RE: when do u gut them?
I like to gut my deer in the woods and clean them up at home.

RE: when do u gut them?
I gut mine as soon as possible but never in the woods. I always take it home and gut it then hang it. I hate gutting things in the woods.
I would never wait more than a couple of hours to gut them out. I think as long as it's warm it's good. |
RE: when do u gut them?
Kill it, tag it, gut it.

RE: when do u gut them?
i always gut them where they fall, even if I am going to continue to hunt the spot. I have had deer come by and not even pay attention to the gut pile.

RE: when do u gut them?
one time i had to drag a un-gutted buck through woods across river(witch was easy in the water.,) and back through woods again., i forgot my knife and i was only going to cross the river once.,so with that being said ., i gut them a.s.a.p. and i to have to drag since i hunt public land and there are no motorized vehicles allowed

RE: when do u gut them?
ORIGINAL: zrexpilot ORIGINAL: PreacherTony ORIGINAL: retrieverman I haven't gutted a deer in years, but I am cleaning my deer within 30 minutes of the shot. I hang, skin, and debone with the guts still in the body cavity, and I DO GET THE TENDERLOINS. |
RE: when do u gut them?
Have always gutted um on the spot and will continue to do so. I did just recently meet a guy that has never gutted his own, he doesn't do the butchering either, says it's too easy to just get it into the truck and drive directly to the meat processer and let them do it.

RE: when do u gut them?
I always take and drag them out to the field so the mess is not in the woods around the hunting area. Usually have more than one tag to fill, buck and does.

RE: when do u gut them?
In the field as soon as possible after I get the animal down. You only havea limited time to get the entrails out, the chest opened/propped open and cooled down before the meat will begin to break down, if the body heat isn't dissipated. I think it's a matter of several hours in moderate weather. In very cold weather it might be able to stand over night if you don't find the animal. But there's a chance it'll spoil the meat even then
With large big game, like Elk, you need to get the animal opened up and cool down in short order or it'll affect the quality of the meat. |
