Tragic Accident

A guy who lived about 40 miles from here was killed in his treestand last week when he slipped.... He had a safety harness on, but the weight of his body was too much for his lungs. He hung upside down for at least 6 hours, and died from not being able to breathe. Sad :(

Good example of why treestand users should use FULL BODY harnesses. The single belt types, even when worn around the chest are deadly if you can't quickly get yourself righted. If he was found upside down then he probobly had the harness around his stomach which will prevent your diaphram from being able to move.

Of course this is an unfortunate tragedy, but we should all try to learn from this.

I messed up a few years ago with a single. I was shocked how quickly you run out of breath. I now wear a full body harness but if your not careful you can hang yourself with those. Got to watch where the rope is.

Believe it or not even in a FULL body harness you can hang for about 15 minutes before your internal organs start to break down. This is due to the inability to get blood flow to your extremities. Most commonly your legs. And soon after the 15 minute mark your bodys interal organs will begin to break down. You dont have long to hang before things can become very serious after that 15 minute mark. Always bring a knife so you can cut yourself loose and land on your feet.

In my hunter's safety course they taught us that you never wear the harness around your gut. Always around the chest.

Sorry to hear this,i personally dont wear a harness when i go hunting, its kinda a choice, would you rather hit the ground and maybe spring a bone,or kinda like you said have a chance at hanging upside down at death(treestands, climbers)

Now days i just hunt from a box blind that we build,

There pretty neat in the inside, you can fix them up very nice, with shelves etc inside.

Only retarded thing about blinds is that you have to wear a hunter orange vest inside a blind!!!! They should make a law that allows someone to hunt in a blind without orange vests on, but they should pass a law that says there must be orange on the blind. That's what will work.
