RE: Does bad genetics prevent big racks
I have never heard of a deer living 10 years. Maybe thats just me. Genetics play a big role as well as proteins. There will always be scrag bucks in a herd because not all does are "stuck" by a big buck. I have heard that deer peak around 5 then decrease with age!

RE: Does bad genetics prevent big racks
The biggest deer I've seen are the ones with dark brown racks, which indicates old age. It is hard to believe that these deer are only five years old or that they had bigger racks earlier in their life and are now on the decrease.

RE: Does bad genetics prevent big racks
Rack color really has no bearing on age.

RE: Does bad genetics prevent big racks
well it depends some times bad genetics will lead to big ugly racks and sometimes i think that they will stay small. o yea andrewjoseph i think i have some deer on the wall that would kill you if you saw them they are so messed up. on has 1 on one side and 4 on the other, one has 3 right ou of his head on one side and one circled antler on the other. They are weird.

RE: Does bad genetics prevent big racks
color has nothing to do with age.. the color of the rack is determined by how long the buck as velvet. if they scratch the velvet off early=white rack... they scratch it off late= dark rack
