Double 00 Buckshot for Deer?
Just curious on anyone's experience with 00 buckshot while deer hunting. I was looking at picking up a Benelli shotgun, but was told you can't shoot slugs with them, only the buckshot. What kinda of range can you kill deer quickly with the buckshot? I've never shot a deer with a shotgun, but I've been wanting to pick up a shotgun. And my son needs a gun for deer season. I've only shot deer with my trusty Ruger 77 in 308 win. (Not counting my bow). As long as buckshot would take care of business out to 50 yards or so that would be great. Heck I've never had to shoot over 60 yards with my rifle in the Northern Michigan woods. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks Paul.

I am curious as to why you can't shoot slugs with that gun, I have shot slugs through a smoothbore a lot with no problems. Now onto your question of range with 00 buckshot, I have always tryed to keep it at 40 yards or less, I know some folks that will go out to 45 yards, 50 is really stretching it though.

I can't beleive you can't shoot a slug thru it either!!!! In Minnesota buckshot is illegal. If you ever saw what a 2 3/4" 1oz. slug does to a deer, you wouldn't think twice about buckshot. There very accuate inside 75 yards, not bad to 100 yards. Check with someone else about shooting a slug in that gun. If it has choke tubes, you use the most open one you have.

Pauly,
Does it say in you hand/instruction book that the barrel is BACK BORED? If it does double check with the Mfg to make sure you can or can not use slugs. Don't go by what your buddy or I say. Misplaced Buckeye |

I would try to contact a Benelli representative. I can't believe you can't shoot a slug out of any modern shotgun. I've killed a pile of deer with a shotgun shooting OO, but if you are watching trails or plots I would take the slugs anyday. A small scope will be a help. I agree on the maximum range I would shoot a deer with OO at about 45 yards.

RE: Double 00 Buckshot for Deer?
I have dropped a deer in its tracks at 120 yards with 00 buckshot before, but I will say it was pure luck, only found 1 pellet in the ear. As far as comfortable range, I've killed many deer with 00, 000, & #1 buckshot at up to 75 yards.
Just my 2 cents. |

Pauly
Here in va where I hunt some of the places are buckshot only. I have great success with 00 buck 2 3/4 and 3 inch mag. My first deer I ever killed was with buckshot, one pellet in the neck. I limit my shots to 40 yards but opt for the shorter ranges. Ive dropped them in thier tracks. I prefer slugs over buckshot though but since your wondering...................geo |

With this Buck shot I would keep it in with in 50yds but no more than 75. KEEP HUNTING THE GREAT OUTDOORS & GOD ALIVE, PASS IT ON! |
RE: Double 00 Buckshot for Deer?
It's deadly out to about 50 yds or so. As for the 40, 45, 50 yd thing, I'd sure like to meet the guy that can judge the difference between them without a rangefinder.

I shoot 3 1/2 inch Federal OO out of my Remington Super Mag. I feel very comfortable shooting out to 50 yards and last year I killed a 140 class deer at 75 yards standing still. It only went about 20 yards after i shot it. I did put in a Pattern Master choke tube and that makes a difference. Good luck
