How cold is too cold?
How low does the temp have to be before you reconsider going out? I have a difficult time keeping warm below 10-20 degrees F. I have to dress in so many layers I can't even lift the gun to my shoulder.
Also, like most hunters I get nervous when I hear deer coming. Well, if I'm cold also, I shake like mad. This happened last night and it turned out to be a fawn, but it took me several minutes to stop shaking. (after some silent calisthenics in my tree stand). |
RE: How cold is too cold?
Ive got 6 days to gunhunt, I will be out for every one of them no matter temp, snow, wind or rain. Cant get a deer in the cabin! If bitter cold -10 to -20 we will do dirves.

RE: How cold is too cold?
Cold has never kept me from going out in the woods. The thing that I really hate is if it is pooring rain, but usually by gun season it will just snow. I personally love the cold because I seem to always see more deer when it is cold out, and it also makes it much easier to heasr them coming. Maybe you should look into getting better layers like polypropelene (i think that is how it is spelled) or Raven Wear. It can be expensive but being in your stand when a huge buck is in front of you is priceless.

RE: How cold is too cold?
10-20 degrees is a warm front. I thought you were talking about cold weather. The peak of the rut here in NW Montana is the last 2 week in November and the weather is very challengeing and if you can't sit still than you might as well leave. I layer up useing several layers of polar fleece, and a heavy jacket on the outside, the hardest part is my feet gets cold first but I have made some changes this year in that deparment, It seems like its always cold here dureing hunting season except for the bow season. If you are properly dressed for it than you can handle it. Use wool and try to stay away from cotton. To dress in cold weather is really a science and time consumeing, but if you can't sit comfortable its very difficult to hunt. When I hunt in extreme cold weather the first hour I actually acclimate my body to get very cold, after I go through the numbing process I can sit for many hours. Sorry, didn't mean to ramble on. RE: How cold is too cold?
It never gets too cold here. In Missouri it maybe gets in the 10's as the lowest, which is not too cold.
Guns cause crime, like flies cause garbage. |
RE: How cold is too cold?
It has to be so cold that my legs are frozen and can't take me to my stand. Or, so cold that my vehicle can't take me to my hunting area. Seriously, I has to be THAT cold!!!
every day gone is a day closer to God...and deer season <>< |

RE: How cold is too cold?
The coldest day I have been out was around -5 degrees with no wind. It stayed near that temp all day, and with the exception of going to lunch for 1-2 hours I was out all day. A cold rainy day seems much colder to me.
