legally blind
Hey folks..need help. My wife teaches and one of her kids is legally blind. He knows that I am a hunting fool and asks her everyday if I will take him. I have personally told him I would. He wants to take his first deer and I don't blame him. The problem is I don't know how to "aim"for him. I thought I saw a scope mount that was off set for that purpose. If anyone has any solutions or a scope mount that would work please let me know. I really want to set a rifle up for this kid and help him get his first one. Thanks

RE: legally blind
How blind is legally blind? The reason I ask is I met a guy at the rifle range once who was legally blind, and using a 32x scope to drive tacks at 100 yds.

RE: legally blind
what i would do is i would get a scope with a stronger magnification. The back lens of the scope can be twisted in and out on all scopes. the purpose of this is for different eye sights. for people with bad eye sight you can back it out and it will make the crosshair more plain that way it wont be blurry on your target. if you adjust your scope to compensate his eyesight like this i think he will be just fine shooting through it. if the kid has glasses or contact just make sure he is wearing them when he shoots because i have legally blind friends without their glass but with them they have pretty good vision. hope this helps, im always willing to help and i would as well try my best to get him a deer. good luck.

RE: legally blind
He can just shoulder the gun and you can sit right behind him and aim the gun with the scope, help hold steady and tell him to squeeeeeze the trigger.

RE: legally blind
Thanks for all the comments. I guess we are going to try a few different things and find whats works
|
RE: legally blind
You also might try one of the groups that take handicapped people on special hunts, and find out how they do it for blind people! Good luck! It sounds like a great and noble cause!

RE: legally blind
P.S.
You probably already know this, but it is worth noting for safety's sake, DO NOT shoulder a scoped gun and allow him to get between it and you! In my younger days I stupidly did this with my daughter! When she pulled the trigger, I moved, scope and gun moved, she did not! Bad case of scope eye, hard lesson in recoil physics learned! |
RE: legally blind
I hope you take him to the range and find out what will work in a live fire situation. If you start improvising while in the field you will end up with someone being injured or a deer being wounded and a bad experience for everyone.
Good luck. |
RE: legally blind
I took Brandon to the range today and we tried a few different things. He handles the rifle well. I tried sitting behind him and helping sight the rifle, but that did not work well at all. It looks like if there was a mount that offset the scope it would work well. I heard of laser sighting devices, but I don't know a dag um thang about them. The comments are very much appreciated and I am sure something will work eventually.

RE: legally blind
I'm sure you could use a laser style sight that way he could hold the gun and all while you help position it on the deer. Thi way you are not trying to look around him and not getting in eachothers way. Some states have laws against using these but 'm sure there are ways around it ke in your situation.
Brandon Something like this. http://cgi.ebay.com/FULL-SET-LASER-POINTER-SIGHT-SCOPE-FOR-GUN-PISTOL-RIFLE_W0QQitemZ320050241950QQihZ011QQcategoryZ6682 7QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem |
RE: legally blind
I am thinking the same way you are. Try to off-set another scope off of his. sight that scope in with the original scope and aim with that. I am sure you can rig something up with a pair of scope mounts.

RE: legally blind
Be sure to check your state law before trying the lasers. It is illegal here to use any sighting device that projects a light on the animal!

RE: legally blind
I've really been brain stormin. I thought maybe a red dot scope would work if I fabricate a mount that is offset from the rifle. What I don't know is how much adhustment I would have on the windage. I figure if the scope is offset about 5-6 inches I would be able to sight the target without getting into Brandon's way to make the shot. By the way he is left handed so I think it would be better for me being right eye dominant. What do you folks think. By the way thanks for all the comments they have really been helping me think through this

RE: legally blind
what about using a pistol scope on the rifle. This allows you t focus from a bit farther back, like sitting behind him.
I saw an episode on the Texas trophy hunters. One guy took his best friend who was blind, hunting. He sat behind him and aimed the gun for him. |
RE: legally blind
Thats awesome that you are doing that. Good luck to him!
|
RE: legally blind
I will try the pistol scope, that is a great idea thanks

RE: legally blind
Well tommorrow is the big day for Brandon. We have decided to use a shotgun as a trial. If ya'll would cross your fingers or whatever you do for Brandon to have a successful trip. Just going will be good for him, but getting that first one would be great.

RE: legally blind
Well I thought I would let you folks know that me and Brandon didn't get one. I saw a deer about 150yards out, but couldn't see what it was. When I first saw it I told Brandon there's a deer and he asked where. Of course I pointed and said it's about 150 yards out, see it yet? Brandon turned to me and said "Maybe if it was in the stand with us." He did have a huge smile on his face. So we didn't score, but I told him when doe week came in we would give it another try. I also told him how awsome the folks on this sight have been. Thanks again
