RE: Do you shoot at running deer? check out this video
I feel like I owe it to the animal to take it in as a humane a way as possible. I'm a good shot, but there are too many variables when its running. There are enough deer around here there really isn't a need to take a bad shot.

Not with a bow, but will with a gun, damn right I do!! I shoot at flying birds with my shotgun too!!!
You must, however, practice shooting at moving targets!!! I've shot my .22 at more clay targets than I have my shotgun!!! That's how my dad taught me to shoot!! I've literally shot thousands of clays with my shotgun and even more with my .22!! It's been awhile since I've shot at clays, but I'm pretty confident, and know my abilities!!! It has been a long time since my first shot was at a moving deer, but I usually don't stop shooting until the deer is down or out of sight!!! Last years deer I shot at 5 times!2 in lung and heart area, 1 in theliver and 1 right behind the liver! The fifth shot must havehit a tree! LOL Anyway, if you do shoot at moving prey!! Make sure you practice, practice, practice! |

If it's in the woods and a 100yrds away, doubt it.50 or closer with see thru mounts diffently. In a open field, diffenly.I think many put to much lead on a deer running is why they miss alot.I aim right for the vitals and keep following thru after the shot. That bullet is there right now and is goanna hit the target. That bullet is there in a thousands of a second. No lead needed if you follow thru on the shot. Many deer I have takin on the run when drivers push them from the woods thru a field.Very exciting at the least for that kind of shooting. It gets a bit boring just shooting deer standing still.Anyone can do that.I enjoy a challenge once in a while all so.

I grew up shooting at running deer during the shotgun season, deer drives are pretty standard practice around here during that season and as a result the deer were always running. We lost very few crippled deer, Ive seen as many not recovered after a standing shot since then by various bow and gun hunters from stands.
Generally if you were set up right it was a close shot, 30,40, maybe 50 yrds at a deer that was running broadside to you.Shooting at a deers ass or head on shots were never practiced.Long range shots werent needed.I dont shotgun hunt anymore and dont try running shots at deer with my muzzleloader because you cant get a fast follow up shot if you need it.If one did happen to get crippled its wide open farm country around here for the most part and 90% of the people farming the ground around here dont care if you shoot deer, finding andrecovering a cripple was never a problem.Under the right circumstances at a close deer I would still feel comfortable taking the shot. |

Iagree with petasux.I live in central minnesota where shotguns with rifled slugs are the only firearm besides muzzleloaders allowed. Drives are just part of the game when hunting deer up here. When you have a group of guys who know the land, how to perform a drive, and how to shoot moving targets, there is no problem with shooting at running deer. After allif you hunt waterfowl or upland game you shoot at moving targets(granted its with bird shot). The day i start shooting at ducks, geese, and pheasants only when they are standing still is the day i stop shooting at running deer. However I do not believe that raod hunting is even hunting at all. The people who road hunt are those who are either to afraid to ask for permission, or are to stupid to put in the time to pattern deer and putup a stand. Basically the moral of the storyis, either do you homework and still hunt, or practice until you are sick of seeing flying orange discs.

That would be a negative. I owe it to the animal to make a quick and humanekill. Too mauch of a chance of wounding one. Not for me.

Yes i shoot at running deer, there is two reasons why a. is because they might be in front of our dogs and b. is because i am competent enough with my shooting and i know i will be able to hit them.

ORIGINAL: Hiawatha ORIGINAL: SaskatchewanOutdoors road hunting is something that is part of SK hunting....its needed to locate rutting bucks....all SK hunters do it...unless you are outfitted in the forest way up north. To bad to hear about your misfortunes with slobbers....everyone has the right to use that 66 feet of road allowance... I think its very unfair for you to ASSUME a gun was loaded in the truck. |
