RE: Can a deer feel pain like a human?
I doubt if anybody actually knows the answer to your question. I have read somewhere that a deer and other animals do not have the same type of nerve system as a human, but I honestly don't know.

RE: Can a deer feel pain like a human?
if i was to guess i would say "no"....and the reason is this. have you ever suprised yourself and cut your hand and didn't even know you were cut until you actually saw blood. only after you visually see the cut does it seem that you associate it w/pain. your mind plays a great part in acknowledging pain w/a particular incident and since deer don't have the congnaitve skills required to relate incidents with pain then i would say "no" deer don't feel pain the way we feel pain.

RE: Can a deer feel pain like a human?
I read something on this related to african game. The answere is no, deer don't feel pain the way we do. The reason for this is that we have a much more complex nervous system than we do. Our metabolisms or very different too. When some african tribes hunt small game, they use regular old darts or arrows. And they work fine. But if they are hunting monkeys, they have to use poison tipped arrows and darts because the monkey's nervous system is wired differently that other small game. A deer has thicker skin, more solid bone, and is more sturdy than a human frame is. It would only make sence that they would be a little tougher than we are too. Maybe we have an expert here that can elaborate on this more.

Im with nodose on this one, the deer just feels a thump and hears a loud bang and runs like satan himself is chasing it. And just because you tracked for 45 min dosent mean the deer took that long to die, if you made a good shoulder shot as you say he didnt suffer so dont worry about it and keep on hunting as long as you feel like you want. There some people who just cant kill something else intentionaly. My grandpa couldnt be he was just as happy as ever for me when i got a deer. So dont feel guilty.

RE: Can a deer feel pain like a human?
I would have to disagree. If deer didn't feel pain then we wouldn't see them limping. Dogs for sure feel pain and deer are no different than any other animal. I think we would like to think that they don't but in reality I'm sure they feel quite a bit. I have heard does bellow from being wounded and to me that suggests they feel pain.

RE: Can a deer feel pain like a human?
Well, it all depends on what size gun you use. A 22 cal. probably hurts like a sumomabitch, but on the other hand a 7 mag. just feels like a slight sting.

RE: Can a deer feel pain like a human?
Of course they feel pain. That's how any animal or human knows when to get away from something. They might not have as acute a nervous system as we do but I guarantee you they feel it when they get shot, get into a fight with another deer and get gouged, or anything else they do to themselvs in the course of their lives. Does a dog yelp when you step on it's foot or tail? of course it does. Keep this in mind though, they feel alot less pain then cows and pigs do when they get led into a gait to get their throats cut and bleed to death. Deer also get to live their lives the way they want instead of living in a pen for no other reason but to feed us. Don't let it discourage you though, if we didn't hunt them they would eventually over populate and starve to death. I got a little political here but I wanted to put it in a little perspective.

RE: Can a deer feel pain like a human?
this kind of post could ruin a kid from hunting..y think about it? if you are a hunter and decided u can take an animal thats great...go out and when the opprotunity arrises take a good clean shot and make sure you do all you can to make a human quick kill...if you are worried about deer feeling pain dont hunt becuase i doubt anyone knows for 100%sure what deer feel or see or taste or smell or anything unless you are a deer and to my knowledge they havent found a talking one yet!

RE: Can a deer feel pain like a human?
Of course it would have to feel some pain. Have you ever heard/seen one bawling/screaming after its been shot? I have. It brings a whole new meaning to the way you think about hunting. I know the 2 deer i have seen bawling were in pain, no amount of "facts" would ever prove different to me.

RE: Can a deer feel pain like a human?
I believe the question was not "do deer feel pain" it was "do deer feel pain the same way we do". Yes, all animals feel pain. If they didn't, they wouldn't care about getting hurt. But deer and other animals do not feel the pain the SAME WAY we do.

