SIGHTING IN
I got a 300 WSM and using a 180 grain bullet. Range is only 100 yards. Where should I put the group to be zero'ed at 200??

RE: SIGHTING IN
About 1 1/2 inches high at 100 will put you in the ballpark...
That being said....with long range gun like that I'd be more inclined to go with 2 1/2 to 3 inches high, incase a longer shot presents itself... |
RE: SIGHTING IN
id say around 2 in high.

RE: SIGHTING IN
I also think about 2" or so, but listen to what Hawkeye said. If you sight in 3-3 1/2" high at 100, you will be 4+ at 200, 0+ at 300 and somewhere in the neighborhood of -10 at 400. This is an excellent long range setup.

RE: SIGHTING IN
Tell me the bullet your using and the velocity and I'll run it thru a trajectory program I have. If you don't Know the velocity, tell me what your told it is. Bullet type, spitzer? Give me that stuff and I can get you in the ball park real well.

This will get you in the ball game. Got 2950 fps (just under max Hornady) using a 180 gr spire point.

RE: SIGHTING IN
Try the figures I gave you above, I'll bet they are awful close. With the figure's Winchester gave you, you have a 100 yd zero and50 fps more velocity, that won't make much difference over 300 yds.
The price of that ammo, I sure hope you have a lot of money or are taking up reloading! 30-06 ammo cost's about 1/4 the price and kill's animals only a bit less dead. I hadn't realized that stuff cost that much! If you can find someone with a cronograph, you'll probally find out the vevocity Winchester gives is not quite right. To many different thing's effecting it. |
RE: SIGHTING IN
Well the general consensus is an inch to an inch and half and some even say that if you have a magnum caliber that your zero at 100 will be the same at 200. From what I've witnessed a 300 Win Mag do zeroed at 100 yard shooting range do to a doe at 210 yards was about 3 inches below the heart with a well aimed shot from an extremely accurate rifle.
