people are no smarter in some ways than deer. think about this, in a war like iraq or anywhere for that matter. if someone in your family got shot, would you haul azz and never look back or immediately try to help the injured one? i for one would try to help my family. i know a deer isn't going to try and drag his family member off that has just been shot BUT does that make people any smarter trying to help their own in a dangerous situation?

p.s. i know some people will respond to this as no i wouldn't help my family out until the danger was clear and in return i will throw the BS flag out. if you were walking down the street with your mother or child and they were shot...you wouldn't think about yourself.

Death is natural in nature. Deer die via other predators than man and as well via natural causes, so I really don't think it bothers them too much. The bigger issue would be your scent at the site vs the dead deer's. I have shot deer from the ground blind orgood coverand had the others not even leave, if they don't sense where the danger is they seem more unlikely to bolt. I have also seen them sniff the dead animal as well.

Elk are really smart...I think.

They're smart enough not to bugle anymore, and hence the issue of over bugling. Because they figure out that it's hunters that are bugling, not elk, it's really bad too, 'cause now they aren't mating as much anymore...I think.

Yea, I think bucks are easier to spook than does. I was with my dad hunting one time, and we finally saw some does after a few hours. My dad shot a solo doe and about 2 minutes later we saw 5 more come down the same path. The gun shot echoed and they could not tell where it came from, they just got on the move twords us almost tripping on the dead deer we had just shot.

Another time, a friend and I were smoking cigarettes and talking loud and laughing...not really hunting seriously, and along came a fat doe. We had to put cigarettes down and shut up to shoot

Elk populations in most parts of NA are enjoying a boom now so I don't think they aren't mating any less now. The increased opportunity means more pressure and eductated animals to plastic but plenty of guys get them going each fall and harvest them with aid of calls. It takes more planning, effort, better setupsandknowledge beyondlistening to the Call DVD a couple of times then going out andblowing your lips off.;)

PS they are still talking as well. In our area the increased cow population has made for a less defined rut(IMHO) but they are still vocal and can be made to answer. Will they come trotting out in the wide open just because i am calling to them probably not but that is where the more & better part come in.
