If I didn't have a weapon? Woah. Thats a scary thought. It's not legal to carry here, but I always have a knife with a 4"+ blade straped to my waist. And a back-up in my pocket.
But seriously I don't think there is much you can do except get hurt...bad.
Guns cause crime, like flies cause garbage.

CRC
From what I can remember while hunting in Arizona, many years ago, the cougar grabs with it’s front claws, and shreds you with its powerful hind leg claws. It will go for the throat with it’s fangs when it is sure of the kill.
As told to me when I asked a similar question, “try to shove something down its throat as hard as possible, spin around keeping free of its hind legs, and rip the front claws out of your shoulders. When he hits the ground gagging jump on his rib cage with your knees and try to crush the ribs to suffocate and or immobilize the creature. If you have nothing to shove down it’s throat make a fist and use your arm.” The thought being that it is better to loose an arm than a life.
But, just to make sure, walk between two other hunters!

Everything that i've seen or read said that you need to shove sticks or what ever you can get your hands on down its throat. You would definatly want to fight back. When big cats attack its for one reason and thats to get dinner. They're not like a bear that will attack to defend its young or territory. I'm not saying that a bear won't eat a human but 9 times out of 10 they are just showing who's boss.
