I won't do it in a ground blind, but if you are 25-30' in a tree stand, it won't matter!

This comes up every year and there are somesay it makes no differanceand some say it scares away the deer. I don't smoke at all but if I am awake I have a big dip of Skoal in. I have seen deer smell around mypath and come on in and some sniff and go. I am out to enjoy my hunt and I can't do that if I am in a nicotine fit from not dipping. If it scares some away so be it but there will be some that pay no attention to the smoke.

I hear that. I dont spit on the ground. I use a cup with a straw in it and spit down the straw. And I have a cupholder on my stand!I figured it would cover the scent more with a lid on the cup.

I have also been told both ways. Me personaly I smoke while Ihunt at about 1 per hour. I have killed both does and bucks. I killed a doe last year and lit up within 15 minutes after killing it. A buck walked out in same field while im smoking and i took it also. So i have killed deer while smoking but im sure i have spooked some off i never saw.

i agree with rebel hog..

i smoke up in the air and out ashes and butts in a container, that's
taken out of woods..

deer rely on eyes, ears and nose.. so i figure they can scent that nasty
smell on ground..

heat usually rises so the smoke goes up, unitl a down draft..

haven't you been outside of a building and smelled someone smoking
aways from ya?.. keep that in mind..

45 Cal, if you go on the Tree Lounge Site, you will see on their videos thatwhen they set off an Orange Smoke Bomb at 20-30' the smoke never comes down to the ground!:)

I have smoked while deer hunting and still have had good luck.
One deer I have shot was because I smoked. I had sat down
to light one up and heard something walking. The biggest buck
I had ever shot walk right beside me. ( about 15 yards ) So I
feel at times it may make a difference and other times it just
doesn't matter.

I'm not condoning it but I smoke on stand. I try to keep it to a minimum and put the butts in a film vile. I think the movement associated with smoking is what can get you busted more than the oder.;)

FTH,

I've smoked most of my life and ain't proud of it. Just wentthruheart bypass surgery in July, so I as most that smoke, can say, maybe.Don't get me wrong, I'm trying weakly tostay ofthem, and failing miserably.I definitely do recommend them. I also have always said, a dope addict don't have a thing on a smoker, other than price. I've got some pretty good racks nailed up to my barn, some while smoking and some not. I, however, do believe it probably has alerted some deer that I never saw. My brother chews and talked about actually spiting tobacco juice on the back of deer that directly under his stand. In that light, I droped an empty bottle of tinks 69 (cap on) onto the back of a doe one time and she never paid it a bit of attention.

But, as I said earlier, I have no way of knowing what I might have seen had I not been smoking.

i dont smoke, but my dad smoked for years when iw as a kid and smoked while hunting all the time. the way i see it is if you really need a smoke, then smoke. but if you can make it without one, then why add an extra odor for them to smell. its hard enough outsmarting a buck, and avoiding detection, why give him more ways to detect you??

Copper31 09-04-2006 02:34 PM

My dad always smoked in the stand and he said it nevered mattered. He also never saw any good deer. Every once in a while he would see a small nub or doe but that was it.

I know a guy who smokes a pipe (no not that kind of pipe... ;)) and smokes some kind of weird, aromatic, vanilla flavored, type of pipe tobacco. The guyalways fills his tags and swears that the pipe tobacco might actually be a curiosity smell to a deer.

....Go figure.

tj_cubin 09-05-2006 04:50 AM

RE: Smoking While Deerhunting

butch, i used to have some teenagers sit up wind from me in bow season and smoke "that kind of pipe". i never saw any deer under those circumstances, and i doubt they saw much of anything going on around them.

ButchA 09-05-2006 06:58 AM

RE: Smoking While Deerhunting

LOL!!! Yeah, I can imagine.... That type of, uh, smoke would definitely not be natural to a deer or anything else in the woods. ;)

I don't smoke anymore , but I've had plenty of deer walk up right after I finished a cig or while I was smoking it . Unless they associate that particular smell with danger it doesn't seem to bother them . Deer are very curious by nature .

I have been sitting on the ground with my back against a tree and had 2 come up so close to me that I could have hit them with my hand. I don't think that it bothers them at all. Soon after that,I took a decent buck. I am hunting the same place this year and I think that I should have a good shot at taking a nice buck this year.

Remember the basics about being scent free!! You can't be scent free if the wind is carrying your smoke down wind and your cloths smell of smoke because you lit up in the truck or car while driving to where you're going to hunt. If people can smell cigarette smoke on you, so will the deer. Will it always spook them?I don't know. It's easy for me since I don't smoke anymore. And yes you're right, reformed smokers are the worst critics. I don't know about using 'Skoal' so I'll reserve comment. But if smoking and/or chewing makes your day enjoyable, then enjoy!! Just my 2 cents worth.

What's worst than smoking on stand is,

1. Wearing your hunting boots before going to your hunting site. You stop and get gas and are stepping where gashad been spilled.
2. Then you decideyou have to go to the Rest Room and step on a urine soaked floor.

If you watch the Tree Lounge Instructional Videos, they demonstrate with a Orange Smoke Bomb at 20-30' and the smoke never comes down to the ground.

The only time I would not smoke is when I was still hunting or in a ground blind.

DannyD 09-06-2006 06:51 AM

RE: Smoking While Deerhunting

Wouldn't smoking just add more movement while out in the woods? I man even if the smoke doesn't bother them certainly you have to move more often while smoking than you do if you didn't smoke.

And if that's the case isn't your chances of getting busted greater?

As long as your not smoking crack or meth (fire) and up off of the ground then you should be ok.

I shot my first bow buck with a Newport hanging from my mouth. I was 15 and that was the bad part.

I would think that smoking will not interfere too much with hunting deer. I would be more concerned with the motion of puffs of smoking catching the deer's visual attention than the scent of cigarettes disturbing the deer. I used to smoke and enjoyed it a lot. It seems smoking while sitting in the woods hunting deer would be very pleasant and relaxing. But . . . quit smoking so you'll live longer.

Maybe they wanted to "bum a fag" themselves:D
Truth is...smoke is a natural thing. If they are close and get a strong whiff, it may irritate them though and maybe they leave. I smell the rednecks burning their garbage where I hunt all the time and deer pay no attention to it. They would have to leave the county if it bothered them.

Well, that's your opinion and you are entitled to it! Apparently you have never hunted over controlled burn areas. I have been in the woods over 50yrs and havekilled my share! Now it's your turn.:)

well, I smoke but I do not smoke on stand, or while I have my hunting clothes on. My hunting clothes dont see nothing but the woods and the woods only. Before every hunt Ill smoke 1 last cig and then shower, I wont smoke another until Im back at the house. I do this while scouting also. I figure why go thru all that descenting process and then ruin it by lighting up. but I know people that do and they do kill deer but not the kings.

I agree Smokyghost, why bother decenting your cloths and body only to ruin it. I'll give the smokers this, maybe it doesn't hurt chances of getting a buck...but it sure doesn't help.

I think this topic has been prety well discussed. So good luck to all...the smokers, the chewers and those who do neither.

NYC,the only thing different from a Tinks Smoking Stick and a cigarette is, the cigarette is bad for your health. What's the difference between a Tinks Smoking Stick and a Aromatic Pipe Tobacco or a Back Woods "Honey Berry" cigar?
