Wildest thing that happend to you in the woods.
Usually one of these up every year so ill start it off this year. What is the most craziest thing that has happend to you or you have seen in the woods.
Mine was going to get a downed deer with my dad on someons property. Which is are legal right because you're allowed to go get downed deer. This guy pulls up, a known butt hole. And my dad say's stay here if he has a gun draw and if he does anything else shoot him. Sure enough walks up with a shotgun and a pistol, and I stand up and draw on him. So were all looking down barrels of guns, he bails. *Side note "SOMEONE" just happend to try and break into the house that night, thanks to A.D.T. or whatever that thing is called and my dads .45 no one ever tried to break in again. |

O.M.G. Where do I start
It seem like every time I go out inthe woods I ether do something stupid or something weired happens. My friend tells me that watching me put my treestands up is like watching laurel & hardy or the three stooges. I will tell you that one day when I was walking inthe woods, I had a red tailed hawk swooped down in front of me. This huge bird is right on the ground not more than five feet away on the the trail with it wings spread out and mouth open. It was likethis bird was yelling at me or trying to fend me off for some reason. |

Ok, I have one! Hubby and I had just got into our tree stands. It was still dark! All of the sudden I heard this scream...it sounded like a horror movie, woman scream. It's dark and I can't see anything. My husband called on the radio, he thought I fell out of my stand and I was screaming. Afterward, I found out it was a bobcat! Talk about freaked out!!!

RE: Wildest thing that happend to you in the woods.
My Dad and I decided to go squirrel hunting on a family farm in late August early Septemberwhere we lived; which is where i did all my hunting growing up. I was probably about 12 or 13 at the time. The spot we were hunting was just big hickory trees with heavy brush all around. There was an old ,small wood house that anold man had lived in in the late 1800'sin the middle of this area. Just imagine if you had about a 30 acre yard that you hadn't cut in about 100 years, mainly briars and cedars, a haven for deer to bed. The old house still had standing walls but it had collapsed enough that the 2nd story window was now the door that you could walk right into on the ground level, which was a dirt floor with some old straw scattered inside. I had been indide this house numerous other times with now problem. My Dad and I had split up and where to meet back there, and when Igot there I walked up along one side toward the front and heard noise inside so I thought it was Dad. As I came around to the front I was probably about 10 feet from the front entry, I saw a very large buck standing toward the back. Before I had time to react, he turned and ran right at me. He jumped out of the house and landed right in front of me, turned on a dime and was gone. He couldn't of missed me by more that a couple of feet. It happened so fastI never even had time to react, just stood there in amazement as to what had just happened. A couple minutes later my Dad showed up and asked me if I had seen a ghost because apparently my face was a little white. Anyway, another family member killed the buck which i recognized so well from our close encounter during rifle season, a 13-pointer that would score about 150. Needless to say, I have been very careful walking up to the old house since.

Almost getting shot by a dumbass in a tree. It wasn't even legal shooting time and he had a scope on his slug gun . The low light combined with that scope was probably the only reason he hesitated , he couldn't see me and was about to fire at noise. I made sure he found out why this was a bad idea .

RE: Wildest thing that happend to you in the woods.
Rifle huntin the high country on a cold, wet, foggy morning. I hiked to the top of a hill that I knew would be a good vantage point once the fog lifted. I crawled under afir tree to wait and as I sat there,a mountain lioncame walking up the same trail with his nose to the ground. At first I thought, what a cool experience. But he kept coming.By the time he was 20 yards away,I was getting nervous and when he was 15 yards away I was plain sacred and so Iput a round in the chamber.I don't know if I could have successfully shot him if I'd tried under the circumstances. Fortunately I didn't have to find out because he heard the action and looked up at me. We stared at each other for a minute, then he put his nose in the air as if in disgust, turned and slowly walked away. He obviously wasn't as impressed with me as I was with him.

