Double 00 Buckshot for Deer?

Just curious on anyone's experience with 00 buckshot while deer hunting. I was looking at picking up a Benelli shotgun, but was told you can't shoot slugs with them, only the buckshot. What kinda of range can you kill deer quickly with the buckshot? I've never shot a deer with a shotgun, but I've been wanting to pick up a shotgun. And my son needs a gun for deer season. I've only shot deer with my trusty Ruger 77 in 308 win. (Not counting my bow). As long as buckshot would take care of business out to 50 yards or so that would be great. Heck I've never had to shoot over 60 yards with my rifle in the Northern Michigan woods. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks Paul.

I am curious as to why you can't shoot slugs with that gun, I have shot slugs through a smoothbore a lot with no problems. Now onto your question of range with 00 buckshot, I have always tryed to keep it at 40 yards or less, I know some folks that will go out to 45 yards, 50 is really stretching it though.

I can't beleive you can't shoot a slug thru it either!!!! In Minnesota buckshot is illegal. If you ever saw what a 2 3/4" 1oz. slug does to a deer, you wouldn't think twice about buckshot. There very accuate inside 75 yards, not bad to 100 yards. Check with someone else about shooting a slug in that gun. If it has choke tubes, you use the most open one you have.

PRACTICE....PRACTICE....PRACTICE......SUCCESS!

Pauly,

Does it say in you hand/instruction book that the barrel is BACK BORED? If it does double check with the Mfg to make sure you can or can not use slugs. Don't go by what your buddy or I say.

I would try to contact a Benelli representative. I can't believe you can't shoot a slug out of any modern shotgun. I've killed a pile of deer with a shotgun shooting OO, but if you are watching trails or plots I would take the slugs anyday. A small scope will be a help. I agree on the maximum range I would shoot a deer with OO at about 45 yards.

I have dropped a deer in its tracks at 120 yards with 00 buckshot before, but I will say it was pure luck, only found 1 pellet in the ear. As far as comfortable range, I've killed many deer with 00, 000, & #1 buckshot at up to 75 yards.
Just my 2 cents.

Here in va where I hunt some of the places are buckshot only. I have great success with 00 buck 2 3/4 and 3 inch mag. My first deer I ever killed was with buckshot, one pellet in the neck. I limit my shots to 40 yards but opt for the shorter ranges. Ive dropped them in thier tracks. I prefer slugs over buckshot though but since your wondering...................geo

It's deadly out to about 50 yds or so. As for the 40, 45, 50 yd thing, I'd sure like to meet the guy that can judge the difference between them without a rangefinder.

I shoot 3 1/2 inch Federal OO out of my Remington Super Mag. I feel very comfortable shooting out to 50 yards and last year I killed a 140 class deer at 75 yards standing still. It only went about 20 yards after i shot it. I did put in a Pattern Master choke tube and that makes a difference. Good luck

I would say that you would be good out to 60 yds with 00 buck. I've seen someone kill a doe at 90....but it was wide open. The main thing is to pattern the gun and see where it shoots, and how big of a pattern. My Browning shoots all the pellets from a 3" mag in a 8 inch circle at 45yds with a full choke...I've killed them out to 60 with no problem. One thing to advise you about is, sometimes with buckshot on longer shots, bloodtrails seem scarce. Good luck.

i shoot a browning invector 10 gauge with OO buckshots i have drop deer out to 100yrds but would not recommend that i try to keep my shots from 0 to 60yrds and thats my 10 gauge "black thunder" i would not think a 12 gauge could do that

I shoot 3.5 in remington express buckshot OO out of my super black eagle. I have tried many types of buckshot but none will pattern as good as the remington in my SBE. I shoot federal out of my 11-87. I would suggest getting a gunsmith to make you a choke to shoot OO buck. I limit my shots to about 40 yards. We use dogs here in VA, I feel it is safer and easier to kill with buckshot. If I was stand hunting I think I would take a rifle or a slug gun. Benelli makes a SBE slug gun. Check the website www.benelliusa.com.

We sometimes use 00 in NJ during the thick areas for drives.

Keep it short (40 yds) but it's very effective.

I use 3" REM 00 out of my Mossberg 500 24in smooth slug barrel.

Why not try 000?Fewer pellets but bigger. If I'm omly going to get one pellet in a deer I want it as big as I can get it.40 yards would be my max distance.

Hunting is not a sport,it's a lifestyle.

I like the Winchester 3" SuperX 00 Buck because it has 15 pellets. With my Rem 870 and modified choke, it works very well on deer out to about 70 yds. On an 8" pie plate, I generally get about 3 or 4 pellets to hit target at 50 yds., definately more than adequate for deer.

i know of an oldtimer who shot a doe at 90 yards with 2 3/4 inch 00 buckshot out of a 12 guage with a 36 inch barrel.

I use to hunt buckshot in NJ when that was all you could use and liked OOO Over OO, I think you gain 10 yards and feel real comfortable at 50-70 yards. Check on that full choke stuff. i believe buck shot compresses as it goes through the full choke restriction and the reverse happens as the pellets leave the barrel causing a bigger pettern spread. Striper Phil EMail ne on the spring effect if you want more info. You should pattern bolth ways.
