270 and bullet weight
 

It's getting really close to season and i'm wondreing if i made the right choice in bullets for my 270. I currently plan to shoot winchester 150grain power points out of my savage 270. I hunt in a small lot of land with shots ranging from 35 yards out to probably 65 yards. The average is about 50 yards. I was wondering if the 150 grain bullet would just blow through the deer with out the ballistics. Would the 130grain be a better bullet for close range. Does anyone have experience with the 270 and close range deer hunting. My other option is the old trusty 30-30

I shoot a deer in 2004 with my 270 win with a 150 SP(reload) the bullet went throught the deer but he drop right in his tracks. it was about a 30 yard shoot in the woods.

Unless they do not shoot good in my rifle, I would never use heavier than 130 grain bullets for deer with the 270. The 130 is how it gained its reputation.

A 270 with a 130grn bullet is arguably the best combo for whitetails you can get. That being said, the deer will be just as dead with those 150's. I wouldnt spend anymore $ on the 130's until the 150'swere gone.

I agree with james 100 %. For whitetails, 130 grain is all you need. Also, if I remember my ballistics table correctly, the 130 grain will drop less at long ranges (all things being equal such as bullet type)

I've shot two deer under fifty yards with a 150 grain nosler partition in .270 caliber. One was about 40 yards away, and the shot entered behind the front shoulder and exited in front of the far shoulder. It left a hole I could put my fist in on the exit. Same result from the last deer I shot at about 12 yards except it hit behind both shoulders. So, I wouldn't worry at all about using the 150 grain bullets.

I shot a basket rack 8 pointer(my biggest deer to date) three years ago with the exact same bullet, I hit about 1 inch behind both shoulders and the deer kinda ran trotted about 5-10 yards and stopped, i knew i hit him well so i just watched instead of pumping him full of lead, he stood about 1-2 seconds and fell over dead, that was about 30 yards, if you shoot the winchester powerpoints CXII, the ones intended for deer then you should be fine, i think your would even be fine with the CXIII's, but to say the least, i think you will be just fine and good luck,

I shoot a 130 grainHornady in a 270 and downed a 280lb buck in Canada ...seems to work well inside 200 yards.

I shoot 150 grain rounds (Core-Lokt)from my .270 Win, although I'm normally operating at a range of between 100 and 200 yards. So far, I'd say their stopping ability is very good. I've taken 4 deer, and on average they've run about 35 yards from the shot.

Win. ballistic silvertip 130 grain WSM out of a Browning A-bolt. I have had better results from 130 grain than 150 grain. Will never use anything but 130 grain.