RE: Wildest thing that happend to you in the woods.
Several years ago I was deer hunting from a box stand in the evening. I had decided to stay until it was almost totally dark just to see if there was any deer movement. I finally got off the stand and started the short quarter mile walk back to my truck. After about a hundred yds. I noticed I could hear something walking parallel to me about 35-40 yds away as best as I could tell. When I stopped walking to listen whatever it was would also stop. After about 200 yds of this I was starting to get a little nervous. It was really dark by this time, I couldn't see what was following me, but it sounded like it was big enough to be a threat. At this point I loaded my gun, as I had emptied it when I got out the stand. I slowly walked back to my truck with this thing following me all the way. I have been hunting and fishing all my life and have never been uncomfortable in the woods at night, but that evening I was a nervous wreck by the time I got to my truck. I went back the next day to look for tracks but it was really dry and I didn't really find anything. I still wonder what it was, and whether the tables had been turned that evening, and I had gone from predator to prey.

RE: Wildest thing that happend to you in the woods.
One evening, back around 1989, I was archery hunting from a treestand. I was watching over an isolated apple tree, waiting for deer. I was after either a doe or buck. It did't matter. I'd taken a few deer from this spot before. It was a good spot.
There is only one gravel road into this spot and from my tree standI could see any vehicle that would come down the road. You could hear the gravel popping under the tires for almost half a mile as they'd come down that road, also. It was getting late, as I heard a rustle behind me. I slowly turned to see 3 does working their way in. For some reason, they never came around in front of me, to the apple tree. They worked their way past me on my far right. I couldn't get a shot. They milled around for a while ,slowly, on the other side of some brush. I waited in the tree to let them get out of sight. It was getting dark fast and I didn't want them to spook them as I got out of the tree.I was hoping to get another chance, some other day, if I didn'tgive up my location tothem. For some strange reason I had the feeling I should leave the area. It was a fear. I had the urge the whole time I was watching the deer I fought back the urge the whole time, hoping to get a shot. It was weird. The deer were long gone and I decide it was time to get the heck out of there. I lowered my bow and left go of the other end of my rope. As soon as the rope hit the ground I heard a loud growl. It was really loud and higher pitched than a bear. Out of a reflex I guess, I let out a growl of my own and growled back. I was trying to sound bigger I guess and sound like I wasn't afraid and just mocking whoever did that. It growled right back, answering my growl. I was scared. My first impression was, that it was my buddy joking around. But then I remembered he was at work and I came alone. I then tried to think if anyone had come down that road while I was there, and maybe they were hunting and joking around. There'd beennocar down that road, since I've been there and no one was parked there. As I was thinking of this, it growled again. I usually come early to this spot when I hunt and usually wait several hours, to let things settle down. I'd been here for at least 4 or 5 hours. Then It growled again. Whatever it was, it knew I was in that tree. I got out a small flashlight to try to see what this critter was.But the beam was real dim as the batteries were almost dead. I couldn't see a thing. It growled again! The growl was really loud. You could feel it vibrate in your chest. Kinda like when a turkey gobbles at really close range. What ever it was, it sounded like it was ...saying the growl... Raaaarrrrrrr. Like if you ask a little kid to growl, how they