RE: when do u gut them?
ORIGINAL: PreacherTony ORIGINAL: retrieverman I haven't gutted a deer in years, but I am cleaning my deer within 30 minutes of the shot. I hang, skin, and debone with the guts still in the body cavity, and I DO GET THE TENDERLOINS. |
RE: when do u gut them?
ORIGINAL: PreacherTony I wouldn't even think about leaving the guts in! Wild .... as far as the tenderloins, unless your shooting a 6 month old, there is alot of meat with them. Gut 'em right away ..... get the body cooling as soon as possible .... IMO |
RE: when do u gut them?
ORIGINAL: Steve F.in MD It seems to be a regional thing is my observation. Many of my friends in the south do not gut in the field because they can usually drive close to the animal. Here in the NE most people gut em where they fall because we have to drag them out and sometimes that can be a long haul. If the deer has been shot in front of the diaphram (lungs/heart) and it's not too warm (35 or lower)I don't think there is any real urgency to gut them. If the hunt is going on for a few more hours I usually wait. If the conditions dictate that they should be gutted and cooled then I do it immediately. HTH and good luck. |
RE: when do u gut them?
ORIGINAL: CamoCop i normally hunt no less than 1 mile from my vehicle. i just use a game cart to wheel the deer out OR throw them over my shoulders and walk out. Even if I could, I don't trust the other iidiots on public land not to shoot anything brown moving even if it's being carried by bright orange. |
RE: when do u gut them?
I clean mine right where they lay usually. If it is too close to my stand I will maybe move them to a spot further away.

RE: when do u gut them?
Right after I fill outout the tag.
|
RE: when do u gut them?
I gut mine as soon as I get to them in the woods... Sometimes if they go down w/in sight of my stand I will drag a couple hundred yards away... but that is usually not the case.

RE: when do u gut them?
Gut em where they fall... No sense dragging an extra 50 lbs through the woods as it is generally a mile to a mile and a half drag through tough terrain as it is... old school...

RE: when do u gut them?
just curious, to those of you who gut in the field and then drag them out...how do you keep dirt, leaves, etc. out of the body cavity when dragging? from my experiences, rinsing dirt out of your meaat is big pain in the azz
