yea whats wrong with the .270??

The .270 is about as perfect as you can get, unless you want a little more oomph and go with the .30-06.

Not to mention that ammo for the .270 is never in short supply pretty much anywhere you go.

Personally i would go with the Barett 50 cal semi auto for the deer hunting it can also be used as a crossover small game rifle[8D]

As is with the 30-06, never a shortage, you can find it EVERYWHERE!

The .270 is a great caliber for deer, and can be used on larger game if you ever get the opportunity.

The .257 Weatherby is expensive to shoot, ammo is hard to find, and most production rifles will realize no advantage over a .25-06.

I promise you the deer or whateverwill not know the difference...Its your money so get what you like. I hunt with what I have listed below and dropped every deer where they stood with the first shot; and it didn't do any more damage to the meatthan a .270. Guns can be an exspensive investment so get what you will be happy with, no need to follow what every one else has. Find something you like.

A .270 with agood quality scopeand bonded bullets. You won't find a better combination.

RE: whats a good deer caliber?

Get a 30.06. It is probably the most versatile gun you'll find, and it can take any deer just as well as any other caliber.

Don't look back...

I have a choice of weapons to use for Deer but somehow I ALWAYS grab my .270 Ruger M77 Carbinewhen my arm enters the gunsafe. I said it before and I'll say it again "My .270 has a proven record whyuse any other Weapon"

you've already got the perfect caliber. Theres not a deer on this planet that the 270 wont put in the freezer if you do you're part.

my 270 drops em like a rock..i dropped 10 deer in their tracks with one shot...i found the federal fusion bonded bullets do a really good job....

Depending on how you look at it, it is way too big! .177 pellet gun is what you need! On the other hand, anything less than .50 BMG is too small!:D:D
Seriously, it is all you'll ever need, and if I just had to have another rifle (which we all need) it wouldn't be a .257 Weatherby!

Doe Dumper 12-11-2006 02:33 PM

RE: whats a good deer caliber?

I say go with a 460 Weatherby or 375 RUM. Never know when they might get back up and come after ya! No such thing as overkill ya know!! :D

RE: whats a good deer caliber?

Statistically.30-30 rifles have killed more deer than any other rifle, followed by the .270 and .300 (due to the popularity and lower prices), however like I said it is your money get what you like, depending on your shooting skills just about anything will work.

I vote for the 30-06.

To me a good deer caliber is anything bigger then a 22cal. Its mainly all in shot placement.

Do the new federal Fusions have a live deer spine sensor?:D

RE: whats a good deer caliber?

.308 seems to do the job for me....one of the most accurate calibers hands down and doesnt kick too bad. I would go with at least a 30 caliber so you dont have to spend too much time looking for one you didnt hit good. I think the snipers use .308 and .223's. Just my two cents, but everyone has a favorite rifle. If you hit em right it doesnt matter. I say save your money and get a bow since you already have a 270. you will get addicted to bow hunting and sell your rifle.

.270, .25-06, 30-06, .308, 7mm-08, .243, 6mmRem, .280Rem, 7mm mag, .300 win mag, .257 Roberts, .240 Wby, 250-3000, .444, .45-70, 30-30, .35 Whelen, 6.5 x 57 mauser, .264 win, 7-30 waters, .35 Rem,
there's about 1% of the good whitetail rounds out there without getting into the short mags, bigger magnums and all the wildcats out there... the one you own now will do everything you could ever ask of it inside 500yds, provided you are using a quality bullet and have good optics on your rifle.

RE: whats a good deer caliber?

I'm sorry......all those guys are trying to lead astray.

What you need is a great gun. One that's easy to kill with.

There's this one very light recoil round, it called the .458 Lott, it's a great gun for kids.:DShot one when I was two. (Just Kidding in a very corny way.)

Really, stick with your .270, it's good.

If you want to die,try to fire 60 rounds through a .460 Weatherby.(I think there's such a thing.)

270 is a good deer gun. Shoot a 30-06 here

bhensley 12-12-2006 08:27 PM

RE: whats a good deer caliber?

Any of the guns mentioned above will do the job, atleast the ones mentioned seriously. But there is no reason to put up the .270 to get another gun just to shoot deer with. Just my thoughts on it.