would sound, but very loud. It was higher pitched and didn't have that snarl type sound like a bobcat or cougar would have. It sounded like it was being said, if you know what I mean. It was much louder than a person, unless they had a megaphone. It wasn't afraid of me either. I started climbing higher in the tree. I was even considering spending the nite. I was totally scared. I was probably about 25 years old at the time. I'd never felt that afraid. After A while I thought that maybe it had left and decided to start working the treestand down the tree. I made it down a few feet when it growled again. I hurried back up where I was before. I didn't know what to do. It knewI was there and wasn't leaving. It was really dark and I couldn't see a thing. I didn't know what to do. I waited a while longer. It growled a few more times. I decided to make a break for it. I started yelling " Get outta here, go on get! Just leave me alone, get outta here" and stuff like that the whole time I worked the treestand down the tree. When I got to the bottom, I put the dim flashlight in my mouth and unhooked the treestand, grabbed my bow and ran for the truck. I tried not to listen to what was going on around me and just consentrated on my own yelling and getting out of there. I could feel my heart beating out of my chest. I ran to the truck with slobbers running down my face, from the flashlight in my mouth ,and all out of breath. I opened the truck, threw my stuff in, jumped in and locked the doors, started it up and got out of there. I had never been that scared. I don't know what it was but I won't hunt there to this day. Maybe it was just a bobcat but I don't think. It would have caught my scent and wouldn't have stuck around with me growling and yelling at it. It was very, very loud. I've ruled out another hunter also. Thisplace is way off the beaten path, up in theLaurel Mountains. I would have seen and heard anyone coming down that road. No one did in the 4 or 5 hours I was there. And no person could be that loud. I've even entertained the idea of Bigfoot. I'm a believer it that sorta stuff anyway. I've read alot of stuff on it ever since and some of the stories are similar to mine. I felt a fear in me while I was watching the deer and had the urge to leave then. I can say, that it has affected me and the way I hunt.I always get a little nervous as evening comes, when I'mout hunting.I usually don't stay in the woods that late anymore. I have no idea what it could have been. This is a true story. I can't explain it. Your guess is as good as mine. And yes, it has made a bit of a wimp out of me. |
RE: Wildest thing that happend to you in the woods.
Maybe not the wildest, but certainly the funnest.
My father, brother and I were at our property hunting the muzzle loader season just after X-mass several years ago. I was slowly working my way thru a section of downed pines on the edge of our piece while they were working up frominside thestand of lodgepole pine I was working toward to meet up with them. They must have startled a doe on their way thru and she came barrleing thru the pines at a full run but somehow she didn't see me as she dashed thru the stumps and deadfall. (or maybe I'm that good :)) But when she came around the last rootball in front of me, she finally did see. That doehit the brakesso fast and so hard she stumbled and slid on her backside, just like on a cartoon, about 3 or 4 feet before she stopped all of 5 paces away. She sat thereonher butt like a dog doesa good few secounds, with the funniest look before frantically gettingon her feet, scrambling first one way then the other then back again, before finallyrunning off. Itwasn't that I wastoo startled to not have my rifle up and ready to shoot, but after seeing that whole episode I was laughing too hard and figured she earned the chance to run off anyway. (Dad was pissed at that, though I should have taken the easy shot while she was sitting there, but that's where he and I differ.) |

