RE: The moon and deer movement
I love the hunters that think the whitetail deer needs a full moon to aid in its sight at night time. Believe it or not, deer actually have a harder time seeing in bright daylight because of the rod/ cone configuration in thier eyes. Also, shine a light in a deer's eyes and you will see a reflection . Then try with a human. You dont see peoples eyes reflecting light at all. Infact shine a light in any predator's eyes and you will see the same, cat or canine ( they will all reflect light back). Whether wild or domestic. This is caused by a special addition to thier eyes that a human does nothave called the tapetum lucidum. Any of these " nightime species" needs no aid of light at night. This is to thier advantage in nature..." especially the predator." The whitetail deer is a survival machine from its eyes all the way down to its nose. This is why its territory has expanded and it vertually can survive in any surroundings. Forrests, swamps, Islands, plains, deserts, Farmland, urban areas ( by eating from peoples gardens and landscape plants)
The best time to be out is as often as you can be. Then you will know that you did your best. It is possible that the moon causes "wildlife" to react to it in certain ways. But if you look hard enough its alot less than we think. Other factors like barrometric pressure and deminishing hours of daylight in consecutive days of seasons play alot more roles in activity ofthe whitetail deer. |