RE: Can a deer feel pain like a human?
Yes, they can feel pain, but just like humans a mortal wound will put them in shock, a state where they are dizzy, confused, and not feeling much at all. This is why its important to only take high percentage shots. Hit them in the vitals with an appropriate gun and it will be an ethical harvest, shoot their jaw off so they starve to death and they will die a horrible death. If you know and stay within your and your guns limitations you have nothing to be ashamed of, if you shoot at all brown you see or take long shots with a shotgun you have no business being in the woods.

RE: Can a deer feel pain like a human?
First I have to say this, if you are just starting to hunt, make sure of your Target and shot, you may have a deer get away because you couldn't get a clear shot, but it's better to get away unharmed, then to have a slug in his gut or some where that will let him run and die somewhere that you can't find him.
I would say yes, maybe their bodies aren't made to cry and feel sorry for themselves like a human does when they get hurt, but I do know that my dog seems like he is crying when he is in pain. I work the mid to 8 shift and have been watching some bucks around the property all fall- two in perticular, both 8 pointers. last week on my day off one of them got his horns all tangled up in some rope that was along one of the roads like a temporary fence to keep people from driving on the new seed, i guess the more he fought, the more he got wrapped up until his legs were tied up also and he ended up on his side with his head in a shallow stream. The guy that was working for me was too scared and not physicaly able to help the deer get loose so he stopped a oil burner serviceman that he knew to cut enough rope off so that the deer got up and took off. I spoke with the man the cut the buck loose and he said that the deer acted like he trying to drown himself in the stream to get it over with. I wish the guy had called me so i could snap a quick picture before it was cut loose, maybe they would stop useing these ropes in the fall. This is the third buck in two yrs. they said that the deer still had some rope on him as he ran away. RE: Can a deer feel pain like a human?
I don't think anyone or anything feels pain the same way. Yes deer do feel pain but they are an animal and there tolerance to pain is probably higher than that of a human. If you've ever heard them cry after they've been hit or broke a leg or something to this nature you would know they were in pain.

RE: Can a deer feel pain like a human?
Of course they feel pain. Pain is a protective sensation so that the creature can avoid further damage if possible. If you lay your hand on a hot burner the pain causes you to jerk away before further burning occurs. If you have a broken limb pain causes you to protect it.
Having said that, wild animals are a lot tougher than us. They live there whole lives exposed to the elements, fighting to survive. That alone would make them more tolerent of pain without considering phyical traits like the nervous system. Think on this, there are very few quiet, peaceful deaths in the wild. Animals starve, freeze to death, are ripped apart and eaten by other animals. Its my way of thinking that a well placed bullet is one of the quickest and cleanest deaths a wild animal could expect. |

RE: Can a deer feel pain like a human?
I agree with the majority here. But the main concern when taking a shot is to make sure it is a good one, that way they don't feel it very long. A main thing that you need to look at is the adrenaline rush that they will get when hit. I've experienced it myself that if you hurt your self, you won't feel it for a while, kinda, "you'll feel it in the morning" ideas. You smash you finger, cut your self, or things like that, you don't feel it right away. I cut my face pretty decent one time, and didn't know it till someone told me I was bleeding. If you make a good, clean shot, the deer will go down before it feels much pain at all.

RE: Can a deer feel pain like a human?
It should also be remembered that when trying to understand an animal's pain from a human perspective that a deer or any other animal has no sense of time or future events. Its not like a deer
understands that he is going to die or that he is going to be permanently injured and the animals around them don't know it either. Pain for human means having the ability or curse to imagine the future and know that it will continue and thus changes the entire concept. Imagine root canal or the worst possible toothache you can imagine and realize animals exist with pains much worse( teeth, parasites) without any alteration to their general behavior. The problem for humans is that they know that pain will keep going on and on and that is the real problem and why humans can suffer unlike any other creature and shouldn't even be compared. Still, only an absolute sicko/atheist would do anything but their best to insure a humane kill since only such persons would have no motive to do so. |
RE: Can a deer feel pain like a human?
I agree, please make the kill as humane as possible. Try to make it as painless as possible for both you and especially the deer!