RE: Wildest thing that happend to you in the woods.
Me and My dad were walking this cut line and i was all intense and into the hunt when suddenly a damn grouse came flying out right towards me i had to duck and it scared the crap out of me so i was shaking like a leaf cause this damn bird. Not 2 mins later a bit more down the cut line a damn bear came running out of this huge pile of wood (scared the crap out of me) both me and my dad both draw our rifles but realize it was only big enough to just be kicked away by its mom plus it started to run so we decided not to shoot it and ruin opening day for elk. So by now my nerves are just shot cause ive had the crap scared out of me twice in about 5mins. WE continue down the cutline about another 100yds and i look down one way on the hill and my dad goes the other way. Suddenly there's crashing and baggin coming right towards me so i thought it was the bear again but suddenly right below me i see a large grey opject run below me so i thought it might be a wolf. I looked a little bit further down the hill and seen an elk standing there. So i fire and im already shaking as it is and i contected. Crash bang boom the elk is rolling down the hill. Then not 2 mins later we thought IRAQ was going on just north of where we were. Turns out it was my cousin uncle and grandfather and they shot a bull and two more cows so we figured i scared the herd right to them so really a weird and crazy day all in all.Oh the elk i shot by the way was the first animal i had ever shot.

RE: Wildest thing that happend to you in the woods.
ok here goes. last year my buddy jason picked up a bow for the first time around july and man can he shoot. he took to it like fish to water. anyways i worked with him to help him gain the bowhunting knowledge that i have gained and the dos and donts in the woods for bow hunting. so season comes in and the first day i put him in a spot that i know holds alot of deer on my farm. after the morning hunt he comes up to the truck and he is going nuts talking about all the deer he saw that were out of range so we went back over to the spot around noon and we moved his stand alittle closer and left it alone for a couple days. he begged me to film the next morning hunt cause he knew he had a great chance at getting his first deer. so he talked me into it and the afternoon before our next morning hunt we went to gander mt to shoot our bows and he needed me to fletch some arrows for him so i did and all was good. so the next morning when we woke up i told him to triple check all his gear and load the truck. he did and we headed to the farm. so we are now set up in the tree and im in my climber in a tree next to him and the morning started slow. i have the camera rollin and her comes the deer, the first 2 stay out about 50 yards and then 3 more move in to our right. they are coming in good and they get about 30 yards and i look over and hes at full draw on a nice big doe. then it happens. he lets an arrow fly and whack. right behind the shoulder but the arrow hits the deer and bounces right off like he shot into steel. i was like what the f#@%*. we were both puzzled. the deer jumped and made all kinds of weird shakes and twitches and put its head down and went back to eatin acorns. it didnt move but maybe 3 feet. so hes at draw again and whack the same thing happens only this time we were busted. another doe looked right up at us and blew and shagged out of dodge. we both then started talking to eachother and couldnt believe our eyes. we then got down to retrieve the arrows and when i picked them up i looked at them and fell on the ground laughing hysterically. he never put his mechanical broadheads on. he hit the deer with 2 arrows with no heads lmao. needless to say he learned his lesson that day and we never let him live that one down. it is still the topic of convo here.

RE: Wildest thing that happend to you in the woods.
After killing 2 bulls last year, we retired early for the pack out the next day. We had an open air camp in the back country. The bushes began to wiggle next to my sleeping bag when out popped a bear who had come in for a quick meal of elk meat. There stands 3 guys in their underwear on their sleeping bags at full draw. Needless to say, we had bear meat hanging in camp that night.
Several years ago I was stalked by a large cougar. After several seconds of screaming and clawing action, the cougar layed down and went to sleep. It now hangs on the wall of my den. It was 7 foot 2 inches and met its demise not 15 yards from me. What a feeling that was as you only have a 2% chance of surviving a cougar attack. I was scouting for elk a couple of years ago and had 2 close encounters with bears that day. One gave way after some shouting and bluff charges by myself. The other would not move and I had to make way for the large boar to get by me on the trail. I only had a large stick and he was standing about 20 yards from me. The only plan I had was to ram my walking stick down his mouth if he tried to charge me. Usually when we make an evening kill on elk, the mountain comes alive with sounds as we walk out with the meat. I have heard some of the god awefullest screaming coming off the mountain as the scavengers fight over the scraps as we are walking out. I love every minute of it. The mountains have a way of humbling even the toughest of men. |
RE: Wildest thing that happend to you in the woods.
I had a quite a few but the one that comes to mind is back in the
mid seventies when I was brook fishing. Back then the moose was a hard animal to see here and myself being a teenager and learning what was and what wasn't. I was walking through a bog when a baby moose stood up. And not having seen one before thought I was looking at a baby horse some one lost. So I tried calling it and on my other side another baby moose stood up. I was completely amazed at what was going on until I heard a big crashing sound coming through the bog. I looked and here coming through the bog was big momma! I only had a fishing pole so I looked for the thickest part of the woods I could find and went running. I guess she just wanted me away form her little ones as she never mowed me down. And I was too scared to look back to know for sure what happened next. But, I did learn a valuable lesson to beware of my surroundings at all times. |

I know about feeling some what nervous about being in the dark. I was a Army Ranger for 5 years so I have trained in some very intense areas of the world. There is still one spot on my brother-in-laws land to this day that just gives me the creeps. I think it is a childhood thing , I went there after the army to face my fear and ifit was still there. There is an old house foundation in the edge of the woods and it just send chills up my spine when I go by it. Just seems to have a connection with me.

