Why do some bucks have missing hair
On their backs? About where their shoulder blades come up and just behind sometimes. Not too big but tennis ball to grapefruit sized bare skin. I shot a deer 2 years ago that had this and many deer on the Outdoor Channel on various shows have this phenomenon.

RE: Why do some bucks have missing hair
Never saw that, but I have seen many bucks that have hair rubbed off of their briskets..Breeder bucks they are...lots of activity rubbing the hair off their chests from mounting does....
And those does...if you see one that passes by look at the hair directly behind the sholder blades...if it scruffed up...stand by...she's been mounted quite a bit and Mr. Buckey will not be far behind... Edited by - cyclone on 12/13/2002 07:41:32 |
RE: Why do some bucks have missing hair
I shot a nice buck this season and it had the same thing. I was also
wondering about it. |
RE: Why do some bucks have missing hair
Most of the times its caused by bucks ducking under fences.

RE: Why do some bucks have missing hair
I don't think it's fences otherwise why aren't there any antelope with this bare skin? They always go under year around rather than leap. It's not mangy either as the spots are clean skin.

Their not members of hair club for deer. Its a sensitive subject.

RE: Why do some bucks have missing hair
no your all wrong..this is caused by "Buck Pattern Baldness"..very common in older bucks or younger ones that have used too much hair gel.

RE: Why do some bucks have missing hair
Being a taxidermist and seeing alot of bucks, this way, it looks as if it is from rubbing their antlers on their back ? I've never seen it on small racks nor spikes .
I shall check into it more, now,i just never paid any mind to it ! Mounting Man/in PA. |

That's where BIGFOOT tried to grab a hold of them KEEP HUNTING THE GREAT OUTDOORS & GOD ALIVE, PASS IT ON! |
RE: Why do some bucks have missing hair
Its from crawling under barb wire fences. I have a stand near a fence and have seen it with my own eys. They can't bend down far enough to keep that high spot from hitting. I have killed spikes on up to nine pointers with the same spot. Set a camera up near a fence crossing and you will see it too.

RE: Why do some bucks have missing hair
the hair missing on the back is simply explained.the buck i shot the year had very wide antlers so he could reach to his back if he had an itch.from rubbing the itch with his antlers and against things,he rubbed the hair off.also check out hair loss at the leg joints by that gland.they rub the gland together to get that musky tarsal gland stuff to come out to make scrapes and rub all the hair off.brisket means breeding.

scrub,i didnt finish reading everything before i posted.we dont have fences in our area.our land isnt surrounded by fences.only a few downded scattered ones that they can easily jump.i dont think its the fences here that does it.

RE: Why do some bucks have missing hair
I think it's because they're not using Rogaine.

RE: Why do some bucks have missing hair
I'm telling you guys, it's BIGFOOT. Hair is missing and brow tines are broken. Sounds like to me that it's either the fence lines or the large antlers. But, dont forget Bigfoot! KEEP HUNTING THE GREAT OUTDOORS & GOD ALIVE, PASS IT ON! |
RE: Why do some bucks have missing hair
It seems to me most (98%) deer jump fences. I've noticed that it's only on the bigger antelered deer too. Might be the antlers after all. But it always seems to be once the rut has started because our deercam photos never show it until later in the winter.
