Default Best Deer Magazines

I want to subscribe to some deer hunting magazines, but I'm not sure which ones are best.

I'm hoping to get some ideas here. I'd like to know what magazines you would recommend and why.

Also, I've heard that Field and Stream and Outdoor Life aren't really considered "hunting" magazines. Would you agree with that? They certainly seem to review a lot of hunting gear.

Thanks.

North American Whitetail is a good one and the reason for that is hunting whitetail is all they talk about.
The y have great stories about big whitetails and how the hunters got them , they also have tips and gear reviews.

The Quality Deer Management Association magazine is excellent if you have an interest in deer management, deer foods etc. Well worth the membership fee. My second choice would be Deer and Deer Hunting.

I recommend field & stream. Here's why: superb writing, and great info. Plus there's excellent & humorous photos - "First Shot" is worth seeing every month. No, it is not a purely 'hunting' mag; there's fishing in there, too. But it is well written, and contains great info. Their reviews/recommendations of gear are worthwhile, but I take with a grain of salt - like their ludicrous recommendation of $500 squirrel guns. They review for the well-heeled, you could say, which I'm not.

Field & Stream is much, much better than I remember it being fifteen years ago. Last month they had a superb article on deer camps - it was hilarious - and a great photo layout on 'why we hunt' by some lady photog whose name I cannot recall. I look forward to it every month. Excellent article this month on rut & buck in rut; starts this:

"The classsic impression of a big buck in rut is similar to that of a former president of the US. For just about the entire year, the former is among the canniest of animals, with powers of evasion that border on the supernatural. then mating season rolls around and he becomes a carelss doe-crazed beast. The former chief exec in question - A Georgetown grad, a Rhodes scholar, Gov. of Arkansas, the Leader of the Free World - was the perpetual Smartest kid in Class until he met the fat girl in the blue dress. BUT that's only part of the story - he beat the rap, finished his term in office, and is now out here making millions playing the Elder Statesman game"
<SNIP>

Anyhow... F&S is my recommendation.

I second D&DH. The other's, I check out at wallyworld or B&N, if I see an article of interest, I buy it. I subscribe to D&DH..

I also subscribe to New York Game & Fish, being in NY, but I highly reccommend you look for a simmilar magazine covering your state to get some good local info..

Don't overlook the freebie info on magazine's websites, you'd be suprised how much you can find online..

Big Buck, hunter written/told stories about deer/game harvested and awesome photography on live deer as well. Not a lot of how to's or reviews though my wildlife membership rags have such in them.
