Scope or Gun
 

What is more likely to go off, the scope or the gun? When I went to sight in this year, I wasn't even on the paper at 100 yards. I had to move in to 20 yards to get the bullet on the paper. It was about 1.5ft high and left at 20 yards. I thought it was a fluke. I zeroed it and began to hunt with it. Well, I ended up gutshooting a doe last week and never found it. No blood at all and no gut matter other than where she was shot. I took my gun to the sighting in area and it was 7 inches to the right at 50 yards (the doe was walking broadside from right to left).

The gun: Remington Model 700 .243
The scope: Simmons 3-9 from walmart.

BTW, the gun was sighted in at 80 yards last year.

Do scopes fail that dramatically, even cheap ones? Should I be worried about my gun?

im thinking it is the scope. im not saying cheap scopes are the only ones that fail, or even that you shouldnt use cheap scopes. but after you sight in, you should still practice on several more occasions. this will give more time to see if the scope always comes of zero, and may give you another chance to analize the problem

First thing I would check is the bases and rings, make sure everything is good and tight. I don't think it will be your gun, I have saw alot of model 700 243's and they all have shot just pretty decent, you can check the bore but I bet its alright, If the scope is not loose, try another scope.

The problem is probably spelled SIMMONS. Save up and get the best scope you can afford and you will never want another cheap scope.

I agree with Timber. I would bet it's the scope. I would check everything and make sure all is tight first. I went through 3 Simmons scopes the last few years and had problems with them all. Pieces loose on the scope itself and internal pieces. I finally bought a Luepold and WOW what a difference. Not only no problems but can see through much longer. I used to be able to see better with eyes in very low light situtations than through Simmons now the Luepold just lights everything up.

I had a problem with my Simmons 3x9 too.
It wasn't consistently shooting to one spot. It was all over the place. at 50 yards, I could keep better groups with open sights.
The problem was a loose reticle. It would shift slightly with each shot and I got terrible groups. I'm no bench competitor, but the resulting groups were well below my abilites.
Fortunately, my scope was only on my Ruger 10/22 and never used for hunting. Great little gun, and the scope has been fine ever since I got it fixed.

THE GOOD NEWS: Simmons fixed it for free. Actually, I sent it back to the gun shop and they paid for all of the shipping, but I do believe it was Simmons who ate the repair costs.

I agree scope is most likely the culprit. If you have iroin sight try them and see what happens? if she shoots good then you know for sure. Check your rings and mounts to ensure they are tight and not damaged. Have a gun shop check it over and boresight it again for you, then try 25 yards and 100 to see if you can get it ironed out. If you have to borrow a gun, don't take that out in the field as it sits not very ethical IMO.

I shoot a simmons 2.5-10x50 pro 50 and never have had problems and we really never have to sight it in and it shoots consistent groups at 100 bullets in same hole most the time.. Check all you connections i bet that the rings are goofy or something.

Like others have said check youre rings and bases. and then scope. I have had rear rings get loose just a little and it will cause major fly. tighten them and resight. i have a few simmons and have had better luck with them than trashcos.
