. Either way he needs help and not the kind he's gonna find here. It scares me that this kind of mentality can actually buy a gun, much less one that he describes. No way would I want to be in the woods with this guy!

RE: VER Y VERY Important !!!!please read and help
Talking to Hollywood Marines at MCRD about "long range shooting" will not give any accurate info. There are no snipers attached to the recruit depot. Quit listening to BS'rs and being so naive. No scout snipers would recommend 800 yd shots at a game animal. Believe me.

I don't think theres any benifit to let this go any longer. All pertaining information has already been offered up. To let it continue I feel it will start to get adbusive.
