Encounters with Snakes
Guys,
Most folks are scared poohless of snakes. Not sure about you individually, but to me a poisonous snake in the woods is just another creature doing what he needs to do to survive. If I get too close and threaten him, then sure he is going to strike at me. If I go about my business, then he is going to go about his. It is that simple. Down here in the deep South, we encounter those salty tooth moccasins constantly. Matter of fact, during the summer, I will often visit the old creek down in the holler just to see how many salty tooth I can find. It is nothing to find as many as 5 or 6 within 20 minutes down there. I have a rattle snake I caught and froze alive because I always wanted a nice mounted diamondback. So that's respect. Just wondered what kind of encounters folks have had with poisonous snakes and if anyone has ever been bitten. I have them strike at me constantly, but have only been bitten 5 or 6 times. Of those snake bites, only 2 required hospital visits and only one of those was for an extended period. Salty tooth too. Down here in the bottomland of north FL, that is just a part of life outdoors. |

RE: Encounters with Snakes
I'll bet he has 15 or 20 pictures of himself in his billfold, and that's all.

RE: Encounters with Snakes

RE: Encounters with Snakes
Like snakes,if snakes are around you know you have a balanced eco system

RE: Encounters with Snakes
I don't think about snakes much,But when I am out fishing with my kids I allways tell them to watch for snakes...I haven't see any poisonous ones yet,,But I always tell them to look for snakes....I have been careless before and stepped on a banded water snake before right on a trail by the lake..It dawned on me what was under my foot when I felt it move..Even though I never stepped on a snake before..I knew what this was...Quick step forward and turned around to confirm what I have just done..I thought for a second to kill it...But after my adralin slowed down and he slithered away. All was at peace...

Hey I didn't know you were from the north. You are a fellow yankee after all~ |
RE: Encounters with Snakes
Guys,
Not sure about some of the angered posts. I was just asking about your encounters with snakes. Is there really a need to lash out at an old Southern boy who works hard for a living and eats all that he kills (respect). Maybe you Yanks do not have snakes up there, I do not know b/c I have NEVER been up there (more respect) and likely never will. I guess hunting up there all you have to contend with is litter and smog? That's fine, guys. I was just saying that down here in the bottomland of North FL we have to deal with snakes on a daily basis. Some folks are scared phhless - I just accept that it is part of the whole experience. |
RE: Encounters with Snakes
Came across a couple of king snakes makin' out last week while turkey hunting. Big ole' long one's all tied together. I watched for a minute then went on my way. I usually don't run into to many snakes. I've come across a cooperhead or two but for the most part I just leave them alone and they do me the same. (I guess you could say we respect each other)

RE: Encounters with Snakes
Encounters with poisonous snakes are somewhat rare during our hunting seasons other than squirrel since it begins during Summer , by the time deer season rolls around it's usually too cool out for them . Other than Copperheads and Eastern Diamondbacks , both of which are few and far between here , we don't really have a lot anyway . May I reccomend a good pair of snake boots ?

RE: Encounters with Snakes
I've handle snakes all my life and even did it for a living. I have been bitten myself by 4 rattlers and one cottonmouth mocassin. The mocassin bite was the worse as I almost lost my left hand and it left my left index finger deformed and nerveless. The bites were from my own carelessness. Snakes do not charge people, no matter what you've heard. When out in the bush and I encounter a poisonous snake I just leave him be. I am in his domain and I think a person just shows their ignorance by killing them because of their own personal fears.
In all the years of reptile handling I have never heard of a "salt tooth mocassin". Is this a new specie? Also, I was kind of curious what kind of first aid was administered for your bites? Have a good day. Bobby |
RE: Encounters with Snakes
I don't like them snakes Topdawg. I don't kill them but don't want oneanywhere near me. I have had encounters with a few over the years but they neve could catch me because they were slipping in the oil slickI left behind me on my way out. Now thats Respect! No matter what spicies they were they turned into a corn snake after following me.

RE: Encounters with Snakes
Guys, this guy is pure BS! If I knew he was really from the South, I'd appolgize to all of you! This whole "respect" crap is getting old!I don't know of any place that respect is "GIVEN," especially on DEMAND!
I really suspect that TDWW is really an anti, stirring shet and trying to make hunters, especially Southerners look bad! Oh, and BTW, I killed a 4 ft. "stump" moccasin Friday afternoon in my garage! He had to be in there at least 24 hours, because that was the last time that the door was open! Had I not seen him first, theres a good chance I'd have been bit! |
RE: Encounters with Snakes
i encounter snakes all the time they dont bother me i just go around them and let them be .
|
RE: Encounters with Snakes
I don't bother them and they leave me alone. All of the ones up here in the north are non venomous.
|
RE: Encounters with Snakes
WOW!!!
Ingrid Newkirk, aka TDWW, sure knows how to fire you boys up!! Don't you know when you're being worked by the enemy? Or, maybe it's really Larry the Cable Guy having some fun. |
RE: Encounters with Snakes
Down here in Louisiana snakes are every where, even during most of the deer season. It's no big deal. I'm happy to come across a timber rattler. They are great to eat. Copperheads are good too but they are usually not big enough to bother with. Fried rattlesnake strips are dang good.

RE: Encounters with Snakes
Yeah last December I had an encounter with a 23 ft King Cobra. I just snatched him up and bit his head off. LOL!

RE: Encounters with Snakes
S.T.A.N. :D LOL

RE: Encounters with Snakes
I don't think what TDWW says is bs. Sometimes he gets carried away with the way he says or asks, but I guess that is just the way he is. Sometimes he is just flapping his jaws but other times, such as this time, there is relevance in what he has to say. Now to not show your lack of manners or to not show your ignorance just don't respond to him unless it is on topic. You need to give respect until the respect for that person is lost and when that happens just don't respond.Just go along with the important aspect of what he is trying to say and ignore the extra if you want to.
Anyway, my last encounter with a snake was just the other day fishing when it tried it's luck with getting into my boat. Here in Mississippi we also see our share of snakes. Just last summer four cotton-mouth's were shot in the same little water hole within minutes. We kill rattlers every summer along the roads and when bush-hogging.Friends of mine have been bitten by smaller snakes when cutting trails and it's made their finger swell pretty bad. I've even had about a 5 ft. cotton mouth snag hold of a bass on one of my stringers one year. |
