gun season, hunt in a tree stand or on the ground
 

This is my first year hunting shut gun in ohio. I been bow hunting for two years. I was wondering what is more safer for gun hunting, in a tree stand or on the ground. I know gun season brings out some non educated hunters and dont pay attention to whats beyond there tarket thats why im asking. The good thing about it is where im going in ohio its 19,050 acres so i hope hunters wont be close togeter. Thanks James

I would say a well made ladder stand or climber would probably be more apt to be out of the line of fire for the majority of shots. Wearing plenty of hunters orange should be your main priority.

3 reasons to be in a tree stand.

You're less likely to get shot.

You're less likely to shoot someone else.

You're more likely to shoot a deer. Deer seldom look up so your chances are better and your scent is often carried away up high.

Just don't fall out of the treestand .Or you will end up getting shot with painkiller . I have seen some times I wished I was away from all the hunters maybe the treestand would help .

up in a stand. especially if you are on public lands. if you've ever been to southern ohio during gun season it sounds like WWII. most guys will shot anything that moves and there are never enough game officers to make sure guys are safe and legal. remember this &quot;IF YOU THINKS IT'S A DEER IT ISN'T. I usually go three-four hours to start in a tree stand,then down to the ground due to getting cold. If I hear alot of shots going off I head home, I take no chances when the idiots are out. The last three years have been fruitful having taken two decent bucks and a nice sized doe by 8 am.

Depending on the area in Ohio I'm hunting I prefer my portable tree stand. But I've also killed some nice bucks off the ground as well. The main thing is wear plenty of orange, a flashlight if in the woods early or out late. Be a defensive hunter much like a defensive driver(watch out for the other hunter who may have no hunting ethics or common woodsmanship. Good Luck Boss!

Sorry to disagree, but I usually do. <img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle> I don't know much about Ohio, but if it's hilly at all, I think the ground is safer! If the ground is perfectly flat, all the shooting is along the ground. But, I doubt that is the case. If you are in a tree in hilly country, you WILL be in the line of someone's fire. I would rather be on the ground where I can quickly put a tree between me and an idiot shooting my direction. In the hills of Northeast Iowa where I used to gun hunt, I sat on a limestone outcropping that had a seven foot long, two foot deep &quot;foxhole&quot; in it. More than once when things got scarey, I rolled into that hole. Jim
