Should I get a free tag?
I took a small buck last fall and I found that it had been shot before. Due to the infection in this deer I was unable to use any of the meat. Should the resource officers be able to grant a new tag in these instances?

RE: Should I get a free tag?
Our DOW officials can grant a new tag. I saw it happen to a non res hunter who shot a small doe with a bow. The deer was clearly sick and had some sores on the back and legs. When they peeled the skin back some of the meat was bad and the DOW confiscated it.

RE: Should I get a free tag?
Cardeer is correct, In PA if you show the deer to a game official they will issue you a new tag for the same current year.

RE: Should I get a free tag?
I guess I would vote for you getting another tag if you were able to prove something was wrong with the deer to the DNR and went through the trouble of taking it to them. I'd think they'd be happy you were taking a sick deer, especially if infectious, out of the herd. Easy to say tough luck if it isn't you. What if you were only able to have one tag where you were at and had no idea the deer was sick when you took it? I guess no venison for you for at least another year.

RE: Should I get a free tag?
do u get a new one in ohio, or do they chalk that up to bad luck?

RE: Should I get a free tag?
Actually my mom had shot a moose and it had already been shot about 7 times and when they cut it open the whole inside was full of yellow liquid and it stank something horrible. We reported it to the F&W and they gave us another tag. Your laws maybe different though.

RE: Should I get a free tag?
IMO .....no. Would you be wanting a new tag and turn over the buck if it was a 220 class animal and wanting a new tag?

RE: Should I get a free tag?
I am not real sure what Ohio would do in this case. I was hunting out of state when this happened. I make a habit of taking animals that are sick or wounded out of the herd. I am also a meat hunter so if it was a 150 class buck I would ask for the antlers when I turned it in but they sure cant fill my freezer. If I couldnt have them then its no big loss. Except to my ego. hehe The question that started this post was an in general question, whether you all believe that if an animal is unusable, then a free tag should be given. I personally believe they should due to promoting ethical hunting practices.

RE: Should I get a free tag?
I would say that you should get a new tag free of charge, mainly for removing a sick/injured deer from the population.
|
RE: Should I get a free tag?
i highly doubt theyll give you another tag especially because of the fact that it happened last season. better luck this fall
