Must you mind the winds if using scentblock?
Hey ya'll
I was just wondering because you never see the hunters mention the wind on oln or on the outdoor channel, if you spray some kind of scent elliminator on then do you still have pay attention the winds or what? Please help |
RE: Must you mind the winds if using scentblock?
You must always try to play the wind. If you see a product that states ignore the wind dont buy into it in my own little opinion.

I concur , you'll never truly fool a whitetail's nose no matter what you do if the wind is in his favor . At best your reduced scent signature may briefly cause him to think that you're further away and therefore less of a threat , but don't bank your season on it . If you want to test this advice have a buddy with a good bird dog try to track you , they'll find you every time , trust me .

Ignore pretty much 95% of the crap you hear on these shows, they are getting paid to tell you to use "whatever" product.
Save you're money and hunt the wind, because they will nail you regardless of what you spray on, wash you're clothes in, or whatever the clothing manufacturer is claiming they're products do. |

The short answer is yes!

What!?....What!?...no 'forget the wind and just hunt' kind of guys????:D
actually, there is no way to eliminate 100% of human/unnatural scent. there are many products that allegegly reduce scent, but your odds are way better by properly playing the wind. |
RE: Must you mind the winds if using scentblock?
Yep, play the wind.
Watch how it affects where you are and use it to your advantage....... and whizz on the trees by your brothers stand ![]() |

If you notice every now and then those "tv hunters" will change brands (more money) and suddenly the new product is the best one. They have got to sell products to stay on tv.

You must remember that scientist describe the deer's sense of smell as incomprehensible to man. It is their number one defense mechanism.
So, like others have already stated, always keep the wind in mind and never underestimate the deer's ability to smell you. |
RE: Must you mind the winds if using scentblock?
The commercial says "Forget the wind; just hunt". I personally think that is a bunch of crap. Always have the wind in your favor.

Yes you must still pay attention to the wind. You will get a little room for error but dont count on it. I do know that scentblock has a garuntee. It goes somthing like this: If you wear full scentlok clothing properly washed and stored in scent lok bags, ect. and spray down with scentlok you will not spook any game downwind or your money back garanteed. That is what I heard from an article on scentlok that was in one of my magazines. Just what I heard.

I would never jeopardize any of my set ups by hunting them when I knew the wind was wrong I just put way too much time and effort into them. I am a big fan of Scent Lok and use them religiously but I also make sure I'm showered up, have them stored in my scent tote storage bins and ALWAYS use the wind to my advantage. My thought is that the clothes are just an aid and that's it and nothing more. I have had deer come up on the down wind side and they knew something was there but just couldn't figure out what it was. They just turned and walked off without snorting and carrying on while alarming the whole woods. To me that's all I ever wanted or expected from the clothing. To think the garments are a cure all is the furthest thing from reality they are just an "AID". SO... with that in mind the investment to me was well worth it.
Just my .02 cents and my own personal experience. Bob |

My thought is that the clothes are just an aid and that's it and nothing more. I don'tuse ScentLok or other suppressive garments anymore , frequently hunt right after a sweaty day at work , and I still have what's left oftwo nice fat deer in the freezer . Both were shot with the wind in my favor and no special precautions taken other than staying hidden and quiet . I gave carbon and other systems a fair trial and they all came up losers. IMHO they're nothing but confidence builders at best , and probably the greatest scam in the history of hunting.I've since gone backto doing whatI should have been doing in the first place , knowingmy quarry's strengths and weaknesses and defeating them by being a smarter predator . I despised all the rigamarole of the "descenting regimen" and now realize what a total waste of my time it was . All it did was put me under pressure and never gained me a damned thing but needless stress . The true believers can go on shelling out their hard earned cash for those useless gimmicks if they choose , and I hope they feel better about themselves for it , but I'll never buy into the "scent free" malarkey again . There just ain't no such thing when a whitetail is on the other end , have a buddy with a bird dog track you sometime if you still don't believe it. I have, and he found me every single time . |
RE: Must you mind the winds if using scentblock?
Here's some real food for thought:D
Think outside the box! Key word is to "play" with the wind. Da#$ deer always come up behind you anyways.:D |
RE: Must you mind the winds if using scentblock?
Trusting your hunt to scent blockers and scent suits is as bad as never shooting your guns to check the zero! I go as scent free as possible, but I don't trust that!

RE: Must you mind the winds if using scentblock?
Occasionally I will take either pieces of cotton or those wind checker fuzzies and kill time watching the reaction as they travel in the wind and depending on the thermals they will sometimes go up out of site. Ifa deer comes to you from the downwind side without reacting it is probably because of the thermals pushing your scent up. I am not a diehard believer in the scent blockers/killers.

Been there, tried them, they are a waste of money for the effort involved.
