TV hunting shows.

Has anyone ever noticed that all of the hunting shows on regular cable TV are on Saturday and Sunday mornings. That is theonly time that some people get to hunt. I wonder why they put these shows on while most of us are in the woods and do not get to watch them.

I know that you can purchase the outdoor channel but a poor college student like myself can't afford it. I just wish they would put more shows on TV.

Sometimes I think they do more harm than good for our sport. And MOST of them are very unrealistic.

Most of the hunting shows just make ya jealous anyway, no matter where they go, they shoot monsters. they aren't realistic at all!!! but i guess they are still fun to watch!!

I was talking about this to a cousin last night. I hate those those shows because it's 25 minutes of whispering saying how far away the animal is, 15 seconds of aiming and a shot, then 4 minutes and 45 seconds talking about how good it feels.

So what?

RE: TV hunting shows.

If I could just see big bucks walking though the brush without all the idiot stuff, that would be enough for me. That's about the only reason I ever watch any of them.

I did see one show the other night where a guy was being led around by a guy on a Texas Ranch. He told about seeing a big buck that regularly came in to a dug pond. They sat there and sure enough a really good buck came in. He was shootingsome fancy muzzleloader and when the buck came in he said it was 70 yards. He took careful aim and shot. Then he said "I got him! He's hit hard!He's going down!" as the buck looked around and trotted off. After they looked around for a while, they decided it was a clean miss. That is just embarassing. I can't believe they put it on the air. A while later the guide spotted him another buck that had a crappy messed up rack and he shot it. Then he talked about the "charactor" the rack had and they noticed the deer was injured in the hind quarter and the deer'sfoot was messed up.

That show was called WHITETAIL REVOLUTION! That's my favorite hunting show. I'm sorry but I love to watch it! I love to see big bucks. Don't have any bucks where I live cause everyone shoots even the smallest of bucks. I think it should be a law that you can't shoot a buck unless it has 5 points or more. Give the bucks a chance to grow. I also think that they should give out more doe tags and ALOT less buck tags.

I agree... I am really losing my patience with some of those hunting shows. [:'(] I actually got so ticked off, I recorded one of them, then carefully went back and reviewed it. The results will blow your mind!

Opening of show with theme music
Thanks (with ads) to sponsors

{commercial}
Show talks of deer and how hard can be to successfully hunt one (you're filming at a game ranch you idiot! [:@])
Talk about scouting and patterning deer (again your filming at a game ranch - everything was done for you! [:@])
Wispering.... more wispering.... a buck comes into view.

Show comes back on with the "hunter" aiming his TC Encore while the guide and cameraman wait patiently.
Pause.
Pause.
{take the shot already! Geez.... :eek:}
The shows' "hunter" takes the shot, the deer limps off, the hunter and guide high five each other.
{commercial}
{commercial}
{commercial}

{commercial}
Show comes back on with a replay of the deer and the shot. Then they show the "hunter" coming up to his downed deer, but yet the cameraman is on the opposite side. :eek:
"Hunter" shakes hands with guide, crew, anyone who's on the set....
Show ends with ending credits and list of sponsors and the outfitters name/website/phone number/etc...

Geez.... A 30 minute hunting show. When you sum this all up (like I actually did) you get roughly 8 minutes of actual hunting. All the rest is mindless commercials and sponsor ads and junk.

Butch that was the best description that could be told bar none. I really like it when they laugh and carry on after the kill. Or wisper like the dont want the dead animal to hear them. Not my idea of a true hunter.JMO

i agree with you totally. i used to love hunting shows as a kid, but now they are just boring to watch. now days i record them so i can fast forward them till the hunting. i can watch a morning of shows(roughly 4 or 5 hours) in about an hour to an hour and half. and the last time i checked, if you wisper "there is a huge buck 25 yards from my stand, i think im gonna take him." and then proceeded to turn back around draw your bow and say "you on him." to your camera man, the deer would be at about 125 yards at a full sprint away from you. that there tells you something.

I saw one today where the guy passed on a beautiful 8-pt. and then later shot a weird looking buck that had good mass but an ugly rack. I thought the one he passed was better than the one he shot.

