RE: Water in chest cavity?
I wouldn't flush it out unless it had been contaminated with stomach contents or the like. Keep the cavity clean and dry. Bacteria need moisture. If there is an excessive amount of blood in the chest cavity, then I would try to wipe it out with a very clean cloth or paper towels.

RE: Water in chest cavity?
Due to our normally warmer weather i do wash the blood sometimes . but i quarter it and put it on ice quickly. i let it sit in ice ,changing it often ,for a couple of days.

It's o.k. to flush it out with water as long as you pat it dry with a towel when your done. Your absolutely correct about the bacteria from water. I wouldn't even wash it out unless you fear it's been contaminated.
