Default RE: EVER HUNTED ANTICOSTI ISLAND ?

Never been to Anticosti island. Have heard alot about it though, lots of deer but kind of on the smallish side, velvet with a gun is possible though. If it were me, id try to find an outfitter on Manitoulin island. Lots of deer, but bigger much bigger!

I've been up 2 times with the Sepaq organization. I believe they have around 12 or so camps. The hunts are from 4 to 7 days. You should be able to get your deer in 4 days unless you get too picky. If you hunt early in September or October you could get a buck in velvet. You won't get any 200+ pound deer. This biggest I've heard of getting tagged was 168 pounds. A big buck would be 150#. There are good 18-20" racks. I've heard of 22" and 15 point bucks as well.Usually two to four good bucks are taken per group of 12 per stay. Usually what happens is hunters start taking does or spikes on the second day if they don't see a good buck the first day.The amount of deer you see will be dependent upon how hard you want to hunt. There is very little food on this island. They deer eat a lot of thistle, hanging moss, and sea weed in the winter. I've averaged 140 deer over 4 days the past two years. The bucks you see will be about 10%. The biggest I've taken was an 8 point 18 1/2" at 137#.
The weather can be nasty. There is almost always a wind. If the wind stops plan on seeing lots of deer. It is amazing how they pop up. When it rains it can rain hard. Plan on bringing good rainwear.

Sepaq has a good system where you have 4 hunters per guide. There are three zones per camp so the groups rotate through each zone and end up on their first zone the 4th day you hunt. They have good trails that you walk along but I'd recommend a good GPS if you are going to get off the trail. There are no landmarks so you can get turned around 50 feet off the trail. There are lots of ponds and swamps that you could go the trail to if you desire. I usually average 10 -12 miles walking a day. I'd recommend a good pair of Rocky boots that have goretex.
You will see lots of spikes, 4 points and does and 1-2 bigger deer per 4 days.
If you go I'd recommend you get a group of 2 or 4 hunters. That way your group has it's own guide and you don't get stuck with a roommate you don't like. I'd recommend the American plan. The food is great. They serve breakfast at 6am and the trucks are on the road by 7am. You will not be able to leave any earlier but don't worry there are plenty of deer. In October the days hunt end at around 6pm. They will have hors deorvres and dinner waiting for you.
The later in the season you go the shorter the hunting hours and they charge you more and they don't start out any earlier so you're paying more money for less hunting time. I've been told there are more bigger bucks that are seen then though.
The guides will cape your heads and box your meat for your return flight.

I hope this helps.

Good Hunting!
