I am curious as to see how many of you have actually had success with Estrous type lures or scents? All that I have seen them do is spook does. Most bucks that I have seen have walked right by my scents and never seemed to pay attention to them.

Hank, if you don't know how to or when to use scents then don't. As far as the estrus scents I use tinks 69, but you got to know when the rut is and use it at this time and maybe just prior to attract Mr. Big. I set out canisters of 35mm canisters with cottonballs dowsed in Tinks. I have seen this stuff work from my own personal experience and I stick with what works. It cost a little bit and requires some time to put the canisters out, but how serious are you? Good luck, Bobby

Hank, I never bought into the attractant scents theory. I have tried some at times, but only had immature bucks check it out.. One reason i use to stay clear from scents is the intructions most say place the scent downwind of you, meaning your wind is blowing to the scent and the deer. That just doesn't float in my deer world, I think I have a theory why this is TREESTANDS. They allow a little more error. Guess what I hunt on the ground so no good. Now I will tell you I have found that James Valley Scents believes what i do place the scent upwind in a shooting lane and have the wind on your nose not the bucks. Now it may not bring them in from far, but to be honest no scent will attract bucks or deer if the area is not frequented by the deer. Meaning placing the cannister with whatever scent out in poor area, will relate to zero success. Like any other technique you must still do your homework and have a good spot...no sub. for scouting and knowing where the deer are and going at given times of the day and year. I think all to many think the use of scents will mean bucks will come from miles, that just ain't going to be the case. If you place it in natural travel routes, transition areas, rublines(breeding zones), I think the success should go up. But just remember if a buck has a hot doe he ain't coming to find another till job #1 is done, the idea is catch them looking for love. Here's a thought on when I think scents maybe the best in success, chase phase or the time of pre-rut when they are tailing does but they aren't ready yet...this just might get him to come smell the roses. Sure rut should and will work as well but their is lots of compitition as well, which is why you'll often see the immature bucks come a looking...just a thought.

If a scent brings a buck into my range or out it has done it's job...NO. Just b/c he doesn't run up and sniff the roses don't mean it didn't help. I am going to try some scents this year, I have a test sample of "Leathal Weapon" from James Valley I am going to lay down. I also have a couple others that buddies have if the leathal weapon should happen to do nothing or runs dry. Would I bank on a scent alone.....Never but it only has to work once and I may be a scent toter for good.

i starting using wildlife research scents this year in tinks scent bombs. earlier in the season i used plain doe (no estrus) scent and none of the deer paid any attention to it, it didn't scare them away either. Just prior to the rut i used some tarsal gland scent and had 2 does run right up to it and sniff the bottle. Just this weekend, which is prime time rut in MD, i put out some estrus scent. within 30 minutes of setting up i had a nice 8 pt. buck come right in at a trot heading for the scent. my bow creaked when i drew and beings i was hunting on the ground he heard it and didn't step into the shooting lane where i can get a shot. 20 minutes later another smaller buck came in at a trot right for the scent, same problem with the bow and i didn't get a shot on him either. all the deer came in within 15 yards of me in the brush. took my bow to the shop at 7:30 that morning and got it lubed up to take care of the noise.

Went back that afternoon and used the estrus scent about 70 yds. from where i set up that morning. didn't see any deer, but heard one snort downwind in the distance. i'm thinking it was probally the buck i spooked that morning and he doesn't want to go back to the scent because he remembered something wasn't right this morning?

I've had luck with both Tinks 69 and Jackies buck lure. Like others have said, you have to use it at the right time and also the right place. I only put it out in areas that I know the does come through. And while useing it, you have to be ready to get off a quick shot. A mature buck may come into estrus lure but will leave if he can't find the source. I would like to try using a decoy for situations like that.

Overall, I've killed 3 bucks using it and know lots of guys who have had good luck as well.

Check out Field and Stream this month. A Deer Biologist in Georgia has performed research on this subject and data showed that ordinary doe urine worked best. All deer bucks and does are curious and react to urine. Good thing for us is its usually the cheapest. This past w/e I was up in my climber and had a 8 pointer come out of the cutovers and walked towards me. When he crossed the fire break leading to the hardwoods (my location) he locked in on my doe urine I had squirted on the ground. With nose down entire time he walked calmly to my stand. I dropped him with muzzleloader from 40 feet...

Doesn't work like this always for sure, but I'll take it !

Tinks 69 has worked for me but only at the right time of year.I'm going to try a smoke stick this year to see how that works.I'm going to use in down in a gully that runs north and south where I can sit up on the side and see what happens.I'll have my decoy to give him something to come to,just hope it works. Our rut doesn't get going until January so it will be a while.

Hunting is not a sport,it's a lifestyle.

A friend of mine that owns a sporting goods store told me he uses Tink's 69. He takes a small spray bottle, mixes it half and half with steril water and as he is going to his stand he squirts a little occasionally, then when he gets in his stand he mist a little every 30 or so minutes. Claims it works real good.
