RE: I'm Back from Alberta
WOOOOOW!! Just stumbled on this thread, good read. Some serious, some funny s$%t. Sure adds truth to the adage " some days you get the bear, some days the bear gets you."
Dr. D, personally, I think you're getting to much crap over the thread, but with that said, l'll make a couple of observations. 1. Who are we to attack some one with " why would you want to spend money......yada yada. To each his own. Your money, do what you want with it. 2. Made big mistake after the first day not going in " nude " then changing at the stand. 3. U should have followed your instincts and DEMANDED to hunt the way your gut said, { new stand location } if allowed by law. 4500+ $$ gives you that say so. 4. Way to much back and forth with other posters. Sure to bring on the negativity, but in IMHO, you handled it with class. 5. Your right about width when scoring racks. Why should a rack be credited with air, and deducted for irregular? Frankly, I have a hard time imagining an outfitter conducting business the way this one did, with repeat clients, provided you were respectful to him and not an A$$. Not doubting your truthfullnes, just difficult to imagine. CROKIT |
RE: I'm Back from Alberta
Crokit thank you for your post ....anyone that reads the entire thred and was objective would have to come to the same conclusion you did ...in retrospect I suppose we (Glen and I) could have handled some things differently ...when we first arrived we were trated like family seeing as how this was our third trip ...but as the week went one Glen and I both were becoming less and less satisfied with the effort of our outfitter ...Glen is an attorney from North Carolina and about mid weekhe made his dissatisfaction known in no uncertain terms which may have set the tone for the rest of the hunt ..and in all honesty I said a few things to the outfitter myself such as wanting to move ...not seeing any game or fresh tracks ...so I am sure the outfitter was not real happy with us which may be partially the reason for the lack of effort we got ..so I think we may be to blame is a small way BUT that does not excuse the outiffter from not trying to get us in a better situation IMHO...

RE: I'm Back from Alberta
2ndday on the stand and you start shooting a decoy????????? How does an outfitter take care of such a client??
I have been on 7 Canadian bear hunts. On three of the hunts I have sat from 3 pm till dark(8:30 pm) 5 solid days in a row, motionless with black flies and mosquito's swarming my head net(before I learned about the thermacell) and never even saw a bear. That is why they call it hunting and not shooting. As an experienced hunter, Iaccept the fact that the game may not offer me a shot or that I may never see the game. To me that is one ofthe thrills about hunting; the unknown.I sure as a hell am not going to whine to my bear guide or get on a public forum and whine about not seeing a bear. Sniveling is not attractive on a grown man. I have a buddy that used to guide city slicker guys on Montana wilderness elk hunts. He quit guiding because of whiney clients like your type. TIGER, maybe video game hunts, like Cabelas big game hunts, would provide more pleasure for you.[8D] |

hey DD, i re-read this entire thread (over an hours worth of reading)....lol. how is the "civil" issue going? are you and Glen still pursuing this? keep me posted, on here or by pm/e mail.

RE: I'm Back from Alberta
C.C. the Outfitter offered us $1000.00 per as a refund ...Glen turned him down so I did to ...it wasent the money but the principal ...he obviously knew he was wrong by offering us a partial refund ....but thats been months ago and I just wrote it off as a lesson learned ...you know whats funny about this thread is that when I first posted it over a year ago I was not looking for others approval or pitty ...I posted it so others might learn from it ..not to make the same costly mistakes as we did .... funny how it got twisted.

I also just re-read your initial post. Sounds to me like your lazy tail is po'd because you finally put in a little work, and werent' rewarded with a treat. So you had to walk a little ways to your stand in a little snow, big deal. You didn't see 30 deer a day? Guess what, them's the breaks! Sure it sucks you didn't get a deer. But you are not headed to Timberghost Ranch, this is not a guarantee.

RE: I'm Back from Alberta
I have read most of this post but not all of it. But it seems reading between the lines my conclusion is you got screwed by the outfitter as many others do. They just one the fast dollar for little effort.
I am from Alberta and have outfitters in the area where my land is. I see them on a daily bases in the area it seems. I have had, run ins with one of them. He doesnt care if he trespasses, his hunters dont get picked up sometimes until an hour after dark when legal shooting is over 1/2 hr after sunset???? He gets mad when he sees hunters ongovt land and even got on my case when I was on govt land. I talked to one of his hunters from the USAwhen I came upon him on my land. I heard some good stories from him ( hunted with this outfitter for 3 years and said it was his last.) I brought ther hunter to one of my plots with a heated blindand said hunt here and only 150 or better or dont shoot lol.Well Jim(hunter) shot when I was at another plot about 1/2 mile away. I went back which was about one hour from the time I left him. He greeted me and was all smiles. He said he seen 5 bucks before he shot. I asked him where it was and he hadnt gone to it yet, he was still shaking. I walked with him and he took a 188 buck. The outfitter was mad I found out because the hunter moved and I caught him lol. Where he had the hunter was where the deer dont even funnel much. The outfitter was lucky I didnt lay charges against him for putting a hunter on my land. Of course the outfitter is still around and hasnt changed much. His day will come.lol. My advise is to get a reference of your outfitter and better yet find out the area your hunting. Ask him for a county map and call the locals in the area. Get the name and do a 411 search on internet. They will be happy to tell you their thoughs. |
RE: I'm Back from Alberta
I recently went on a bear hunt in Alberta, near Peace River, and there was so much game it was amazing. That being said the actual Outfitter did an amazing amount of leg work, driving for hours glassing properties and trying to find the best places to take his clients. The guides, on the other hand, had sections, some great, some not so great, but some were very good and some were not. Some guys worked thier butts off for their clients and some "drove the truck". The guy that did the bear hunts and I ran bear baits for 9 days. Up at 6 am until 1 or 2 and then I went to stand after eating and a shower, after hunting, we'd eat and BS til 1 am. I spent all of my times with the guides and outfitter, choosing not to spend too much time with the clients, I am a poor man and really had to work to pay for this hunt. I would do it again in a skinny minute.
DD I hate to hear that you had a crappy time, I hope to never spend that much money and have that kind of experience. |

I'm really having a hard time figuring out why you had such a bad time this go around and not the previous three times with the same outfitter? The only conclusion I can derive is that it would be because you didn't shoot a deer on this particular hunt.

Edit; Never mind. DD, you brought it upon yourself torun yourmouth in another thread I have in the off season, where I state thatI am tired of Harleys and want to buy a new custom prostreet chopper. Hi DD, Where in Alberta were you hunting? In the NW Alberta [Grand Praire region ]there was close to an 80% die off RE: accumulated 9' snow fall and spring tick infestations.Got this from a warden while looking for a bull moose this fall.We saw 4 moose in a week of hunting[no bulls]compared to the year before seeing 20. Fields that had over 100 deer in them at dusk had 1 or 2. Completely wiped out.The elk were not effected and my son shot a 3pt meat bull at 400 yards with his 25-06.Not making excuses for the outfitter but this is how weather and nature can effect hunting.I went on a 14 day guided hunt in the Yukon in 94 and I was teamed up with a "guide" who was also from Alberta and had never set foot in the Yukon before and we were sent into an area the outfitter had never hunted before.I found all this sh-t out later. My guide was scared of bears and was later fired when he wouldn't let a German hunter shoot a big boar!I live and hunt in Alberta but have witnessed first hand both good and bad outfitters in action.............Sorry things went badly but chalk it up to experiance...........Harold
