RE: What is the biggest mistake deerhunters....
Over-hunting a stand, hands down. I do it every year.
|
RE: What is the biggest mistake deerhunters....
not scouting and hanging any stands
|
RE: What is the biggest mistake deerhunters....
Lack of scent control!
|
RE: What is the biggest mistake deerhunters....
I would say number one hands down is buck/doe fever! Alot of guys do everything right, only to blow it right as they take the shot! Number two is not scouting enough to be set up right. Number three would be not knowing your equipment well enough to be proficient with it!
|
RE: What is the biggest mistake deerhunters....
Not knowing their deer.
|
RE: What is the biggest mistake deerhunters....
not taking a lot of time to aim or taking a bad shot
|
RE: What is the biggest mistake deerhunters....
Underestimating the deer's ability to smell you!

RE: What is the biggest mistake deerhunters....
Getting busted by the deer's nose.

RE: What is the biggest mistake deerhunters....
[/align]I think the number one is stand placement,It's not the best spot because it's not possible to get in or out without educating the deer,it's too close or too far from the trail,it's not positioned for shooting,it's not high or low enough,it's not trimmedfor shooting,it's in a place were the deer are after or befor shootinghours,it's were the wind eddys,it's to exposed.Anyone of these things not taken into consiteration and you will be wasting your time' and there are a lot of people out there wasting there time. |
RE: What is the biggest mistake deerhunters....
Watch how manyposts you see this upcoming year about people hanging stands in September and October. I prefer hanging stands now based on the past season(to a point). I understand that some will be getting new pieces of land to hunt or their woods may change (i.e.cutover, agriculture field planted in cotton, poor acorn drop, etc). But for those of us hunting the same pieces of land over and over again with little change now is the time to get in there cut some trails, hang some stands, disturb the woods. I still have my climbers and groundblinds if I need to adjust to the deer during the season because of food, hunting pressure, or the rut but other than that I want to get my stuff set up between now and spring and then stay out. I may do a little low impact scouting as the season approaches butvery little asI don't want to educate the deer at all. Even in the beginning of the season I prefer to hunt low impact stands that are easy to get to and not too deep in the woods, like powerline right of ways, old fire lanes, creek bottoms near fields, and other stands I can see a lot of ground from(I call them recon stands). I save my deeper stands(ones closer to bedding areas)for November/December when I am expecting heavier activity from the rut. Anyway my answer to the question is poor prep. Not having enough stands, not knowing the wind you need, not thinking about how to slip in, overhunting stands and hunting stands at the wrong time, being afraid to try something new(I know guys that hunt the same stand the entire season, whether they kill a deer or not), and basically anything else half-a$$ that gives the deer the advantage. Over and out.

RE: What is the biggest mistake deerhunters....
I think its being impatient and "stand jumping". Not sittin in one stand but jumpin around from stand to stand.
|
RE: What is the biggest mistake deerhunters....
Lack of confidence in their ability to evaluate sign therefore causing stand jumping and lack of patience. Another one is not shooting their gun enough before season
|
RE: What is the biggest mistake deerhunters....
bad shot once one steps out
|
RE: What is the biggest mistake deerhunters....
i think its between not scouting enough, and making bad shots without proper followthrough
|
RE: What is the biggest mistake deerhunters....
Thinking all deer are deep in the woods. There are lots of deer in fence lines and ditches, next to urban areas.
|
RE: What is the biggest mistake deerhunters....
What JimmyS said.....plus underestimating the deers ability to see your slightest move IMO.
|
RE: What is the biggest mistake deerhunters....
What is the biggest mistake deer hunters make? |
RE: What is the biggest mistake deerhunters....
not spending enough time in the woods prior to hunting season, you need to scout the deer to see where they are coming from and what they are going to and why, and how they are getting there.
then you can figure out the best spot to hunt based on a deer's need's...cover, food&water, and the ladies.:) |
RE: What is the biggest mistake deerhunters....
Other than proper scouting (i.e. plenty of deer sign but it's from nighttime activity), I'd have to say is not checking the equipment. My rifle got off between regular rifle season and the late season rifle and it cost me at least three deer. I learned my lesson in my "dream season." Always check your gear to make sure everything is right and working properly. 5" at 50 yards cost me venison in the freezer.

RE: What is the biggest mistake deerhunters....
Doing something dumb or unethical because of pier preasure
dd |
RE: What is the biggest mistake deerhunters....
Above all else, I would say poor prep work before going into the field to hunt. Generally not knowing what your deer are doing before trying to hunt them.
|
RE: What is the biggest mistake deerhunters....
I dont think playing the wind is possible... If you sit around a fire for a couple of hours you will notice the wind (watch the smoke) will change directions too many times to keep up with. Some mistakes ive made is not wearing a safety harness in a stand( No Biggy), Not plugging a shotgun when your supposed to ( sorry game wardens, Ill make sure i do;)), Shot a deer with a shotgun thats not sighted in completly( Hit it in the head at 75 yards after 5 shots aiming at the lungs:D) Im sure there is a few others if i think about it but i have to run to the little boys room for a quick drop off of the kids!!!!
|
RE: What is the biggest mistake deerhunters....
Not staying in your stand.or oversleeping and getting in it too late. You chose that spot for a reasion, stay with the plan man!
|
RE: What is the biggest mistake deerhunters....
not scouting enough to know where the best places are.
|
RE: What is the biggest mistake deerhunters....
Well i thinkt that the one thing that i did that was my biggest mistake is sleeping in my stand and not going to the bathroom befor i go out.
|
RE: What is the biggest mistake deerhunters....
You mind is what misses with you the most you alwas wonder if there is a deer over there or further in the woods
so you relocate and falling a sleep |
RE: What is the biggest mistake deerhunters....
Notspending enough time on stand. Hours on stand = deer seen, shot opps. ;)
|
RE: What is the biggest mistake deerhunters....
I like big fat bucks, so I do post-season scouting and apply all of my new knowledge, usually from mistakes, and discover their escape routes and secondary trails and etc...
Prepares me for the next season. * Take Notes During The Season* |
RE: What is the biggest mistake deerhunters....
Biggest mistakes I see bowhunters make is 1) taking too longor bad angle shots 2) using too light of an arrow & whimpy/light mecanichal heads because they wanna gain a few FPS. 3) improperly tuned bow. Scouting & scent control is useless if you cant kill em when they come.
|
RE: What is the biggest mistake deerhunters....
Thinking about the shot too much. Once you see it's a deer you want toput on the crosshairs and take the shot. Don't let your brain make it harder than it is.
|
RE: What is the biggest mistake deerhunters....
I find it amusing that about 1/2 the responses have something to do with a stand. I've never used a stand or a blind forhunting deer, so I guess that means I have 1/2 thechance of making a mistake!
|
RE: What is the biggest mistake deerhunters....
Not knowing your rifle well enough, Not practicing enough at the range, Not taking time to rezero your scope for the new season, Not learning how to walk through the woods without alarming every critter in sight, Not taking the wind into consideration, Nottracking nor scouting before the hunt, Not caring about BO and drinking to much Fire Water the night before the hunt.:)
