I have had the same thing happen with a 7mm mag ,a lung shot usually don't put one right down has been my experience. It wasn't the size of the gun ,but where you shot him would be my guess .

try the Winchester PSP,they give a little more shock.through the lungs leaves more to eat.through the shoulder they don't go as far,but a lot of lost meat.
A friend went with me yesterday and took a nice 8pt with 7mm mag.took out lungs a pieace of heart. he ran a good 80 yards befor going down.

my brother did a perfect double lung on a doe at 12yards (yes thats a 12), while sitting on the ground with his muzzelloader (300gr hollowpoint over 100gr BP) and the 140lb doe ran 300 yards. the shot was a perfect double lung shot (i know i gutted it) but it ran all that way. just goes to show you never can tell

I have been lucky because none of my deer have gone over 100 yds. I am using .270 win 130 gr power point

You may lose a little shoulder meat, but every deer I have shot through the shoulder (not behind it) has dropped dead in its tracks.