More years ago than I'll admit, my friends uncle, who was handicapped, was hunting from his car. He had really bad legs and used to drive his VW Rabbit onto this field hilltop. Well we hear him shoot, then shoot again, then shoot again and again and again. Like 5 shots, which was unusual, because he's a good shot. Well, we ran over to see what was wrong and find him sitting in his car, shaking his head. He tells us about this buck standing in this little patch of woods, he shoots it and it falls in it's track. But then it jumps back up. Shoots - falls. Shoots falls, etc. we go down to this little patch of woods and weeds and find3 small bucks laying there. Apparently with all the pressure in the woods they found this little patch of woods inviting.

yea i think i get extremely scared when i scare myself.i mean that walking in the woods im alright if i just think about hunting or anything else except for danger lol- but as soon as i think of a killer, bear or something stalking me i let my mind run(especially in the morning when im still half asleep) and i scare myself. i have actually ran to the trailer after a hunt, and not because i was really scared of the woods, just b/c i allowed my mind to overreact and scare myself - thinking something was in the woods. your mind is a very creative and strong thing, lol and letting it gointo exageration mode at 4 in the morning isnt the best idea lol.its a very weird feeling lol.

RE: Wildest thing that happend to you in the woods.
Couple years ago I went for an early morning coyote hunt by myself. I was hunting between two fields where a farmer usually keeps a row of bails. Well, I was layin on my side and the end of the bails with the call buried in the grass a few feet away. I was only paying attention to one direction because there was a den about 500 yds away in the tree line. I'd been there for about 10 minutes when all of a sudden something hits soy bean stubble right behind me! First thing to come to mind was a 'yote had snuck up on me and was ready to pounce. I rolled to my other side and mounted the gun in one motion only to see a red-tailed hawk coming off the pounce no more than 5 feet from my head....thankfully its senses were a little off that day. Needless to say my heart was pounding!
About 2 years ago while bow hunting, I had just packed my climber and thrown it on my back ready to leave after an afternoon hunt. Just before I took my first step I heard something coming towards me. First thought was a deer. So I let it get closer and closer but then it starts to circle me. So now I'm thinking it could be a yote b/c I'd heard a pack howl just before dark, even though they sounded far off. I start shouting a few things and search with my light to try to find eyes but the thing stills keeps circling me. So I start walking and it starts to follow me! By now I'm starting to get a little freaked and I'm still shouting things at it while I'm trying to get out of the woods quickly. After about 50 yards I stop again to see if I can see eyes. I finally catch some with the light.....and it was so close that I could not only see the eyes but make out a white face! Turns out it was a curious possum! haha To see that it was a only a possum was the most relieving feeling on earth! haha |

Usually one of these up every year so ill start it off this year. What is the most craziest thing that has happend to you or you have seen in the woods. In my opinion you were tresspassing when you crossed the property line. In the case of finding a shot deer that crosses the property line you should have contacted the landowner or called a game warden. It takes an idiot to pull a gun on another person for something as trivial as a dead deer. Just because the deer has been shot by you on another property doesn't give you any rights to cross the property line. Pull that crap on my property and I'll have you arrested. If you contact me and explain the situation I'll gladly let you get your deer, probably help you get it out of the woods, but pulling a gun is stupid. Exactly. I would never point a weapon at anyone unless I was prepared to shoot. What would you have done if he had raised his rifle and started to point it at you? Wow, just....wow. You and your dad both should never be allowed to own or operate a firearm, ever. That's just amazing. |
RE: Wildest thing that happend to you in the woods.
Windwalker7, I know a guy who hunts in Centre county PA. He told me he seen a Mt Loin with his own eyes during turkey season. It was within 20 yrds during daylight hrs so there was no mistaking it for something else. It wouldn't shock me one bit if that's what you ran into. I don't understand how people are so skeptical of Mt Lions in PA. I've hunted my whole life and have never seen a bobcat or a bobcat track but I know they are there.
