Coyotes effect deer hunting?

I have about 5 coyotes living on the land that I hunt which is about 68 acres. I really was worried about it because my buddy who's parents own the land says he hears them all the time at night killing animals and I hadn't seen one deer up until Saturday morning. As I was gettingto mystand at about 7:15 (later than usual) I saw two coyotes heading my way, but as soon as they saw my they took off. I didn't think I would see any deer, but I ended up seeing seven.

Sorry for the long set up, but my questions are, can coyotes and deer livein the same surrounding area and will coyotes bother deer? I know if a newly born fawn is around the coyotes would go after it, but surley not an adult deer. Should I let the coyotes be and enjoy watching them or should I get control of them before the deer start moving off the land?

If the coyotes are hungry enough they will go after just about anything! I have a couple of packs with about 6 - 8 in each! They start howling and I never see any deer! Last week they started up and I made a Fawn in Distress call and 4 came running in with in 2 minutes looking for the fawn! I shot at one and my arrow was a little high!
I will be up at the Cabin for 3 weeks Bowhunting and thinning out the Yotes!!!!! Good luck!

Coyotes are bad for deer. You might not notice it at first but they take a toll on the fawns and in a few years you'll notice. I have a place that yotes moved in on, now the deer are super skittish and I never see any fawns or young deer.

Kill them on sight , they'll ruin the deer hunting .

In many areas of the country the deer have no option, there are coyotes everywhere. I'm not sure how many adult deer coyotes kill, but we have learned that if you shoot a deer in the afternoon you need to go ahead and go after the deer or the coyotes will leave you a pile of bones and that's all.

I plan on shooting any coyotes I see while hunting especially with bow since it's a more stelth. I know where the den of the coyotes is at, but not sure what to do. Any suggestions?

Cleetus,

With that many coyotes, I think I'd carry a rifle for the sole purpose of thinning those guys out. There is one on the land that I hunt, but the landowner doesn't want me to shoot him because he keeps the rabbit population down (and cleans up my field dressings). But he has said if there is more than one, shoot all but one. I have seen one several times while out hunting.
Here in Iowa we have continuous open season on coyote, but in Indiana you are restricted to 10/15-3/15.

RE: Coyotes effect deer hunting?

Plus we can't carry firearms while bow hunting, so it's either hope the coyotes get close enough for a bow shot or stop bow hunting for deer and hunt the coyotes while I am seeing them. I have been out three times so far this bow season and have seen coyotes 2 of the three times.

I would get my buddies together one weekend and have a dedicated yote hunt.

Thin them out before your deer population gets worse.

I have a few buddie that don't hunt deer, but would help me hunt the coyotes. I am just concerned that with me seeing deer right now, will that hurt my hunting if we all went out with guns and started shooting in the woods that see NO humanpresenceexcept me during hunting season.

Go out and buy a predator call, skip deer hunting for a day and unload on come wild dogs!

I have read a few studies that Coyotes can take 30% of the Deer population in any given area. I’m with everyone else if you want deer to hunt assassinate the Coyotes.

Okay, well looks like this week I will be hunting coyotes.

Thanks everyone for the advice....I just hope that big 10 pt doesn't walk by while I am hunting coyotes.

Even with the number of deer coyotes kill, the number of deer hit by vehicles, the number of deer lost to severe winters, the number of deer taken by poachersand the number of deer taken legally by hunters - the number of deer (for the most part) is on the rise.

The coyote is an integral part of deer management, it's part of nature. I have not and will never shoot a coyote. It's the old feeling that I do not want to mess with nature. Kinda the same way I will not interfere and save a rabbit from a hawk or fox and I have had that chance.

For those that want to kill coyotes, good luck to ya, no problemo here.

I understand I am the exception, not the rule, because most hunters I know (and respect) will hardly ever let a coyote walk if they have the chance.

OK, I'm ready - fire away!

Jimmy S, I agree. I think It is so strange that its ok forhunters to kill deer, but it is a sin for a coyote to kill a deer. Just plain and simple human greed. Yes, you need to controll their numbers the same as deer.

Kill the 'yotes or you'll notice a big impact on your deer hunting. I don't think theykill deer in large numbers but deer will move to areas that contain fewerpredators, wether it's man or coyote.

