He didn't spotlight it, and he didn't bait it. Regardless of the tag, it was a fair chase hunt...no different from what the Indians or Settlers of this country did. And he's only 20 yrs old. Give the guy a break. Everyon'e made mistakes, especially when they were young. It's not like he was out raping and murdering and pirating and pilaging.

Licenses are primarily sold for revenue. He did buy a license, and Uncle Sam got his $ in the end. What's the big deal? In the big picture, this is no different than paying your cable bill 12 hours late, and watching TV during those 12 hours.

I hope you guys who want this dude skinned never dare drive 36 mph in a 35 zone.
That is one of the most backward things I've EVER read on these boards.

More heresay from locals in the area is that he never had a license...killed it and than was told to get a license so he did and bought or was issued a doe instead of an any sex tag. He tagged it and than the DNR heard about it and took the deer. Locals are saying he has always been a dumba$$.

Almost sorry I opened up this thread. However, if the lad did it as indicated, he is in trouble. It does not cost much to deer hunt as an Iowa resident. But the courts will wring you out real good if you screw up.

Yea ,a $26 tag in advance could have saved a lot of grief.

what you should have been saying is, what an idiot for buying the wrong tag, or what an idiot for shooting the deer with out the proper tag to begin with. So I wonder if you'd break the law if given the oppurtunity?
Not me! I would of had the proper tag in the first place. But if he did make a mistake by not having the right tag on him and took that deer not thinking of it at the time. The last thing I would do is drive around displaying that sort of thing.

Again if it was me I would let it go because I would have the opportunity the next day. I hunt private land btw. No deer is worth really risking your hunting privileges or self respect IMHO. I am sure he will learn his lesson.

If its ok to do things like the settlers did, I guess its ok to kill all the buffalo I want. Now I just have to find 'em! What do the settlers have to do with todays game laws? I stand by my statement. If the deer was poached the kid needs to do a few days in the county jail, pay a HUGE fine, and lose his hunting privleges. And if he just didn't know any better, then tough crap. Ignorance is no excuse. POACHING IS NOT OK!

Yes, you are absolutely correct TXRookie. You are such a wonderful Puritan.

1) we should fine him a huge amount of $ so that he is in terrible debt for the rest of his life, and will never be able to afford a downpayment on a new home, or save $ for his children's education
2) we should make sure that he has a felony on his record, so that he can never find a job anywhere
3) he should spend time in jail with murderers, child molesters, and dope peddlers
4) his hunting rights should be banned for life, so that he may never enjoy the outdoors again, and that he'll never be able to introduce his son/daughter to the sport one day.

GET REAL...he's young and he made a mistake. I'm sure that with all this negative publicity, the fellow has more than learned his lesson.

I think he should pay absolutely no fine at all. And I don't think he deserves charges or jail time either. He should be required to submit a 5 page essay to the judge outlining his actions, why they were wrong, and the negative effects they may facilitate. And he should be required to help teach a hunter's education/safety course to other youngsters in effort to prevent them from making the same mistake.

WHAT??? Nobody is comparing him to a hardened criminal. But he should be fined heavily, and lose some hunting time. What could he teach youth hunters, how NOT toshoot your mouth off after ILLEAGALLY taking a deer. Remember this....what makes you think this was his first time? Maybe, first time being caught. In a local outdoor magazine, the DNR posts some of their cases. Some guys they bust, they remember busting them for similar violations in the past. Obviously they don't fine them enough to keep their a$$es out of the woods, or off the water.
