RE: Ground Hunting
CT,
Ground blinds are nice but they can be a pain to bring into the woods and set up in the dark. I suggest you practice setting up and taking down in your yard several times until it is second nature. It can be very frustrating wrestling in the dark with one. |
RE: Ground Hunting
I allmost always hunt from the ground during the rifle season. I prefer to find an elevated area, like the edge of a draw, or the side of a ridge overlooking a field. I always set upon a fairly big tree, big enough to hide my outline.First I scrape away all the leaves and debree from whereI'm gonna sit, that way I can move and stretch without making a noise, Iuseone of those turkey seats that has the folding feet, and sits only about 4 inches off theground. On the ground, your under the foilage and tree branches(most of the time) so you don't have to shoot thru a heavy, dense canipy. It can also help cut the wind if it's windy out, so it won't be as cold like sitting up high, and getting all that wind in your face. Like said befor, use the wind. I always sit with the wind in my face if theres any, looking over the draw or field. When they travel, especially during hunting season when they get pressure, they like to travel in cover, like the bottom of a draw, or along the slope. If possible I find a spot where a finger or point comes into the draw, then I have an almost 360 degree viewing area. not just a left, right, and front view. Also when they travel, they'll be walking in the dried leaves, so you can hear them coming, and give you time to be prepared to have the gun up. Hope this helps, and good luck, keep us posted on how you did! Scott
