How many deer can you REMEMBER shooting?

I've harvested 6 deer and can remember each one very clearly,as if they happened in the same season. I'm wondering as time goes on if I'll remember each kill as vividly or whether the older shots fade with time. For you seasoned hunters, who have shot dozens of deer, can you recall each one,and if so, to what degree?

I believe I could recall most of the deer I have taken ,but how would I know if I couldn't recall. Be rather hard to check on yourself.

As the years pass, I find it difficult to remember all of them. I've gotten one at least for the last 20 years, and some seasons up to four. Last year due to shoulder surgery, I tried but couldn't score. But the one most everyone remembers is the first one. In my case, it was my best. 11 points, 200 lbs. field dressed, in 1957. I'm still trying to top it.

well, i'm not really a "seasoned" hunter. i'm 21 and have been hunting for 8 years, bow and firearm. i've hunted in new york, new jersey, penn., and virginia, so i usually take a coule deer a year. i remember most of them, and sometimes you just remember one that you thought you forgot. i also ALWAYS remember the good ones and the first one.

RE: How many deer can you REMEMBER shooting?

I've hunted on one tract of land for over 20 years. I keep a map of the property with all kills, by everyone, each year. A visual marker on the map indicates the hunter, and deer (8pt, 6pt, doe, fawn etc) taken.

I've taken over 40 deer, and to recount each and every one is difficult off hand, but when I look at the map, I can recall the details of not only every one of my deer, but much of the several hundred taken over the 20 years since I've been keeping track.

If you hunt one piece of property every year, this kind of data collection can be very usefull as well.

I live in an area where the deer aren't all that plentiful, and a successful deer (or any big game) hunt is a special experience. I can remember the details of every deer, moose and bear I've shot over the past 42 years, and that number is now approaching 50.

Heck not only do I remember all my harvests, but all my buddies harvests. I am like Cliff Clavin though, remember all details and usually full of useless facts to boot.

I have been hunting for a little over 20 years and I think I can remember all of them. There are definetly some bruisers that stick out, but even the odd spikes and does still make me recall the situation or a buddy that was with me. I have for the last 10 years kept a journal of every day in the woods scouting and hunting. It is really fun to read what happened 7 years ago on opening day on the same land your on today. I highly recommend this. I intend on passing this on to my son when I can't hunt anymore. It might show him exactley who his old man was and what I stood for.

I tend to remember the big bucks or the deer taken with good shots. As for most of the does I couldnt tell you when or where.

I can remember about 36 of the 50 or so deer over the past 15 years of hunting in VA. The big ones and the first are always fond memories. At least once a year I try to count but there is always one or two that get left out.

I wish I could, but I'm almost 50 and can't remember all the deer I've harvested through the years. I do vividly remember the wall hangers I got though. When I lived in Va, we could get two per day and always hunted bow, muzzleloader and regular gun seasons and have taken many deer in each of the seasons. I really do wish I could remember them all though. In fact, I wish I could remember a lot of things.......LOL

I used to be able to, but I'm closing in on 50 deer, and it gets difficult. I do keep a list, and when I look at that, date, weapon, location, sex, ect, I remember all the details. I could never list them all in my head, but I can remember each one after consulting my list, even what else I saw that day, how the shot went down, ect. Always good for a snowy winter afternoon, recallingg the those first handful of deer, when you were young and nothing else really mattered come the fall.

I am one away from 40 and i can pretty much remember them all. I do have a list that helps for some more of the details, but there is a mental snapshot for each deer.

I do something similar to virginia. I make it a point to take a picture of every deer that i kill and put it in a scrap book. That way, i can go back and recall the memories of the hunt.

RE: How many deer can you REMEMBER shooting?

Like farmhunter I have kept records and I have taken 96 deer. I probably can't remember but half of them. There has to be something special about the hunt before you can recall the experience such as size, weather, company, place, weapon, etc. All were significant at the time or I would not have let loose of the string or trigger. I hunt less and let more pass as I get older though. I am getting more content in just watching them now.

RE: How many deer can you REMEMBER shooting?

OOOH boy, well I am almost 49, I killed my first when I was 11 or 12, it was a doe, that I will never forget, I can still see that doe, I even remember that the biggest doe I have ever seen in my life went by me just before the one I shot came out, she was missing half her front leg and still running as fast as any deer I have ever seen. I remember the biggest buck I ever killed in 74 like it was yesterday also. I remember some others I have either missed or could not get a shot on in some cases better than a lot of other kills over the years. I find it funny in a way, but sometimes I will either hunt a place I haven't hunted in years that will remind me of kills I had there before, or I will be in a particular spot that brings back memories of prior kills, but I will be honest and say I could not sit down and recall every kill or even the numbers, some of them will never be forgotten and others are just fleeting memories.

There is my first bow kill which I will never forget, of course it just happened yesterday!!! LOL

RE: How many deer can you REMEMBER shooting?

For the last 30+ years I have kept a log of weight, sex and location. We had a fire on Nov. 7, 2000 and my logs were burned up. I can still recall most of them(maybe) but it's getting harder each year. I hunted for 12 years before I started keeping the logs. I remember my first, most unusual, hardest to find and biggest. With the exception of the first I can't tell you what year but I think that I would be close. Russ, I also had Shoulder surgery last year and did not get to hunt much and didn't take a deer, one of the few years that were barren for me. Still bugs me. Well that's about it. Keep a log and each time you look at it, your hunt will return.

RE: How many deer can you REMEMBER shooting?

I killed my first deer over 30 years ago and I definately can't remember them all. I probably remember all the bucks, but we are blessed with an overabundance of deer and I usually take 2-4 does per year (yes, legally) for meat. Don't remember all of those.

The one's that stick out in my memory are the bigger bucks and the does that I wounded and did not immediately recover. Any deer that did not meet a quick and humane demise weighs heavily on me. I am more cautious before I pull the trigger as the years go by.

RE: How many deer can you REMEMBER shooting?

When I was fourteen I remember drawing down on a spike buck. Then a mystical thing happened, I woke up and realized I had shot a deer. Two other times come to mind experiencing a mystical blackout right before the shot. I try to keep myself detached from the situation to avoid buck fever, empty my mind from all the chatter that happens at once,(what will it cost to mount it? how close can I get the truck? is there room in the freezer? is that twig in the way? am I still breathing? did the wind just change direction?etc.). I think I know why you asked the question and want to thank you for making me remember some beautiful times.

I can remember every deer I've shot because I have pics of every one of them.My son and I look through the photo album at least once a month and I tell him when and where that deer came from.I've been deer hunting since I was 15(I'm 39 now) and have harvested 44 deer and every one of them are special and, I think, deserve to be remembered.Im sure having all the pics helps me keep them straight, not to mention that I lable the pics as to time and place, and I enjoy looking at them and remembering the trips and the guys at camp.