I'm glad there are hunting shows on TV. Compared to the garbage that now passes in primetime TV, I'll watch a deer hunting show anyday. I record anything that I'm interested in and watch it, fast forwarding through the commercials. My favorite shows are:

1. Spirit of the Wild
2. Wildlife Obsession
3. Gettin' Close
4. Roger Raglin Outdoors
5. North American Whitetail

For the people who don't like the shows, Would you prefer no hunting at all on TV? These shows aren't perfect, but they do give hunting some exposure. Hell, because of these shows I decided that I wanted to bowhunt.

The best hunting show on tv is Deer and Deer Hunting in my opinion. Not alot of hunting ,but information and ideas helpful to hunting whitetails. Great Magazine too. Other than that it's the same ole same ole.

I love the hunting shows! Especially Drury Dream Season and Realtree Roadtrips. Wildlife obsession is good stuff too. I just wish they'd come out with more of this stuff,really enjoy it on the boring days at school...

Gotta agree with most of you....
These hunting shows suck!!!!!
They are boring...Not much in the way hunting,
Way..too many commercials.....[:'(]
And the thing is, you can put just about anybody
on this forum in the same boots as the hosts of these programsand they'd do just as well, and some memberswould put them out of a job...
When you hunt 260 plus days a year, your are going to be successfulin(or least attempting to) harvesting a world class animal...
I personally like the Big Buck,Elk Moosde etc.video footage ...
Not the hunts,but just the footage of the animals roaming around in there range......

I like Deer and Deer Hunting as well, but the best one has to be Get Wild with Cindy Garrison for her..... uh ......informative appearance............:)

YEA BUDDY!! you got that right Timber.I alwayse miss the part where she shows us how to properly field dress a big old buck,then hoist it,skin it, and debone it. A hottie like that- doing all of that,could have me buying her roses.On the other hand,she would probobly eat the roses.

I watch Getting Close every week. I think it is more entertaining than most hunting shows. It's not just yourboring "lets whisper for28 minutesthen shoot a deer" show. They add some funny stuff. And Tiffany, Smokin Hot! I record all the episodes on my DVR and have watched the one where they bow fished for flying carp several times. Thats so coolhow they shoot them in mid-air. Not to mention that Tiffany is in a bikini top.[:-];)

I for one love the hunting shows. I like seeing deer and its even better when their big. It definitely gets me pumped up before season hits.

For those of you who complain that theyre hunting behind fences and on ranches, I ask you this. Would anyone enjoy watching 8 hours of some guy sitting in a deer stand, pissing in a bottle, watching 3-4 deer go by and maybe a squirrel. And after 2 weeks of that he finally kills a big buck. BORINGGGG!! Theyre tv shows an theyre meant to entertain, let them and quit picking them apart.

I agree with this statement completely. I watched a show the other week where they never told you they were on a game ranch. Different laws must be in effect since they where hunting with rifles (during Michigan's bow season) and they were only wearing orange baseball hats (law says 50% or more of your body must be orange when firearm hunting). One-third of their camera footage was the "hunters" riding their auto transmission, 4x4 quads to the base of their stands on paved or prepared paths. That's real hunting?!?!

Another show had 2 guys in jeans and t-shirts walk 50 yds. from their vehicle, stood in a single spot blasting doves for some amount of time, then walk back to the vehicle talking about how good the hunting was. They never showed that they retrieved the birds leading anyone (including me) to believethat they never harvested them. It shows hunters to be lazy, wasteful and only out for the thrill of the kill!

A third had a "hunting expert and activist" on supporting the bill to allow dove hunting(which was defeated in Nov.). His platform to support the bill was that they are a migratory bird and other states do it, so we should too. If you want to win over the hearts and minds of voters, you need to provide sound reasoning and numbers, notget some idiot to ramble in front of a camera.

Some shows are good,most do more harm.

Like most folks here have stated, 20 minutes of commercials and roughly 10 minutes of actual hunting time.Seems that if you don`t use the products they are hawking, you just won`thave a successful hunt. Remember those old guys wearing jeans and an old red checkered jackshirt, usually using an even older Mod 94? They seemed to have pretty good luck without all the fancymodern amenities. Always seemed to be a lot colder then too.
