Greg-D, I had forgoten about the quail. It does tend to unsettle you when they come up from under your feet.
I think the only other time that I got that feeling that starts at your toes and works it way up your back was when I was coming out of my hunting area heading back to camp.
It was in Oct. and it was a hot night. I could see very well so I was not using a flashlight. I was about 300 yards from my camp when all of a sudden it just got quiet. I walked a little more and then all of a sudden it felt like I walked into a icebox. There was no wind or anything and no water around that might cause it to cool off.
I did not see or hear anything but boy I got that feeling and I picked them up and put them down geting out of there.

I love hunting, but one of the spookiest things in the world for me is walking in almost complete darkness to my stand. There is just something about it... it is so quiet and you can hear every little movement being made out there. All I can think about is that guy from Friday the 13th... then I remember that I have a badass weapon in my hand! Let that a-hole try me!

What bad ass weapon can stop Jason from Friday the 13th? haven't you seen the movies? nothing can kill him!

I used to be scared to death to go into the woods alone at my grandmas property. Ever since i was little my dad used to tell me stories about seeing cougars on their land. As i got older and started hunting on my own there i would set in my truck till it got daylight before going into the woods. Still today i get a little weary going in there when its dark.

I use to be scared of &quot;bigfoot&quot; as childish as it may seem there is no yes or no answer if it is reall. Anyway, I have a 7mm and if that don't stop him I always carry my Ruger 9mm or my 357 Mag. by george if 3 ballistic silver tip 7mm bullets and 7 rounds of 357 mag. bullets don't stop him then he deserves to eat me.

a guy on my lease went to his stand one morning and before he got in his stand he looked behind him and a cougar was standing there. It scared him so bad he no longer will go to his stand before daylight.

Its always fun when you walk to your stand in the morning before daylight and something is following you in the woods.
when you walk it walks when you stop it stops , it adds to the excitement. It makes you think who is hunting who.

RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?

this reminds me of a funny story that happened to one of my hunting buddies. one evening my buddy was walking out of the woods after an evening hunt. he had his treestand hanging on his shoulders w/backpack straps. he had quite a long way back to the truck and it was pretty dark. he said all of a sudden he heard something behind him. every time he would take a step whatever was behind him would take a step because he could hear the leave rustling. well he was getting kinda nervous because the faster he walked the louder it got and he just couldn't seem to get away from it. every time he stopped it stopped. he started yelling &quot;get out of here&quot;, &quot;i have a gun and im not affraid to use it&quot;, nothing would make whatever was following him go away. finally he couldn't take it anymore and started running full steam. he no more than got a couple of steps when he was yanked to a stop and his feet flew straight up in the air and he landed flat on his back....he said he just knew he was toast and bigfoot or whatever was following him was surely gonna tear him to peices. he lay there waiting for the end to come, but nothing. he tried to get up and couldn't move. wondering what the heck was going on and why whatever just slammed him to the ground wasn't finishing him off...still flat on his back, he pulled his flashlight out of its holster on his fanny pack and shinned it behind him. there he saw his bow pull-up rope w/a dog clip on the end of it hung up in an old dead fall and was stretched out so tight that he couldn't get up. evidently his bow rope had unwound from around his treestand while he was walking back to the truck and the dog clip on the end of it was draggin in the leaves some 20 ft behind him.....LMAO. i get a kick out of that story everytime i think about it. and everyone in deer camp had tears in there eyes the first time it was told there. <img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle>

RE: Anyone ever get SCARED walking into woods?

Here is one my buddy sent me to post.

Here’s one that comes to mind regarding being scared/worried. A friend and I went backpacking in the Northern Cascades. We hiked all day until we reached the area just below the treeline of the mountains. We made camp and got comfortable. As the night went on, we decided to partake in a snort (of JD or JB I can’t recall) or two. My friend decided to hit the rack before me, so he crawled into his little pup tent went to sleep. Well, I guess my friend didn’t know his limit because not 20 minutes later, his stomach decided it didn’t want the beans we had for supper in it any longer! He didn’t make it out of the tent in time. It was all he could do to get the flap halfway open before his belly had its say. He mopped it up as best he could with some dirty socks, but there wasn’t anyway that I was going to sleep in the tent now! He decided to leave the tent flap open because “The cool air felt better”. I put my sleeping bag a few yards away next to a large rock went to sleep.

OK, now that the stage is set, here’s where the scary part comes in. Sometime in the middle of the night I’m awoken by something touching my feet! I freeze as rush of adrenaline shoots through my body and the hair on my head stands straight on end! My mind is racing through the possibilities as to what might be touching me (bear, cougar, psycho, sasquach). My reaction informed it that I was aware its presence, so it began to move. The problem was, it wasn’t moving away. It was moving straight up alongside me! Pressing against me the hole way! Believe it or not, here’s where things cool down a little. By its movements, I make a quick guess as to its size and what it might be. It felt like a porcupine or skunk, so I decided to lay there and let things pan out. It slowly moved away for me, and headed toward the tent. Here’s where things get going again. I’m laying there listing to it enjoying my friends recycled supper! Inside the tent! What the “H” was I to do? If I wake my friend how is he going to respond to having a visitor inside the tent? Being face to face inside a pup tent with a porcupine or a skunk is not a good way to be awakened. Once again, I decide to let things pan them selves out. After several tense moments, I can hear the thing begin to move off. I wait for a little bit and than go over and get my friend up. I relay the chain of events that just occurred, but due to his state of being he seems unimpressed. I force him to drink some water to rehydrate, and zip up his tent this time.

It wasn’t until morning that he was fully able to appreciate the situation. We found his socks not far off. We made fun of the situation, and decided that Mother Nature truly is the best housekeeper!
