RE: WOUNDED DEER!

I spine shot a mule deer once by accident. When I approached him, he was trashing pretty hard and there was no way that I was going to try to get a knife by his throat.. he would have pegged me for sure. I held the rifle about a foot from him and put it through his heart.

Personally, I don't ever want to put a bullet through a deer's head... it doesn't matter if I'm going to mount it or not. Just too messy for me.

The shot through the heart was very quick and did the job.

RE: WOUNDED DEER!

With a gun I have only had to use a second shot once, it was a doe, it was the first neck shot I have ever tried and the last, she went down like a ton of bricks, never moved her legs, but was still alive, I put the second one in her ear.

I had my first bowkill this year, the shot deflected after cutting the tip of the shoulder blade and shattered her spine, I put a second one through her heart to finish the job.

It bothers me, but I have no regrets as long as I know I am making the kill as quickly and humanely as possible.

RE: WOUNDED DEER!

When deer hunting I carry a Browning .22 Challenger as a sidearm, in addition to my hunting rifle. For deer or hogs I have used a .22 short placed between the eyes w/muzzle about a foot from the head to complete a second kill shot. Quick, effective and doesn't harm cape or meat.

Shot placement and hunter patience is important to make an effective, quick kill. Our game deserve no less.

Walk up to it and shoot it in the neck, kills them almost instantly.

I had this happen. I hit a big buck in the rump. Then the heart. He kept running. I then shot and hit him in the leg. I walked up to him and he try to get up so I put another in his lungs. I was using a 30-06. He was a tough buck!!

RE: WOUNDED DEER!

I was hunting on the south edge of a swamp last thanksgiving morning, when i heard movement on the hill behind me. I turned and saw 3 does go over a ridge, but the fourth deer, a buck saunterd down the hill toward me . He was about 40 yards from when he stopped on the hillside. I cracked him a little high on the shoulder, and the slug went in at an angle and severed his spinal cord. He dropped immediately and slid down the hill about 10 yards and got caught behind a fallen tree. I could see that he could not move his hind legs, but occassionaly would prop uo on his front legs only to fall back down. After a few minutes, I circled around him and came down the hill on top of him, and then put another slug through his heart at about 8-10 feet away. He died within a few minutes.
