Coyote problem

The property I hunt is starting to get quite a few coyotes on it and the owner wants most them, but not all out of there. I bought a distress call that has three different sounds, but we only see them at night. They have been seen pretty close to the houses in the area and have believed to have killed a few cats. What is the best way to hunt coyotes?

Find their dens and eliminate the mama and pups , there is no more effective way to reduce a population than that . Camp out near the den until mama comes , take her first , then kill the pups . Taking out a few yotes won't accomplish anything , and your friend should understand that his livestock and pets are in danger as long as a single one lives . Smoke 'em all .

Cleetus, if you figure out a surefire way to actually "hunt" them, please keep this thread posted. At one point a couple years ago, I went all gung-ho on coyote hunting. I even bought a Savage .22-250 specifically for it and a fancy electronic call (already had mouth calls). I watched videos and went out to a spot on our deer hunting ground where I KNOW there's 'yotes and tried to call as best I could tell would be realistic.........nothing........several different occassions........nothing. Was then told to do it in the snow since they are having a hard time finding food........nothing. I'm hoping for someone to tell me how it's done without dogs, trucks, etc. You're even supposed to be able to do it during the daylight hours, similar to when you'd want to deer hunt. I must be doing something wrong.

Try tying out a live chicken. Just put a stake in the ground and tie the hen up with about 4' of strong string. I have found that white chickens work best. I do this about an hour before sunset. I have lost chickens to hawks before but I don't mind feeding birds of prey. Check to make sure this is legal where you hunt. This will also bring in bobcats. May seem cruel to the chicken but I think if I kill enough 'yotes I'm saving chickens in the long run.LOL.

I'd let them kill a few more cat's before going after them.

Interesting info......I was thinking about going all gung-ho this year on the yotes....especially during the off-season.....

I'm with kevin hunt down the dens light a long fusee put it down in the den and cover the openings. I'f you like to shoot goundhogs do not tell your farmers this trick ,he'll be buying a lot of fusees (road flares)

since the chances of finding the dens are slim to none, I'd suggest trapping. Even the best of the best coyote callers have a hard time putting a dent in the population. A trap, or snare, works 24/7! Once you think you're getting a handle on the population, pull the traps!

Similar to what txrookie said, I have heard that you take two roosters and tie them out, just out of sight of each other. At sunrise they will crow to each other and get the interest of the coyotes.

Dont' overthink this one. Just get written permission and a spotlight. Problem solved.

Its pretty hot, humid, and buggy to be sitting there waiting for a coyote to show up for a shot that you may not even make. Like someone else said, trap 'em.

One guy with a rifle isn't going to hurt the population of coyotes. Why someone would want to kill some off, but not all is kind off odd.For every one you see there will be many more you never see, the yote is a very elusive animal. To me the only thing they're good for is something to shoot at.

I use mouth and electronic calls. Get sone Randy Anderson videos on how to do it.

I don't believe you can shoot a coyote population out.If you read about their biology they will increase their litter size as their population diminishes.Aggressive trapping is going to be the best solution.

I think you're right on this one for the most part, but shooting the yotes and trapping them at the same time is pretty doggone effective. There are 3 (I think thats the right number) full time guys hired to kill coyotes in Johnson County here in WYO, and I know they shoot a ton of dogs. In over a month of work in the county, I have seen 2 coyotes- and I'm almost always offroad on an ATV, riding 50+ miles a day. Those guys do a pretty good job of thinning out the coyotes. No way they'll ever all die, though. Just not hardly possible.

Hunt at night when it's legal. I've done afair amount over the years, dawn, dusk, night and I've always had a lot of success at night with a spot light. Some say use a red lens but I've never liked them. I use a combination of electronic rabbit squeals and mouth squeals. And yes, hunting when there's a good snow on the ground usually is pretty productive....a lot of times I'll see them cruising or mousing in wide open fields around 12 to 1pm in the afternoon.

I have always had tremendous success with the foxpro fx3 game call with a jackrabbit in distress call. put it out 50- 60 yards ahead of you play it in 2-3min increments and no more the 15-18mins per stand. key is not to make any sudden movements, stay scent free, and have a good back drop so they don't sneak in behind you. hey but everywhere is differnt so you may have to tweak the system a little.[/align]

Yes. I can usually see a coyote 1 out of every 5-6 setups.

Our land owner doesn't want us to put traps out and I have read you can poison them using raw chicken and a few other none toxic additives......but i would hate to endanger any other critters. I was sitting in my stand and 6 of them popped out of a creek, walked in a line for a hundred yards.........I picked the big one in the front which i am assuming is alpha male and popped his ass. of coarse the rest scattered and were gone. we have way to many and shooting them one at a time isnt gonna do it.......

Find some one who has coyote hounds. They run them alot around home. They get a lot of coyotes like that. I think more than you could get with your rifle. You can't kill'm all one way or another. You might try baiting them with a road kill deer or something.