I disagree with this, they moved in after the wolves were gone here? But, somehow they bread with wolves making the Eastern Coyote a type of hybrid killing machine. Unlike the wolves a coyote attacks it's prey differently, and doesn't care how many the can kill at once. Snow and ice is when they kill most the deer here. Young and old, large or small is not a problem for them once they get them circled.

I agree with the rest " shoot em "

The wolf is a pack animal and there has never been a documented case of a wolf killing any human!

RE: Coyotes effect deer hunting?

All I know is that when I shot my deer Saturday, I knew I hit her right in the heart. When she ran into the corn my concern was not if I would find her or not, but if I would find her before the coyotes. That is a stress I don't want or need while hunting. I have worked to hard to make the kind of shots I made on her with my bow and have spent way to much money to let a pack of coyotes eat the meat that I am trying to provide for my family.

I respect nature and greatly appreciate all the beautiful things I see while hunting. I am not a killer or get my kicks for the killing part of hunting, but Indiana has a coyote season fora reason. There are far to many of them in areas with homes, pets and kids. I for one don't want them on my property, near my home or near my pets and animals.

Cleetus, I understand completely. Hunting coyotes in NH can be done 365 days a year. It never closes and there is no limit.

I was simply commenting on a reply (above) and I previously mentioned that I am the exception, not the rule when it comes to killing coyotes.

I also said the guys I hunt with will almost always take a coyote if the shot presents itself.

I have a different outlook on coyotes but I certainly respect your decision.

RE: Coyotes effect deer hunting?

I don't think there are very many yotes in Eastern NC, but if I see one it will be dead.

I run beagles also and heard stories of coyotes surronding a hound and tearing it to shreds.

Jimmy S, I wasn't replying to you directly. I respect your outlook on it and would never try and persuad you to think other wise. I didn't feel like you were doing the same towards me. I love hunting and I love talking with people who hunt. Nothing more exciting than talking with another hunter about things they seen and past hunts. My wife says I get more excited about hunting than the kids do about Christmas.....in Indiana Christmas falls during hunting season..:D

Cleetus...
At least on this subject we agree to disagree and that's not a bad thing.

We are both hunters and yes, like you,I get excited as Opening Day gets closer.

To me the excitement, comrauderieand anticipation is such a big part of the whole picture of what we call deerhunting.

Here's hoping the 2006 Indiana deer hunting season is a good one for you........Jimmy

jimmys... at sometime....somewhere...in the course of human events....a human(s) has been killed by wolves.....attacked and subsequently died..died from rabies...died from severe trauma....just died ..and wolves were the cause...or at the very least highly suspected...predators do these type of things....Not documented doesnt mean it hasnt happened.....You dont have to be the GRIZZLY MAN to find out!!!!

My statement was they are a threat...yada yada yada .

............PEACE BE WITH YOU

Coyotes will not ruin your Deer hunting.

Again, they will not ruin it - so don't worry about it.

There have been many recent studies and articles on it. They can impact fawn success, but they will not wipe out or seriously impact deer populations. They will take some young, old and sick. So let them.

The farm I hunt is packed with coyotes and has been for the 6 years I'veowned it. Its full of coyotes, deer, turkey & grouse. Its a nice cycle of nature & I'm grateful to be part of it. The coyotes serve there purpose.

Don't get me wrong, I will shoot the bastards anytime I can....but it won't bother your deer any. Just provide them with good habitat and food and they will survive anything!

I’ve been observing the deer in my field at dusk lately and have noticed they are not concerned at all when the coyotes do there calling in packs , even thought they are close to the deer. The deer just keep on eating in the field without the slightest hesitation. Just an observation on my part...

Plenty of yotes in E N.C. dog runners have been complaing about running more yotes than deer for two years.A yote will run a pack of dog to death if you dont kill that yote.

I've talked to many beaglers like myself who say a pack of yotes will surround a beagle and tear it to shreds.
I run my dog with a bell on. I've heard that will scare a coyote away.
I hunt Nash county and never heard or seen a coyote.

Richmond CO. and surronding counties have plenty of cyotes they are spreading like wild fire.A single yote will run from a pack of dogs the race will go on untill every dog is exausted. When your dogs first jump you think its a deer then after a while youll notice the run pattern is not a deer.Youve got to get in front of those dogs and kill that yote. Most times the yote is less than 100 yards in front of the dogs.
